TLK is one of my absolute favorite movies, I watched it repeatedly as a child, had it memorized word for word for years, and I could still recite most of it today. While there's moments in "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" that are probably some of the most impactful moments in the whole film, as a whole I'd call this the best song in the movie. Jeremy Irons vocal performance and expression brings a lot to it, and it's a great piece of character and story building as the song progresses. I actually didn't know Elton wrote ALL the music for this movie, thought it was just some; the part where the hyenas sing "prepare for the chance of a lifetime" has a lot of "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" to it.

It really is a brilliant tune. The orchestrations in the Lion King are so boss. I dearly hope they finally release Elton's demo someday.

My only problem with "Be Prepared" is that it's way too short. I'm a flute player myself and I would love to play this song, but I'm not sure it would sound as good. Unless always played in a lower register, it may be hard to get it to sound dark and menacing enough.

That major/minor thing you pointed out with the Eb/E is used to great effect in Fiona Apple's "Hot Knife". It's a song I think you might enjoy because the orchestration is so minimal but effective (and TIMPANI!).

When used in singing to be more musically expressive in relation to the context of the song, the technique you may be thinking of is 'phrasing'? Many crooners and blues singers in the day were great examples of this, Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra to name a few were well known for their mastery in this area

Did you notice the change for the final verse? Jeremy Irons lost his voice, and they had not time to wait for hislm to recover, so the final verse beginning "so prepare for the coup of a century" is actually sang by Jim Cummings, mimicking Jeremy.

I will never forget. When I was in middle school, we put on a super cheap performance of the lion king (it sucked btw) and the teacher decided to CUT be prepared because she "didn't like it." I spent MONTHS trying to convince her to keep it in and let us do it. She never budged. Even the parents that came to see us were disappointed that we cut it. After we were done with it, the most common question asked to us was "what happened to be prepared?" I will never forgive that teacher for cutting that scene. Especially because the kid playing Scar was the best actor in the class and wasn't a half bad singer. The show would have been so much better with it in...
