Doctors charge just for a consultation and “practice” we have been subsidizing the auto repair industry for far too long. That shows with the amount of techs leaving the industry and going to others that haven’t and have been charging accordingly and can pay well. We unfortunately have had to learn the hard way because shops have been racing to the bottom on price.

Years ago when I had my shop, a customer had a case of the "dead mouse odors" in his car. I found it behind the passenger's side kick panel, babies and all. The odor was so bad that I had to get a face mask in order to finish the job. So glad Mrs O found the mouse and the idea of keeping the traps in the van is an excellent idea! Love your vids, Mr. O and in fact, I'm binge watching them now. Thanks for your time and patience.

Nice catch Eric! Regarding the mouse in your wife's van, my wife did the same thing. She brought some plants home in the trunk and unleashed the little sucker. I had a mouse carry field corn up into the top of our Volvo's engine. He somehow got the corn into the timing belt area and dropped it down onto the crank pulley which caused the engine to jump time. After that experience, I made the best mouse trap ever by using a 5-gallon bucket with about 5" of water and drilled a hole at the top for a coat hanger. Then I drilled a hole in the center of each end of a can so it could freely spin on the hanger. I put peanut butter on the can so it was balanced and made a little ramp to the top of the bucket. Mice love peanut butter and go for it before anything else. I caught 12 mice over the next couple of weeks in my garage. Now I only get a mouse now and then. If it gets freezing cold put some anti-freeze in the bucket. I put a little bleach in the bucket as well. No smell, and you know right where the little suckers are. I've had them make nests on top of the cabin filter too...but no more. I tried sticky traps once and caught a baby bunny in one. Took me an hour to get the little fella out. He was missing a little hair but survived the ordeal. Love your auto repair videos. You are a fantastic auto mechanic. We could sure use more like you my friend. 😉

Another a great video. What a lot of people do not realize, is that damage done by a rodent to a vehicle is covered under automobile comprehensive insurance. In upstate NY, this coverage is relatively inexpensive, and lower deductibles should be considered. Besides rodent damage, comprehensive covers you if you hit a deer or if a rock breaks your glass. You are even covered for flood or a tree falling on your car. It would not be worth putting for the repair on this video. .But for more costly repairs it most definitely would. Moreover you can also utilize your rental reimbursement coverage. If you put a claim in, you may lose your free discount, but you would not be surcharged for the claim.

  • @Buc_Stops_Here

I do find it interesting the problems you find here. My car issues are so simple the diagnostic is easy. The brake pedal sinks to the floor, that is the master brake cylinder. The power window does not work, the motor was shot. Noise is coming from the rear wheels, the wheel bearings were going. The car shakes on the highway, the front struts were shot. All these problems were found quickly and easily on my Subaru and all happened in the last 6000 miles (between 120,000 and 126,000 miles) and I never had a problem before these four concerns. Now that it is all repaired, the car works like new again. I can only hope my problems stay this simple but if they don't perhaps Eric's videos help. Thank you for them.

I had a mouse claiming his residence in my 1967 Ford Fairlane 500XL. It was a battle finding him but with sweat and prayers he was defeated. There were things I tried to keep the Rodents away but could not succeed. I finally came across a product called Fresh Cab sold in the big box stores, also Rural King and Tractor Supply. It looks like a giant Tea bag and smells like a pine forest. But for $12.50 a box(4 bags per box) it does what it's advertised to do. Bags last four months but I keep them going for six. Only thing that works for me. Doesn't kill a thing, but mice take off for your neighbors garage.

The “ change oil light” was a bit of a clue as to the frequency of maintenance being performed.
Anyone that thinks, well that was an easy fix so you shouldn’t charge never owned a business. You are more than entitled to be paid for your time and knowledge. An inexperienced mechanic may have worked for hours before finding that problem. Mice in your car is the cost of living in Gods country. I spent many summers living on a small farm between Savona and Bath NY 60 years ago. Lake Keuka was a favorite spot.

For 28 years I worked on Honda motorcycles (primarily GoldWings). When the GL1800's came out we immediately found the owners that lived in the 'country' had mouse problems
getting into their air filter. I solved the problem by putting screen over the 2 air intakes. Pop rivets held the screen on.....and no more mouse problems.

Good video Eric. I once had a similar Escape with the same engine and same problem before and learned from a tech at the old shop I used to work at long ago that there was a bee caught inside the mass air flow sensor that caused the start and stall issue. I wonder if you know ASL (American Sign Language) because you got some signing at the end there. My wife taught me sign language for the most part. Good job. Take care buddy.

Recently my 1996 maxima stumbled and fell on its face when accelerating from a stop. I've had this car since high school, it was my first car, I'm 35 now. But with the knowledge I've picked up from this channel I was able to diagnose it and fix it even without a check engine light on. I plugged in my autel and decided to look at live engine data and I notice the MAF sensor was flat lined. I tapped on it and it came back to life, tapped on it again and it flat lined.
Thank you SMA for the great content and knowledge you provide.

Happened to our RV when we were driving in heavy rain in Northern Ontario. The air filter got saturated and released a bee that got logged in the MAF orifice. It would run on the starter motor and die as soon as we released the starter. We initially thought that it was a failed fuel pump. Had we known that unplugging the MAF would have allowed us to continue we would have tried it. Anyway a $500 tow bill to the Ford dealer in Wawa. It was fixed in about an hour. Lesson learned. I switched to a K&N filter and now I carry a scan tool.
