  • We start at Sandy hallow Rd on Thursday chasing Illinois Railway Job 03, that would Just Serve Behr Iron & Metal. While, at seminary St, an interesting move from CPKC would appear coming north on IR's rails at around 10 AM. We then, chase Illinois Railway back down towards the storage track. After that, we decided to try to catch up to CPKC, CN L561 cut us off at Mogan St and I have never seen this CN Job before. We decided to catch up to them near Broadway on CN's East Belt. As the train was serving international Paper, we saw a Westbound rolling through the trees. We decide to go to Broadway in which we just barely make it to see the two NS units pulling the train west. Next, we catch L561 leaving international paper on the way to retrieve a covered hopper from J.L. Clark Plastics. After a pretty action-packed morning comes to an end. Finally, we see L561 crossing S Main St. Thanks for watching!

Great video. I used to be that guy in the scrap yard on the left when the CPKC local went under you. It was great work, no one bothered me. When either scrap 316 or 304 or both mixed together was dropped off by our rolloff trucks, I knew I had some good work ahead of me.

Very impressive. Even though I've lived in Milwaukee all my life I've never really spent any time at all with the rail activity in Rockford. To get that much action is fantastic. Thanks for putting it on the big screen

I love Rockford, so much history, interesting city. Thought all railroading was dead there since the C&NW was bought out.

      Not really.
I’ll do a bit if cover for you.
      I was BORN in 64.
The first shot was on Kishwaukee street, right by the old Rockford Products building.
Next was Sandy Hollow down the road from Kmart.
They third was a bit south of the Rockford Airport tower, by the old Parkside Warehouse….
I used to use the tracks as a walking path when I was young, because it was safer than the streets.
      A lot has changed.
Rockford Standard Furniture and all of the sidings are gone.
The track that paralleled Keith Creek in the park is also long gone.
The wye that crossed Harrison Ave can barely be seen.
      Nylint is no longer around.
Gunite (fourth time I put that in, the GD MF C sucking spellwreck needs to be destroyed, IMHO)
Gunite is still making brake drums, as far as I know….
      Quaker is gone.
I don’t know if you remember the main that went through Loves Park and on into Harvard. They took that out to create Rock Cut State Park…
I probably saw one of the last Great Western trains when I was about 8, all the trackage between Rockton and Freeport is gone…
Same demise of the track between Rockton, and South Beloit to Harvard.
All of the old railroad companies are gone, the Milwaukee Road, Burlington Northern, Illinois Central Gulf, and Chicago Northwestern.
The old ICG mainline still goes through.
The CNW mainline was torn out back in the 70s and 80s.
The south Rockford area that used to be a spaghetti bowl of track is now all but vanished.
The only tracks that cross 11th street these days id the old ICG and CNW line, still
      In the same place.
Rockford’s city control freaks found that if they put enough blacktop over active tracks, they could shut the railroads off from customers….
That’s how they stopped the railroad from getting in to the Drop Forge on 18th street, by the old National Lock building….
A lot has changed, my friend.
The streets are there, but the places are much different.
Seems they got rid of the diamond that the ICG and the BN/Milwaukee Road used to cross.

Born in Rockford in 1976 and left for the Army in 1995 and have only returned a few times. Lots have changed but still weird to me to see the crossing at Main st and the old IC depot gone. I can remember as kid riding the Amtrak Blackhawk to Chicago a lot. Great Video!!!
