      The park had decent ride operations back then. I haven't been to the park since El Toro opened. The operations were beyond bad when I was there last. It's one of the reasons I haven't gone back to be honest. I hope things are better now.

    Never got to ride Medusa but it holds a VERY special place in my heart! i remember going to the park on like it's opening day as a little kid with my Mom, Uncle, & my two best friends who were brothers & their Mom's & a their cousin of around the same age & we/i had basically the best time of our lives that day we got to the park early around opening time! & didn't leave till closing time! & my friend(the older brother of the two) & his cousin spent almost the whole entire day there waiting in a huge ass line to ride Medusa! & i remember my friend's cousin bribe daring me to go on Medusa with the two of them because i was/am terrified of Rollercoaster's period! & my friend's cousin was like! if you ride Medusa with us i'll give you my Sega Dreamcast & entire game collection of about 10 games & 3 controllers & 2 memory card's that goes with it! all you have to do is get on Medusa & ride the entire ride just once! & i was like: "HELL TO THE NAH!!" & they sorta teased me the whole car ride there! for being a big scaredy-cat! because i wouldn't ride Medusa! hahaha! But still Medusa holds a super special sentimental place in my heart! especially being that my Mom & Uncle are no-longer here/living! & because i haven't seen those childhood friends in YEARS! probably since like early 2003-ish at the very latest! & we hung-out every single day! slept over eachother's house's & even lived right down the street from eachother! & went to the same exact school almost around the corner from where we lived at aswell! & then at one point then they moved pretty far away one day! & i never got to see them again!....But anyways! good times! for sure! the best!...& i'd give like absolutely anything! to go back to the year 1999 again! or earlier!...& Thanks!! for uploading this video giving me a nice little stroll down memory lane!.... 😊✌

      I never understood that either. They had some "theming" with a sign that read Medusa Mining Company. I remember getting into a discussion with one of the die-hard locals in 1999 while standing in line. They were really happy that the park had themed it so well. When I asked what theming was done so well, they pointed to that sign and some wood that was suppose to look like a mine entrance or something. Apparently I didn't have the desired reaction to the theming and they believed that because I visit a lot of parks, I am "numb to theming." We weren't mad at each other but I have always laughed at that comment.

I purposely wanted to be surprised with the prototype trains so I kept my back to the station during the entire wait in line. No joke. I was one of the original crew members of Medusa when it opened in '99. Crews for new rides are pulled from the coaster crews from the previous season and are usually the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable about coasters, and it shows. They also overstaffed the coaster for the first few months of the season to handle the long waits, and we had throughput numbers that exceeded what the park set as the hourly capacity of the coaster by large margins. If I recall correctly the hourly capacity for Medusa was initially 1440 people per hour, and later reduced to 1280. We frequently were getting 1600-1800 guest on an hourly basis the first month or two the ride was open.
      All that ends pretty quickly, though... all of the original managers were either promoted to supervisor or moved on to other rides pretty quickly---being a manager on a new coaster puts you on the fast track to promotion.
      Thanks for the footage... it definitely took me back. I left Medusa in June of that year, and I'm assuming this footage was from the latter part of the year because I didn't recognize any of the staff working the ride as any of the original crew.

    • @RADZADproductions
      @RADZADproductions 3 роки тому

      @@josephshannon just came back to this video. I’m now one of the supervisors for the bizarro crew this year, and the fact that 1800 was even possible is insane. Because of covid we haven’t been able to hit over 1000, but when we have the right crew, we are able to push out trains like crazy even with only 2 attendants on a train. Hopefully I’ll be able to work this ride again after the pandemic, and bring it back to it’s glory days

    • @josephshannon
      @josephshannon 3 роки тому

      @@RADZADproductions Ah that's awesome. 20 years later and I still miss working on that ride. With the station being in the center of the track it was the best coaster to operate because you could hear the train all throughout the course... I felt very in tune with what was happening moreso than any other coast I worked. I ended up being the day shift lead when the season started because the original one was promoted to supervisor, and some mornings I would buy a breakfast sandwich from Wawa and eat it at the platform at the top of the lift and watch the sun rise and the animals waking up in the safari. At the time some of us would get to the park at 8am and we'd wax and lysol the train and harnesses every morning to keep everything looking pristine... that lasted about a month or so until people started picking at the harnesses and graffitiing them. I recall the last time I went on the ride, about 10 years ago, that there was some sort of plastic guard by the buckle to prevent people from picking at them.
      Hitting 1800 required us having 5 attendants working. 2 on each side in the front and rear of the train and one at the turnstile taking care of measuring kids and prepping people as they came into the station to get all their hats/etc. secured before they got to the front. We worked to have each train ready to go before the previous one cleared the top of the lift, which was an insane pace. If I recall correctly it's ~45 seconds from dispatch to clearing the lift. When they decided on an hourly capacity we were advocating for 1440 before they settled on 1280, probably because they knew there was no way the ride would have that kind of staffing level in the future.
      We also had the benefit of a few things you don't. We always had three trains in operation, the front attendant on the far side didn't have an enable button to push (they introduced that about 2 months after the ride opened), and, most importantly, most people didn't carry personal electronic devices on them in the 90s. We didn't have to deal with all the overhead that comes along with trying to deal with that... usually the biggest thing for us was a few backpacks and hats that we would let people know ahead of time that they'd need to leave against the wall in the station. We didn't have cubbies or anything... they just threw them across the station and that was pretty much that. If I recall correctly, I believe they also took out the middle two seats in the last row of each train to handle the electronics for Bizarro, which meant that we had a cycle capacity a bit higher than yours as well, which adds up if you're sending 60 trains an hour like we were.

    Sean- Do you remember if it was three train ops that day? If so, WOW!

    • @SeanFlaharty
      @SeanFlaharty  5 років тому

      Yes, I believe they were running three trains that day. However, it's weird that I can't place all three trains in this video. There is one on the course heading into the cobra roll as the train I was on left the station. The other must have been behind us. What is also puzzling is when we are back in the station and the train in front of us dispatches, I can't hear another train on the course. Perhaps there are only two running when I recorded this video but I do remember all three running after ERT for sure with little stacking.
