    Never ceases to amaze me how large northern whitetails get !! Here in east Texas (the piney woods) an outstanding buck before field dressing would probably go 185lbs. Even less in the Hill Country of central Texas. Congrats on a great buck. Needless to say, hunting in Texas in a lot different than on the side of a snowy mountain. Thanks for sharing.

    • @WanderingWhitetails
      @WanderingWhitetails  2 місяці тому +1

      @@easttexan2933 Thanks East Texan! Appreciate the comment and a little insight into how things are in Texas! Most likely, the bucks in your area have much better racks overall than here in the northeast. A 200lb buck (completely clean dressed) is big here but 120” gross score is also a very big buck in Vermont. I love hearing from guys in different regions of the country. We may do things differently but we all still share a common passion for deer hunting! Good stuff. At the end of the day, it’s all about the experience behind the animal and not the stats. Good luck out there this season!

      @@WanderingWhitetails Good luck to you this season as well. A few more insights from Texas if you will indulge me some more. I grew up here in the early 50s, 60s, 70s and up until about 1986 and we hunted deer exclusively with dogs and shotguns. That was the norm for East Texas (the piney woods region of texas). But we could see "the writing on the wall" for dog hunting as more and more timber company land was being leased for hunting clubs. Our way of life was being forced out because of big money for the timber company. Some of these leases would have 10,000 acres and have couple hundred hunters with their families. It was and still is crazy. No walking around is allowed for obvious reasons. It wasn't for me. I was fortunate to have grown up on a farm so we had our own land to hunt on. Around the mid 80s is when baiting deer became really big. Corn feeders and shooting boxes became the norm. I get castrated every time I tell people on here we bait deer. But, not everyone can walk around in the woods like you guys do. I'm curious though, is your hunting area private or open range? Anyway, we are overrun with hawgs in Texas so that is always an option. I don't hunt in ET anymore, my son has a ranch in Mason, Texas and we hunt there over corn and protein feeders. Not unusual to see 20-30 deer at a feeder at one time. I'll be the first to admit there is "no hunt" involved in it but that just the way it is here in Texas. I like your rifle. Have owned a few myself. I currently shoot a ruger M77 in 7x57 and a custommized swedish mauser in 6.5x55 and a Marlin 336 in 30-30. I've killed so many deer since 1956 that this will probably be my last year. Just not near as mad at em as I used to be lol. Good luck.
      Seek the Lord Jesus while he can be found. Time is not on our side.

      @WanderingWhitetails  2 місяці тому +2

      @@easttexan2933 Wow, thanks for all of the info! That’s really interesting to read and hear about how things were and are. Nothing wrong with hunting legally in your respective state/zone! There are plenty of different ways to hunt. Baiting is illegal here and stand hunting just isn’t for me personally! I prefer hunting the mountains with miles and miles to roam freely. Deer populations are vastly different here in Vermont. We only have a fraction of the deer. The areas I hunt only have about 1 deer killed per square mile each year in total! Only 16,845 deer were shot last year between all seasons combined, in the entire state. We have a pretty low success rate and finding them can be very tough. The lower lands and agricultural areas tend to hold more deer of course, but the mountains are sparse. However, they can have an opportunity to really mature. I hunt primarily national forest/public land tracts that are thousands of acres of untouched wooded mountains. It’s the challenge that keeps me coming back! It definitely makes passing a smaller buck difficult because it may be the only buck you see all season, but it can be a huge payoff if you are able to locate a good one. I’m glad you get to hunt on your son’s ranch now, nothing beats spending time together and hunting. Miss my dad lots and wish we could share those memories again! My gun was handed down from my grandfather and has brought me tons of luck since. It continues to perform and fill tags just as it did for him. Remington 742 in .308. Good luck out there, enjoy the moments, regardless of how many tags you do or don’t fill!

    Congrats...I lost my dad when I was 19 in 2004 and I've had the same talk while walking the woods/rivers and I know he's walking every step of the way... It does get better over time and staying in the hunt keeps the emptiness from creeping in... My two boys are my focus and showing them how my dad taught me is so wonderful to pass down onto them... Just think about how many people watch your videos trying to learn the art of tracking/still hunting all of them are learning from what you where taught from your father and I believe that's a legacy that will never be forgotten by so many wanting to just simply learn.... Keep the knowledge moving, and may the mentors never die.

