Great video! You hit the nail on the head: superstitious practices, including Catholic devotions used wrongly, are from fear and desiring to have control over our lives instead of placing our trust completely in the Lord. 💙 Thank you, JD.

I believe in the promises attached to these sacramentals....
    * Brown scapular - “Whosoever dies clothed with this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.”, but that doesn't mean he will go to heaven directly, there is purgatory to purify one's sins. :-)
    * Miraculous Medal - "Those who wear it [Miraculous Medal] will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck. Those who repeat this prayer with devotion will be, in a special manner, under the protection of the Mother of God. Graces will be abundantly bestowed upon those who have confidence.”
Sacramentals, they are (visible) signs of being saved and heavenly helps for those who desire to be saved despite of their weakness/failure when facing temptations. God is almighty. If someone was to be damned to hell (by his own choice), he wouldn't be able to keep these sacramentals with them.
But wearing/using them with appropriate attitude is very important for growing in faith and in relationship with God. Our goal is not "just get to heaven" but to be the person that God wants us to be.

Fr. Mike expressely said the SOME people wear that as a good luck charm. Here in my country kids are given scapular to wear specifically because of the belief that the scapular itself will ward off harm from the children, thus removing its use as a symbol of your faith and rather becomes a self-contained point of dependence in of itself.

    I wonder
    1) how I can know for certain if my prayers are devout?
My prayers are mostly in the car driving a long daily country highway commute to work. I use MP3 recordings stored on phone playlist and I just pray along with them. sometimes my mind wanders but most of the time it does not. Most of the time I'm able to focus on the words. But once in a while I have to focus on the traffic, like when I come to the occasional intersection every so many miles.
Perhaps it's scrupulosity but I wonder if
    2) I'm not getting the things I'm asking because Jesus doesn't consider my prayers to be devout.
Or if theyre just fine and I just need to be more patient.
    3) what for you is the difference between trying to manipulate the will of God which is a sin against the first commandment, vs novenas, sacramentals, asking holy souls for prayers etc. Can God be swayed in how He executes His plan?

    • @ylandryrati
      @ylandryrati 6 днів тому

To stay focused is a challenge I've yet to master while praying. Still, long prayers such as novena, litanies, rosary are necessary to go deeper in our faith. The more time you spend in God's presence, the better for our souls, the more prepared you are for Heaven where we'll basked in his Holy presence. So why not get prepared ahead of time? Long prayers open you to his Presence, He talks to you, and show things about yourself you would never have figured out on your own. Just keep going, you are on the right path, because there is no such thing as too much prayers.🙂

The physical object i.e. sacramental, idol, icon, insignia-whichever word you prefer is appropriate as long as you are not putting your faith in the object. I have worn the same gold chain with a cross pendant for over thirty years only removing it a handful of times. My father gave it to me, he passed... but it represents my love for our Father--Jesus Christ, as He is the only God. The intermediaries are fine by me as long as the focus remains on/in Jesus...And it's ok to question your faith--I'm doing it as I tap away but then I'm grateful for Him again. It's probably the most outrageous example of superstition I've come across, and the fact that they uphold it at the expense of fiancés being tempted (or further tempted) to fornication, cohabitation and above all indifference to sin, is exactly why Church teaching rightfully opposes superstition. Not to mention, the effect this could reasonably have on other family members' perception of the faith, since younger, unmarried ones will grow up to see this "picking & choosing" of what to practice or not as acceptable, or even encouraged by the Church. Properly Sanctified Sacramentals not only involve Devine intervention in their revelation to the church but also require the responsibility to each grace or promise/Protection which is assigned to the individual at the communion rail(where The Divine presence of our Lord is present in the Eucharist and all His Sacraments) via the universal and hierarchical and solemn blessing of the omnipotent Holy Trinity- Father, Son and the Holy Spirit.
    So, Sacramentals are not Superstition!
Insinuating such a thing is a complete lack of understanding of Catholic Dictrine.
This is a great topic and yes there has always been an issue with misconception of superstitions within the Catholic Church. The solution is to clarify our sound Doctrinal belief to the informed and uninformed as well. Great topic!!!

During the covid pandemic, my parish separated those who were vaccinated from those who weren't. Some thought only the vaccine would save them, yet they also thought that if they got to close to the unvaccinated, they might get sick. (If that's the case, why get vaccinated? It did no good.)
Worse of all, our parish perpetuated the anxiety by separating the parish into two groups and by mandating masks.
What Father Mike says about anxiety played a big role in the superstition of the unproven vaccines and the dumb masks.

If you think masks are useless, tell that to the surgeon who’s performing open heart surgery on you. If you think all precautions are pointless, then drink water straight from the tap when there’s a local boil-order in force.

the church shuld have cracked down on this centuries ago and didn't. I grew up believing in the power of the brown and green scapular as intermediates to God's power and it is WRONG Personal apparitions as St. Paul said are not to be placed over the true revelation. We only need the bible and Holy Tradition. I wish we would stop depending on apparitions over the apostolic tradition. They are good only so much as they lead us to God but when they come with specific and extra biblical etra magesterial conditions-even the fatima prayers in the rosary-they are not to adhered to.if we believe they come with a promise. Our Lady is enough, and Jesus is definitely more than enough, why do we need to add these personal revlations to be imposed on all the faithful. I believe the apparitios are good only in what they represent and how they turn us to Jesus, not when they are imposed on the faithful as a whole. This is also what the church universal teaches.

