    An R1S, R1T AND a beautiful Airstream. This family is leaving the dream.
    I cant wait to get my R1S next week. This video gave me a lo too confidence in the Rivian R1S towing capabilities. Hoping to rent a camping trailer for a trip soon.

    What is the weight of the Airstream? Do you also happen to know the tongue weight? Do you use a weight distribution hitch with sway control? Great videos. Thank you.

      Thank you! It’s 6,700 lbs dry. We’ve weighed it and ours sits at 7,500lbs. Our tongue weight also followed the 10% rule. Usually we do use a Blue Ox weight distribution!

    We sold our Model X after getting a larger trailer where the range dropped from 140 miles to 80-10 towing. Wish we had purchased an airstream. So now I tow our brick trailer (Rpod195) with a Tundra. Excited to see these videos!

    Hello! This is an awesome setup. I've watched a lot of your towing videos and part of the reason I went with an R1S was because of watching these videos, so thanks! I've been towing a 22' camper... under 5,000 pounds and it's super easy. We are thinking about upgrading campers to a much larger unit. The unit we are thinking about is 6,883 dry and a hitch weight of 645. We are assuming we will be in the 7,500 pound zone when loaded, so very similar to your Airstream. It's a 34' camper though, so I'm worried about length and just jumping up in towing a 22' to a 34'. Seems like this tows really easy for you, but was there a big learning curve when you started? I've also heard that there should be more of a buffer on what you are towing vs your towing specs, where this would put us pretty close to capacity. Any other tips for making a move to a long trailer? Thanks!

    I was an R1T presale holder for a long time but ending up getting a Tundra instead. The lack of pull through charging locations is what killed it for me. I did not want to deal with disconnecting the camper at every charging station. I still want one, love that truck.

    • @AllElectricFamily
      @AllElectricFamily  Рік тому +1

      With the R1T you don’t have to unhook that often to charge since the port is on the front of the car. On our trip to Colorado last year we unhooked at 2 of the 6 different chargers we visited over the course of that whole trip. And it takes us about 3 minute to unhook and about 3 to get it all back together again after having a few practice rounds. It’s something we expected to have to do more but have been surprised at how often we can stay hooked up.

    • @AllElectricFamily
      @AllElectricFamily  Рік тому

      We didn't explain, did we! We were using a home charger that wasn't the Rivian charger or our Autel home charger and the car didn't seem to like it. It would stop charging almost every time we used it. But we aren't seeing that issue with the Rivian or Autel chargers we usually use.

  • @Dbgolfnski

    Curious, how did you charge at the campground? There’s 30/50 amp service but what/how did you plug in the car. BTW, I know nothing about EV but I’m trying to learn.

    Love the videos - we currently have an r1t, Lightning and a Tundra. We are thinking about trading the R1T for the R1S and your videos have helped with the decision process. We have a trailer and ussually pull it with the R1T - you're correct in that you cant feel it at all!!!! I'm a little concerned about the R1S being a lot more "bumpy" when daily driving due to the short wheel base - what are your thoughts?

    Great video. Looks like you're having lots of fun with your Rivians. Why didn't you charge to 100% for both legs of your trip? Wouldn't that have alleviated some range anxiety? The vehicles were designed to occasionally charge to 100%, especially to support longer distances and towing.

    • @AllElectricFamily
      @AllElectricFamily  Рік тому

      Thanks, glad you're enjoying the videos! We tried to charge to 100%, but the vehicle was having an issue with the charger we were using and stopped charging overnight. So, we didn't quite get to the 100% we wanted!

    Thanks for the video. Noob question here. Why don’t you use sway control bars etc? I used to tow with Model X and they gave me/ installed the system and weve used that ever since.

    • @AllElectricFamily
      @AllElectricFamily  Рік тому +1

      Actually, a Model X is a unibody frame so you should not use a weight distribution system! We got this information direct from Tesla. However, we did use a sway control bar with our Tesla Model X and would suggest it to everyone!
      We usually use a weight distribution with our Rivians, but we were trying a new hitch and wanted to see how it did without one.

      @@AllElectricFamily thanks for the reply and information. What are your thoughts and experience on towing without them? Mainly asking because that’s one of the reasons I tend to stay under a radius for my campings to avoid having to hitch and unhitch the bars. Is the R1S unibody?

      @@AllElectricFamily Your misinformed. WD hitch has sway control but it is a side effect. WD is required to lessen the load on the TV rear axles. If you ever towed a trailer before... Your TV is overloaded with that trailer tongue weight around 800lbs.

  • @jp1087

    That's a ridiculously dangerous tow setup if I ever saw one. No weight distribution hitch or anti-sway? Dry weight of the trailer is already 90% of the total towing capacity of the R1S, assuming you have the one with the highest rating of 7,700lbs. Your R1S weighs 6,950lbs, and the GVWR is only 7,650lbs, so without a w/d hitch, you're already over the GVWR just by adding the dry tongue weight of the trailer before you even sit in the car. Given your comments about towing issues with other ICE trucks, it's clear that you really don't consider anything except what the "max tow ratings" say, and don't take anything else into consideration, like GVWR, tongue weight, weight distribution, payload capacity, etc. I hope people don't go out and copy this.

    • @AllElectricFamily
      @AllElectricFamily  Рік тому

      We did consider it, and then once we switch to electric it was easier.

    I think it's very important to call out to your viewers that the R1S is not designed to tow that particular airstream (and therefore it is not safe and should not be encouraged). The dry weight tongue weight of that trailer far exceeds the maximum tongue weight spec'ed by Rivian for the R1S (I know, that is why I only tow AS with a R1T). It's important that you let your viewers know that if they were to do what you did in this video, and an accident happened, they would be liable as regardless of who is at fault. Please be mindful and considerate of your viewers, your excellent videos influence many people's decision; you want to make sure to call out what is illegal or out of engineering spec. Since the R1S max tongue weight is 770lbs, and this trailer has a tongue weight close to 1000lbs; does towing that void your R1S warranty? How to you make sure that your family and other motorists sharing the road are safe? I'm curious to see if not having tow mirrors causes any kind of hazard or safety concern?

    • @AllElectricFamily
      @AllElectricFamily  Рік тому

      We have been to the scale with our R1T and are confident in its ability to tow our trailer with our set up. We have towed RVs well within the capabilities of our ICE vehicles in the past that were horrible to drive. Hard to control, hard to stop, and just too much for a truck that was supposed to be able to tow it. The R1S and this trailer are super stable, stop very well, and are very solid going down the road.