    This has got to be extremely challenging on that crunchy snow like that. In Michigan we wouldn’t get within a half mile of a deer in these conditions! I have much respect for your way hunting. I would love to learn the process some day. I live and breathe deer hunting 365 days a year. We stand hunt in my area. I’m sure you e done that. I think your way would be much more rewarding. Also not as boring, I sit a lot of hours waiting for a few seconds encounter with a deer. Similar to you just a different way. Always learning about them. Thanks for sharing!

    • @WanderingWhitetails
      @WanderingWhitetails  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks Steve! It’s amazing how many encounters you can still have with deer on crunchy snow. A lot of it is how you move and sometimes getting lucky by hearing them or seeing them first. The crunch can work in your favor as well! I was standing and scanning as far as I could see and happened to catch movement as he was cruising the flat way down below me. I stayed put and patiently waited for him to reappear. Sometimes it just works out and you’re in the perfect position to capitalize on the opportunity! I’ve stand hunted as well in the past but I can’t sit for more than an hour or two without freezing and getting anxious. I need to explore and see what’s over the next ridge to feel like I’m in the game. Although, sitting can be one of the most effective strategies if you’re in a great location for buck movement! I hope you can get to the big woods and get out to explore and learn some tracking one day! The best way to learn is through experience, there’s no replacement for that. Thanks for the comment! Best of luck to you out there in MI!

    Great deer! Happy for you. Growin up in Addison County Vermont I hunted like that for years and loved it. I moved down south where the gun season is 4 months long. There is still nothing in this world like dogging one on snow, in the cold, over the mountains and getting the better of one. Nobody here understands that. Those 15 days in November were the best part about living there and this really took me back.

      @@WanderingWhitetails blacktails have a small home range like a whitetail, but not nearly as habitual. The does travel trails, the mature bucks tend to stay off of them, and rarely show themselves except for a few days in the rut. They live in the most unpenatratable hellholes that you can imagine. Reprod so thick you can't hardly get through it, if there is a small open spot in it, it's got blackberries growing there. The caynons are deep and steep. That time of year it's usually raining, and the wind is swirling like crazy. Other than that, they are fun to hunt. You can kill deer in the cuts, but rarely mature deer.

      @@WanderingWhitetails I've spent some time in South East Alaska. That's how I ended up out here. I was commercial fishing up there in the summers when I was in high school. One yr I didn't fly home. That's some thick forests. The Kodiak deer seem to have adjuster to a more open habit. Which is probably good due to the predator situation they live in. As far a success, I've killed quite a few over the years. Only 2 I'd consider mature animals, neither were huge antlered deer. In Washington, we only get one tag, and we have to choose our weapon prior to buying the tag. I really enjoy archery hunting Mule Deer, so I don't hunt black tails every year.

Nuthing Better then hinting Big woods in Pa . Some started calling buck here “ pa mtn buck “ which doesnt do our buck in pa justice . So if i may and you as well to eventually prefer to call them “ Pa or Pennsylvania big woods buck “ and also put a big in the ears of many to pass on 3 on one side buck and let our youth harvest them . I believe that an 18 yr old should not be allowed to harvest anything below a viewable 8 point buck at least it the ears wide . Y bucks spikes 3 on one side plus larger to be harvested by disabled veterans , disabled , physically challenged youth to senior can harvest any buck of choice and for all to be able to have their pa hunting license be either buck or doe ( no yearlings ) and purchase the allowed amount of doe permits but the permits should be a specific amount per individual county . Whether 1 or 5 other then the regular license . I think it’s time to step up the rules since the Gary Alt phase . It’s been 20 yrs + since then . Safe hunting sir . Pa proud

      Thanks Ken, appreciate that! Seasons can be really grueling with many many miles in the mountains, but we wouldn’t have it any other way! Makes the reward that much sweeter when it finally all comes together.

    Awesome man. Fellow Adirondack/VT Greens Hunter here. I live right on the border. Love watching content from guys who know what it's like to hike 2.5 hours straight up to even get to your spot! :)

      Thanks Joel! Absolutely! A lot of hunters will never get to experience that like we can, so in a way we are very fortunate to have to work so hard for our deer! If you're like me... I know I wouldn't have it any other way (although it would be nice to see more deer in a season haha)!

    My mans got the Benoit rifle and coat going to track those northern bucks. Way to keep his memory alive. Its like dressing like fred bear to hunt with a recurve😂

      Haha thanks! Late Grandpa’s rifle, Late Father’s coat, and well over a century of family heritage hunting these mountains. Honoring the all of the generations before me and keeping our great traditions alive! 👍🏻