A good video but incomplete. If you are going to talk about having faith in religious objects and symbols, for completion sake, you HAVE to include sacred objects in your discussion and most specially those that have been blessed by a priest (medals, crucifixes, rosaries, scapulars, holy water, etc.) because these objects, once blessed become sacramentals and then do offer a degree of protection, particularly of a spiritual nature, which are obtained through the Church’s intercession. Through these sacramentals, people are disposed to receive the primary effects of the sacraments, and various occasions in life are sanctified.
I agree completely with what you say about superstitions, yet sacramentals are NOT that. While sacramentals do not confer grace as sacraments do, they play an important role in preparing the faithful to receive grace and sanctifying their lives. The blessing imparted on these objects by the Church does invoke God’s protection and help, aiding the faithful in their spiritual journey.
You can always read up some more on this in the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs CCC1667 and 1670.
Thanks for the video. God bless.

Touching a piece of wood isn't ' superstition ' . People did it in medieval times because Jesus was crucified on a piece of wood and it didn't turn out bad. The devil lost the last time a Christian touched a piece of wood. It signifies the cross. However if you don't know it refers to the cross and your faith in Jesus then it's superstition.

Sorry, you got it wrong, brother. Father Mike is a fine preacher and apologist, but he suffers from excessive scruples, due to being a Catholic priest imersed in a Protestant culture. If he was a true craddle Catholic from Latin America, he wouldn’t waste his time nagging about people’s beautiful devotions, and concentrate more on the growing lack of faith in American society, and on the quasi-Puritan shyness American Catholics feel about devotion to saints and to Our Blessed Mother. You guys just don’t get the whole thing about the Incarnation, the Communion of Saints, and the Mystical Body of Christ, do you?

    Terrible title, 'Scapular or God'?
As if it cannot be both. It is not superstitious to wear a scapular, hold/wear a rosary, keep prayer cards, wear medals, or hang/wear a crucifix.
The Blessed Virgin specifically said, "whoever so shall wear this brown scapular shall not suffer eternal hellfire". Making fun of devoted brothers/sisters who may get anxious for not having their scapular on is NOT decent and it doesn't entail that the person is has superstition.
If you enrolled in the scapular than you SHOULD be wearing it! .. Not out of 'superstition' but because Our Heavenly Mother asked us to and you promised that you would!
Breaking your promise to GOD is Farr worse than being 'superstitious'

As much as I respect Father Mike, it almost sounds like he's Protestant, suggesting we shouldn't look to someone other than God. This implies he's saying not to pray to Saints or Mary. Either something is really wrong here, or it hasn't been explained properly. The reason people wear the rosary and scapular has been passed down by the Mother of God through Saints, with hard evidence supporting it even to this day. Once again, the message here is confusing, or it hasn't been explained properly.

That's not what he said. Sounds like perhaps your (mis) interpretation is filtered through your experience - do you engage in a lot discussions with Protestants or apologetics?
Don't just take some phrases out of context, listen to the whole sense that is meant.
All what he said was completely orthodox and he wasn't against these devotions at all, only how these devotions may sometimes be approached (in a superstitious way).

    • @isaiah3872

That's not what he's implying at all, and we can be sure of this since he has videos clearly expressing his belief in the communion of saints & asking for their intercession. Since their souls are now in perfect union with God (this is NOT to say that they've become god/gods too) asking the saints to pray for us & with us to God is still an act of looking to Him & His sovereign will, not apart from or in competition with it.
But there are people who, through poor catechesis, scrupulosity, popular cultural influences (non-Christian influences) or all of the above, uphold a strong sense of superstition linked to the maintenance & wearing of the devotional objects themselves, rather than a stronger & more important sense of piety & trust in the love of God to provide for them even if for some reason these objects were no longer in their possession. Not to mention that some personal superstitions attached to the wearing of these devotionals are based on attempts to "ward off" evil in pagan or syncretic religions. Scapulars & blessed chaplets (among others) grew out of approved private revelations anyway, and we're NOT required (this is Church teaching) to use them, however popular they are. No brown scapular? God is still a gracious God. Actual grace & sanctifying grace in the sacraments (which we must believe in & have recourse to), as well as the intercession of all saints (through the communion of saints, which we must believe) are still available.

Your clearly not a very open minded person. God is greater than your box safe logic and father Michael is not that deeply spiritual. The sacramentals are a act of faith, very important. The object becomes holy because god had divinely touched thee object . Jesus is in a object called bread that we eat . His holiness enters the bread then we eat the bread that is the object that becomes Jesus. You are a misguided catholic and father Mike is a lost progressive priest and I will pray for him

So it's superstitious to believe that the rosary itself will protect you, but somehow it's NOT superstitious to believe that you will be protected by an invisible God if you pray the rosary? To me they both sound superstitious. Moreover, Catholicism recognizes, dignifies and encourages praying to the Holy Mother. If fact, the prayer most often repeated when praying the rosary is the Hail Mary. Well, according to what Father Mike said at 4:57, praying to Mary is SINFUL because Mary isn't God. So does Father Mike not really know what he's talking about, or is the Catholic Church the land of mixed messages?

When you pray a rosary you´re not praying to worship Mary, you are asking Mary to pray with you in that very moment so she helps you meditate on Jesus life. Read the Hail Mary itself, it never says anything liike Mary save me, it says "Pray for us sinners".

You ask for intercession from saints.
Also, Father Callahan had a book on the Rosary. The lady would be victim of Ted Bundy was saved because she had fallen asleep praying the rosary. Whne ted Bundy had finished murdering her roommates he went to her room and was propelled out of it by a force.
Also personally, I was approached by a man at the drug store a couple years ago. He asked for my number and we chatted. Then my phone screen went to the Virgin Mary, he literally saw a glimpse of that and was running down the aisle screaming that he would never convert. So bizarre!! He tried sexting me later. I blocked him

That's not praying TO Mary, that's asking Mary to intercede. It's not any more praying to Mary than asking your cousin to pray for you during a difficult time is praying to your cousin.
