I'm Not The Only One Who Thinks This About The Indian Challenger, Right?

- Am I the ONLY person who thinks this about the Indian Challenger? This bike has SUPERIOR comfort and handling, but it also runs HOT and has some other quirks I discuss in this video.

So, if you own a Challenger, is this something ya'll just live with?
So the throttle is a lot more twitchy in Sport mode, I ride in Standard most times because of this. The Challenger has epic power so Standard is more than fine. You also might want to make sure they have properly synced the throttle bodies, but you'd have hoped they'd have done that to a loaner.
I don't own a Challenger, but I am very familiar with them.
The best way to explain the Indian throttle is this.
In Tour/Rain Mode you only have 40-50% of available throttle
In Standard Mode you have 70-80% of available throttle
In Sport Mode you have 100% of available throttle
So think of it as a touchy throttle (think hair trigger), instead of a twitchy throttle.
Glad you're enjoying the Challenger this time around!
On my 2nd Challenger, and doing an extreme build with this one. Want to do a review video on it? LoL!
Sport mode on this bike can be like an on/off switch, especially if you're attempting a leisurely back road cruise. Yet, getting a tune from anyone will adjust and very much improve this as well! When I got the Lloydz Garage tune on the first bike, I literally could tell the difference of improvement before leaving the parking lot!
Definitely need new bars, who keeps those stock anyway? haha Especially when you're used to the bars on your RG! And if it isn't cold out, take off those engine guard covers immediately!
Ride safe HTW! Thanks for the videos of the Challenger! Hopefully... they let you keep it a little longer!
The Heat was solved by eliminating the Cat with a cat delete. As far as the throttle response was to get a download from Loydz. This solved all my problems.
So if you could only buy 1 bagger. You going road glide or challanger and why.
I love my Challenger Dark Horse...got the Lloyds tune pipes it's awesome!!
I almost bought the challenger when it was released back in ‘19. But I was really enjoying the Chieftain I had more than trading. That being said I sold my Chieftain last year, four months after I put a deposit on the new 22 Chief Darkhorse specifically from Indian of Charlotte. To see more I have posted some videos explaining everything 😅
I own a base model challenger.I love it! Yes it does get hot but I don't have the lowers and I don't notice it until I stop. Taking out the cat on it will help with the heat some. (I still have mine) an exhaust helps with the sound as well. The brakes are adjustable but I have huge feet so it hasn't been an issue for me in particular. Also note this bike has traction control on it which is helpful for most daily riding but can get in the way if you ride a bit more aggressive. (It can be turned off but has to be each time you turn the bike on).
I live in South TX where it is hot to very hot to unbearably hot year round. Since I've been riding my Challenger, I've noticed it's actually much cooler on my legs than any bike I've ridden/owned before (Indian Chief, Harley Sportster). I don't have closeouts or lower fairings so that probably makes a difference.
I've also not noticed any twitchy-ness on the throttle but I primarily ride in Standard mode. Sport mode does have an adjustment period if you've never had instant, or near instant, power delivery from the throttle.
I'm picking up my 2023 Pursuit Dark Horse Premium tomorrow from Iron Pony. Can't wait to put some miles on it!
🤔👍👍🤔
No the throttle lag was really bad on my challenger. Did the upgrade stage one cams, intake and tune. It is better but still there a little bit. Loydz garage has a tune that is supposed to completely get rid of the throttle lag and make the bike run better and cooler. I am definitely going to check it out!!
I have a 21' Roadmaster that I bought new. I rode a Challenger before I bought the Roadmaster. The Challenger is great, but I just wasn't as comfortable on it as I am the Roadmaster. I'm 5'7" just like you, and I just felt like I was sitting way too high on it. I like a bike you sit in not on. Those closeouts block a lot of air. My Roadmaster has doors on the lowers that I can open for more air. I do that in the summer. Mine has the 116 air cooled engine and it does give off a lot of heat. I find I get more heat from the air cleaner cover then the exhaust. If you haven't ridden a Roadmaster, try one to see what you think. I had throttle lag with mine also. I had a flash done when I had Rinehart slip ons installed and that seemed to take care of the throttle issue. I have a little over 8100 miles on mine and no issues.
Love the Indians! Would you also be able to test ride the Chieftain and maybe even the Springfield by any chance? 😍
I have over 30,000 miles on my Challenger and it's truly the best I've owned. An aftermarket tune will smooth out 1st and 2nd gear when doing slow maneuvering. The KST Commache bars put you in a good position for long distance riding or slow maneuvering. I'm leaving this Saturday morning for my 3rd IBA ride on this bike. More Challenger content please 😁. Also, those soft lowers will definitely hold in the heat. The nice thing about those are they easily snap off and can be tossed in the bags.
