In every genre of music or specific instrument category, there are people who stand out from the crowd so much that they are almost without peer. Jerry Douglas is one of them. Sort of like, "There's Jerry, and then there's everybody else."
Jerry is one of my greatest inspirations as a player for my life... and I've been playing guitar of one kind or another for 35 years... then I got to meet hem. He is as gracious and considerate as he is talented. And, because of his encouragement I'm now working with the Dobro... inspiring. :)
Just seen this man up at Telluride Bluegrass Festival and he is beyond amazing!! If you ever have a chance to see him, GO!! If it's a few states away, even better....road trip!!!
He is hands down the very best to have, or will ever, play the resignator guitar, otherwise known as the dobro. Thank you Jerry, please keep playing. Nothing but love from the Top Of TEXAS
He's an amazing talent. He makes the dobro sound like many more instruments than one, and the music he makes is SO expressive! It's amazing how he moves from one piece to another while making it sound effortless. And I just love "Monkey Let The Hogs Out"!!
For me it was the other way around - I saw that he was featured when I checked the album out and I was like "YAY JERRY DOUGLAS!". Seems to happen more and more often these days with various artists. :3
jerry 'flux" douglas is a musicians musician, he isnt limited to bluegrass, folk, blues, jazz or rock,,he can play it all, Ive been watching him since we were both 18 yrs old at the bluegrass festivals with jd crowe, then the whites,, a very nice friendly man, down to earth,, but magical!
I play bluegrass dobro in open g and so tried a similar lick but it didnt sound right so i tuned to open d and it sounded bit better. Id love to be able to play like jerry!
He is on several of the Alison Krauss and Union Station videos. Hes on Maybe, Let Me Touch You For Awhile, The Lucky One, New Favorite, Restless, Goodbye is All We Have and If I Didn't Know Any better. I think hes in Steel Rails and I've Got That Old Feeling as well.
Dunno if you ever got a complete answer on this, but Dobros (and their metal-bodied cousins the Nationals) and other resonator guitars can be played the way JD is doing it---this is standard for dobro, face-up and addressed vertically, with action way high (who needs frets?) and strings very tense (better for slide), or held like guitar, which is the most common way you see Nationals played, with or without slide. (continued)
(continued) Either guitar can be set up (except for square-neck Dobros) with action low enough to fret if that's your preference; but nobody can effectively fret a high- and tight-strung Dobro. That's strictly for slide work.
Well actually! I just recently got the Mr Jerry Douglas to sign my resonator guitar, along with a few pointers and a picture! I have also played it in front of a crowd a few times in the past few weeks. So overall, quite well!
@billykid84 Oh yeah, they're super high. My buddy tried to play a Dobro like a normal guitar once and had to quit after about five minutes, it was so hard. Some people still play it that way, though. :/
16 years later and I still come back here, what a great talent!

canadianroot: no "Sort of like" about it! There IS Jerry, and then everybody else. Peerless on Dobro...
Amen

Until you try and play this instrument will you appreciate how amazing his playing is. Well done
Even with frets I can't do anything substantial. Let alone with just a bar.
Jerry Douglass - simply the best!!
I saw him live, in a small setting, when all he had out was one cassette tape. I have been in love with his music ever since. He is a Master!

this guy is just incredible, what a talent, what a feel - not sure even someone like Ry Cooder at his peak could pull off something like this ..
Oh, I think they're both great in their own right. Douglas is awesome, and I love Cooder for his sound too.
This Guy! Seriously Such Talent :-) if I could play Dobro even half as good as this I would be so Happy

I like metal, rock, classical, country, all real music......but this is unreal.
Hail to the king, baby.(yes, evil dead)
Wow, what a player. Amazing.

From 0:02:14 to 0:03:24 is "Little Martha", by the legendary Duane Allman, the unequaled Mt. Everest of slide guitar.
He did an album called "changing Chanels". Super cool if you can find it.
Alison Kraus and the Union Station would be incomplete w/o Jerry.. no doubt.
so impressive. and i don't usually enjoy this kind of music!
Very nice!!
great stuff!

@bigroy38 He's also her producer.

Jerry Douglas is GOD.
Well actually! I just recently got the Mr Jerry Douglas to sign my resonator guitar, along with a few pointers and a picture! I have also played it in front of a crowd a few times in the past few weeks. So overall, quite well!
Love his hat tip to Duane with little Martha. Jerry, much like Duane, is head and shoulders above the rest.
I love it

Wicked sick.

I Love 'Little Martha ' by allman Bros. and Dickie Betts....
@BeckyPoC You left one out .. There is a college in N.Y...Named ''VASSAR''
Jerry douglas is the best that has ever lived and slayes dragons in hell with his axe and fears nothing!
Wild West calling over there!!
@rednecksam95 Was it your brilliant deduction that it was an open chord or that it was 'D' that you thought would interest us?
You're right - good tip, thanks!
2019??
seen him live - Jerry is the same, only better
a very funny guy onstage as well
Excelente! Recuerda a Stephen Stills.-
