The big problems we had with polyester double knit fabrics.
1. It is hot in the Summer,
2. It is cold in the Winter.
3. It picks up stains (that can't be removed).
4. It picks up odors (that can't be removed).
5. It pills and pulls easily (and looks old quickly).
6. It will wear out your sewing machine quickly.
The good things about Polyester double knit fabrics.
1. It came in a very wide width.
2. You don't have to finish the seams.
3. You could make a complete outfit in less than a day.
4. Ironing was not usually required.
5. It dries quickly.
6. It was usually wrinkle free for travel.
Oh wow! I didn't know half of these. Thank you for sharing.
Side note: why am I actually contemplating making something out of one of them now?
@@StephanieCanada Another problem with (and my reason for hating) polyester:
It's literally plastic, no matter how nice it looks or feels to the touch. It blocks airflow and vaporization. Your body is sweating all the time and giving off odor all the time. And it's trapped under polyester clothing. So you will sweat in it no matter what (Just wrap yourself in some plastic wrap and see what happens, it's pretty much the same). That's why it feels hot in summer, cause your body heat and sweat can't evaporate.
Now some people might think 'so why is it cold in winter then?' For one, most people wear cotton underwear and socks. Cotton is VERY lipophile, that means it sucks up every liquid as fast as possible and does its best to not give it back. Wet cotton multiplies the effect that body sweat has from the start: it cools you down. So, wearing cotton underwear under polyester will make you freeze.
Additionally, you have bacteria live in your sweat, and all kinds of germs like the wet environment on your skin. If your sweat can't evaporate, they will happily live there. That leads to skin irritation, especially with sensitive or allergic skin.

I always have to pretreat the underarms of my polyester (+ other synthetic clothes) with liquid detergent to get the odor out. I still like synthetics. Maybe it’s because I grew up in the 1960s & 1970s?😊
The “backed” fabric was known as “bonded” back in the day. A layer of nylon or polyester was permanently fused to the back of the fashion fabric. The idea was that the bonding would be a substitute for lining. It fell out of favor because the bonded layer often shrunk at a different rate than the fashion fabric, resulting in a slightly wrinkled effect that couldn’t be ironed out.
Oh now THAT I didn't know that is shrinks at different rates.
thanks for sharing. i bought some vintage waverly home dec fabric that was supposedly bonded, but that layer must have been peeled off. there is no evidence of it now, thank goodness!

Cloth of Gold fabrics was established in 1913 in Tryon, NC by the Jackson family. I have a link to a story but can't post it here :)

Tryon is just down the road from me a bit -- and Land of the Sky is a common name around here. I knew upstate SC was known for textiles, but I didn't realize it bled into NC, too (I'm not too far from the SC border).

The yellow purple would be nice to see as a 1960's Jackie Kennedy type jacket with matching hung pencil skirt.
Back in the 70s, my grandmother made entire patchwork quilts out of double knit polyester. I let my cousins have them when she passed away. They were very hot to sleep under.
Apparently, homeless people like polyester quilts, because they don’t absorb water and don’t stain like cotton. Plus they are warmer than cotton. Personally, I can’t sleep under one.
I remember a VERY stylish co-worker that made herself
beautiful dresses from qiana knit. The big thing was whatever you made from it you had to hang for a few days for it to stretch out before you hemmed it. It was also VERY expensive (this is my teenage years. . . 1975ish).
I bought a little lovely creme color and made myself a beautiful shirt. I wore it once. While doing laundry in our old feed it through the wringer machine, the damn washer wringer grabbed a button and shredded the entire front and one sleeve. I paid a lot for that fabric and never bought it again. So happy when the washer died!
Tge purple fabric that isn't corduroy, they had baby whale corduroy didn't have lines
My rule is prewash everything everything.

@@katwitanruna 60+ years here, and the one time I didn't prewash as my mother preached, I regretted the mistake. It was a hard learned lesson when the dress I made with hard-earned babysitting money shrank and was unwearable.
That red hounds toothy one is for Arabic headdresses mainly. Each country has its own colours and Red like that one is from Jordan.
Black and purple were Victorian mourning colours. When coming out of deep mourning, which was just black, dark purple was the first colour you could wear with black. My wardrobe has many items in black, in purple and sometimes a combo.
So my aesthetic should be "Victorian Mourning-core"... 😂

I see all the double knits and feel grateful that my dad was a sales rep for Springmaid, and my mom made most of our clothes from 100%cotton or cotton blends. There were nine of us kids. My dad had his DK pants and sportcoats, and we had our poly striped knit sweaters though. Thankfully, there were Levis, Wranglers, and OshKosh painter pants. Oye, as fun as those double knits look......they should be called "forever fabrics."😂

The white and more so the natural seersucker pieces are the color and weight of one of my Gunnie Sax dress. 1972-73. I wore it to prom.

So in high school I dyed some khaki overalls purple so I could be Wario for Halloween (it was really fun when Mario and Luigi backed out of the group costume) but I was still able to fit in them when I was first working in film and I may have made a certain now-famous actress laugh one day wearing purple overalls and fairy wings during short reshoots.
Oh, the horrors of 1970 polyester double knits. My sister used to call it bullet proof polyester.