Love chieftain 116 air cooled resale will be much higher than a watercooled pursuit the pursuit is a better touring bike, still purist prefer big air cooled engines
The Heat... Is what it is, thats the compromise of making so much power! Thank God its liquid cooled😉. The lower close-outs trap a ton of heat, also "Cat-Delete" helps. I live in South Florida & when in motion my bike runs @185F / 210ish when stopped. As far as the throtle "twitch" without getting to technicly deep, it's an Indian issue/trait, but gets resolved with any of the after market tunes. 2020 Challenger DH
I OWN A 22 CHALLENGER LIMITED! Let me help you out a bit. The lowers: oi, take them off NOW! I bought them a few months after I got the bike and it changed my riding from thermal pants under my gear, extra warm socks and looking at those bluetooth heated socks to riding with no thermals. They close off all air through the bike and channel the heat from the radiator up and out. It's like having a heater core with vents from your car. Nice on a day colder then 60 degrees. Very cold without them. Oppressive in 70 plus degrees 🥵. You didn't happen to open the 2 vents in the ferring, did you?
The windshield. That one looks tall, might be the 13 incher. I have the 8 inch (shortest stock) on mine and it is ALMOST perfection. On the highway with it up, I need just another 2 inches, so the short flared shield would probably fit you best.
Plenty of riders have switched their bars out for taller bars. Ridingfish, Beardedbobber are just a couple of the more famous riders/youtubers. You have the meat hook style, miter style as well as Indian's reduced reach and extended reach. I am 5 ft 10, and Honestly, the standard bars are perfect. Not shoulder pain for me too and no hunched over back anymore. It just fits!
I have not noticed a change in temps while playing around with cylinder deactivation, so I just leave my cylinder on all of the time.
The throttle: Really!?!? Lagging!?!? I will agree with the "Twitch", ESPECIALLY IN SPORT MODE. Sport mode is twitchy as all get out. I felt a good lag on the Thunderstroke Engines, but the Power Plus...NOPE! It feels like my throttle cable bikes.
You need to take this bike on a long trip, get the trunk/sissy bar and the Rider's back rest. I just ran from Jersey to Lake George today and it was a dream.
Now, the electric throttle in your cars: Your Hubby's new truck is electric throttle, your CRV might be electric throttle (can't remeber if they went electric in your generation or the next generation).
Finally: What mount did you use for your go pro? I almost bought the ciro mounts. I am trying to move my go pro from my Triumph to my Indian and I can't find mount that looks like it works. Yours looks near perfect.
PS- next time you go to Rohman's or the Hawk's Nest or anything within 2 hours of North Jersey, hit me up. I will show you some roads that will have you squealing like you do when you see dogs.
-Stay safe, Rubber side down and keep this info coming. Thank you!
Enjoyed it kid! Your hair looks great before and after!😊❤👍🎉🎉🎉
Regarding lane changes on resurfacing HIways, I'll almost always time my lane changes on an overpass. They're concrete and generally don't get touched while resurfacing the road.
Hello neighbor...another great video and liking the Indian...cottonwood has my allergies kicking in overtime...glad you're home safe from your trip...much love
It runs hot, Its something that everything else makes up for.
Had a 17 Roadmaster, then a 2020 Challenger Ltd, now a 22 Pursuit Premium Darkhorse Icon.
🇺🇲🇺🇲
I just purchased a brand new 2022 Indian Challenger and the thermostat on the screen never gets higher than 212° before the fan kicks on. Those closeouts in front of the bike trap a lot of heat no matter what kind of bike you run. My Lowrider ST runs just as hot if not hotter but there's no fan to cool it down when sitting in traffic lol! Hope to see you on the convoy when it comes to Columbus!
I own a 22 Scout Rogue and the throttle is exactly the same. So yeah I just kind of live with it. What I have found is that over time I have basically started to 'pre-load' the throttle just a hair right before I'm ready to move from a stop to take out that tiny bit of play. It's kind of becoming muscle memory but sometimes I do forget and I get that jerky start or shift. It's a thing I might never fully get used to, but I can live with it and it's nowhere near a deal-breaker!
Before and After: Both lovely!
“No this isn’t natural, I’m not one of Gods favorites” 😂😂😂 had my wife and I rollin!!!
😂😂
The throttle can be taken care of with an aftermarket tuner such as lloyds.
I have both an Indian Springfield and a couple of Harley's including a 21 Ultra Limited. You do get used to the throttle on the Indian quickly, and I don't even think about it when moving between bikes at all anymore. Sport Mode is a bit too twitchy, while it was fun for a bit, I found that I stick in standard, I feel you have more control there. Honestly, there are things to love about both motorcycles, and I expect to own both for as long as they keep putting out great bikes.
I completely agree, pick up the bike and go for distance. You are on a beautiful bike and definitely should bring it south. ;)
I rented a Springfield darkhorse one time, and I had the same reaction with the throttle. I am also a Harley girly, but that delay was tricky.
Why did you not take off the soft lowers? It would have made it much cooler on your ankels.
