  • A potato blight in Ireland, starting in 1845, resulted in the death of over one million people and set in motion one of the greatest human migrations in history. During the famine years over one and a half million Irish men, woman and children left their country on famine ships like the Dunbrody now on perminent display in New Ross, Ireland. Visitors tour below deck and actors tell of the people's experience on the 6-8 week voyage to America when as many as 50 percent perished. In our time there is another Irish migration underway, this one caused by the worldwide economic decline.

There was plenty of food in Ireland being shipped to England every damn day of the great hunger. livestock, grain, vegetables, corn - tons of food that the british took away from the starving people of ireland.

just recently visited this ship on a tour of Ireland and it was such an experience i had to try looking for more info on youtube. its strange.... all of it *pales* in comparison to actually being aboard the replica. to feel how cramped and dark the boat was...to look at those little shelves up close and to know...whole families spent months on end in these small spaces...sitting in putrid conditions with nothing to eat aside from a rock hard piece of bread that had to be soaked for hours just to be edible. Surviving the trip was only half the battle...finding work in a strange land with no education and no money must had been near impossible for these poor passengers who did make it to dry land.
The guide was amazing as well as the actors aboard. Well worth visiting imo, if anything it really makes you appreciate what you have...like clean food and water.

I went there 3 days ago and I didn't like the the sound of it.i was scared because the actor described the sort of experience many had in such detail that it was enough to scareme for weeks.

A nice clean ship with well feed actors. Meant well but there is a disconnect in Ireland about the reality of this famine.