Also, those two purple cotton-linens made me think of a walking suit version of Chenowith-Ostara's Easter gown.
Stephanie, when I was a teenager my Mother would shop at an outlet store called the Kitten Mills (Ontario , Canada) where the fabric was polyester double knits etc.
this bring back such fab memories . Mom made very stylish pants, pant suits , dresses etc. Easy care easy to sew. I was calling out what to make with each of those funky double knits! Haha I would love to make something lovely with far too many of your selections!

I remember that outlet store! Kitten Mills also sewed Chanel-ish style clothing. I have a jacket I found at Value Village. I think they also did blankets and other home goods. Such a loss.

My sister and I sewed for people when we were growing up so we used lots of double knit. Some of it was made so you could use either side!

I am late to the party but love the white fabric with the circles of blue flowers at 10:28. I don’t know why I love it!
I think this fabric would make a nice blazer to wear with navy blue slacks.

After watching multiple videos of all this fabric from the estate sale I am so interested in how you handle all this inventory. How you you store and find it once it sells, do you have some kind of SKU system. I am a crafter/ sewer (not good enough to call myself a seamstress) but I am interested in the small business side and how do you manage the amount that was in that estate sale.

Undercurrent is a rayon fabric developed to replace the more expensive china silk, organza or softer cotton batiste that were used for underlining structured garments like tailored suits and evening wear. Besides adding support, it also held hems, facings, etc. without stitches showing through to the right side of the garment. The cottonlike finish makes it easier to handle. Another brand name that is also used generically is Siri. Until clothing became less formal in general, it made the difference in looking home made vs. custom made.
Why not have a BIG Meet and Greet weekend? Seems like we could shop with you and meet you and enjoy meeting other like minded folk..
I know what kettle corn is, BUT what is kettle cloth?
A big meet and greet would be kind hard, in a storage unit, and would give off the wrong vibes I feel. 😂 But seriously, not enough folks nearby to really merit it. That is why I like to do these online version of sales. And Kettle cloth is sorta like a tougher version of a cotton blend, think making overalls and kiddo play clothes that are meant to get dirty.
The printed peach cotton blend might be older than you think. Because I swear that's what my Mamau made MY Easter dress out of...in 1980.
All of these are from pre-1981, most of the fabrics I find are from the 70's because the owner was winding down her operation into the early 80's
I remember my mom buying the double knits for Easter dresses. The white and cream color searsuckers were probably used as multi piece summer outfits, long vests, jackets, skirts and pants. Plates for the kitchen

The red/orange houndstooth was popular in the 1960s. My mother made a suit out of it. It wasn't good for her because she is only 4'10" and skinny. That bright large print swallowed her up. But that was the way she is to this day at the age of 90, she doesn't see how things really look, she sees things the way she wants them to look, hahahahaha. Freda Frump
Greenville, SC was the “textile capital of the world” until NAFTA came about and killed the entire US industry (thanks, Bill Clinton). Milliken was a very familiar manufacturer in my area. They are still in business, but they are one of the few left here. There were entire families who worked in the mills, as they were called. Mill villages were little towns built to house the mill workers and many still remain today.

I had multiple friends in college who had Milliken scholarships, and we would often go to the grounds like a park to hang out and study. This was in Spartanburg, SC.
I’m so sorry. I hope we can change that and bring the mills back.

The purple and tangerine cottons that are the same as the lime green -- hello, Daphne from Scooby Doo costume!
When I was a kid my Mum read me a Goodnight Moon kind of story about a little boy and his lion saying goodnight to their village. The book was purple. The illustrations were purple. The lettering was purple. Pretty soon my carpet, blanket and allot of my clothing were purple. That being said? I'm waiting for the linen to go live... I see coins...

The odd purple not quite seersucker fabric reminds me of one my grandmother made housedresses out of called plisse.

That slubby made with natural fibers has a particular name, but I can’t for the life of me remember what it is. It is worth quite a bit per yard.
That rose print looks like dot matrix computer print outs in colour
If you all have pants, skirts, dresses, jumpers in your wardrobe that are "ponte" you are basically wearing polyester double knit. They are quite similar. And they vary hugely in quality. There are pros and cons to it, I do not personally like it against my skin, but if it's lined it's actually comfy. I live in Minnesota and if have it as part of my layering system and it's great. I will have layers beneath and above and find it useful. Upcycling OLD double knit is way more sustainable than going to buy new ponte...
Could you pair fabric and patterns possibilities? I would like to try a vintage project but would not know how to pair it.

Me, too! Seeing the lavender reminded me of a pants sujit I had with soutache on it. I was in 3rd/4th grade. . . 1966-67ish. I LOVED that pant suit to death!!
Plates or coins? I have no idea as it reminds me of how my friends parents, who were Greek and Italian, decorated their houses in the 1970's.
I will tell you what the orange and white is - it's the70s, that's exactly what it is! I can picture it as I write - a suit for Marlo Thomas to wear to work...the 70s...my least favorite colors ever...