I wish I could do what you do and be able to ride all the different motorcycle because I haven't been riding for a while so that would be a good way to get started again 😊
I own a challenger and a others have said, the close-outs are the heat issue you're experiencing. For me the twitchy throttle was solved via a software update. I also ride in standard mode which helps with the twitchiness too as the bike just wants to run hard in sport mode. Got 20k on mine and love every mile!
Software update....
I really hope to ride an Indian Motorcycle one of these days. Nice video!
I own a 2021 Challenger Dark Horse. Never had a problem with the heat but I don't have lowers and live in a year round cool environment. Far as the twitching, I've just gotten used to it. I've road many bikes and just mentally know that they are all different and adjust to them. I also ride a Livewire regularly so yea. I just treat every bike for what they are. If there is anything else you'd like to know, feel free to ask!
I took the Challenger for a ride a couple years ago, and remember feeling that it could be a little more POLISHED. A VERY good machine though.
I have the 2022 Challenger limited spirit Blue. I am waiting on the 2023 Pursuit Elite.
I rode the challenger to Kentucky from Myrtle Beach all interstates the bike is sure footed. It does get hot but I have read that a cat delete will manage the leg heat
Yes! Cat deletes are the best
Enjoyed this video ,Subscribed
Love from DeKalb Mississippi USA 🇺🇲
Thats why i like carbed bikes. No computer to catch up to what i want to do
Love your videos. Maybe you can help me how to get the right Go Pro and equipment to start my own Channel. I always loved videoing things on my phone and giving commentary of my trips. Thanks for all you do.
👍👍
I have a '22 Indian Chieftain and I noticed recently that the heat near my right ankle is sometimes unbearable. I also have lowers on it.. and plan to take them off over the weekend. I don't remember the heat being so bad last year.. so maybe the lowers are contributing to it. I've also heard that a better tune can help reduce the heat.. and I'm planning to do a dyno soon.
Gut the cat. It’s on the right side of the bike. That is the source of your heat and misery.
That Indian seems like an awesome bike.
That is the bike and color that I want.
I think the fairing on the Indian looks like a laundry basket with a headlight.
Deer travel based on the moon phase so a couple days a month they'll get up to feed in the middle of the day.
Wish I had the money to make the Challenger my next bike. This must have been recorded when 'the haze' was over Ohio and when you literally couldn't see, and it made it cool down.
I have a scout bobber and it def had throttle issues till i put a tune on it, butter smooth now.
I own an Indian Pursuit. The heat is only bad because you have the close outs on. If they were off, the heat would be fine. In sport mode my throttle is twitchy, but not laggy. I ride mainly in standard mode because I don’t like the twitchiness.
The ride is indeed extremely comfortable. You should try a Pursuit premium with adjustable suspension and the nicer seat. It’s even better.
My chieftain does get my left thigh warm at times, but never unbearable. I had to ride my cousin's wife home once because he had to go to work being on call. Everyone else was already two up except me. She said it was a smoother ride and less felt heat for her.
Ok I smoked it… 🤣 I think a lot of us listener types like talkers! That’s why you have so many fans! 😁 Have an awesome day!
Love your videos I can listen to you all day
I agree with comments about the lowers affecting leg heat but if you owned one that you could modify to your liking, a stage 1 with a proper tune would elimnate a whole lot of that heat since the manufacturers have to abide by the epa and all factory bikes run lean. Lean equals heat.
Love the bikes
I don't have any experience with the Indian Challenger, other than a small test ride. Question, are you in talks with HD to ride the new CVO models. I.E The Road Glide CVO or Street Glide CVO, not the anniversary edition; but the new platform CVO. Love your content, such a real person about what it is you enjoy about the sport.
Could you eventually make a review of the Indian Roadmaster?
I own a 2023 Pursuit Limited Premium, the same as the Challenger but with all the goodies on it.
Heat is no issue. I rode in 97° weather this past weekend with the vents opened, and not bad at all. It was a little warm setting at a traffic light, but nothing compared to an air cooled V-twin. While riding my feet, legs, etc., were comfortable.
In Sport mode, the throttle is touchy. The ride modes are designed to give you quicker throttle response. That can be adjusted with a tune. Standard mode is a-lot less touchy, and what I use when riding two up. Rain Mode (Grandpa Mode) should speak for itself, LOL.
My Wife and I enjoy the how smooth the suspension is. She has mentioned it is night and day difference between this Pursuit and the Chieftain. I love the fact when switching between 1 or 2 up riding all i have to do is press a button and it adjusts the suspension accordingly. I am not a fan of the manual adjustment.
Riding on the HWY is a game changer. The wind management is awesome and when riding next to large trucks, the buffeting is very manageable. The frame absorbs most of it if not all depending on wind conditions.
The only negatives I have is that Indian needs to allow more room for the passenger when riding two up. There are aftermarket options to provide two additional inches for the passenger. Also, they shouldn't ship bikes without the recurve windshield. I am being super picky though.
Out of the five motorcycles i have owned this is the only one i havent spent tons of money on upgrades. I have only added highway pegs, kuryakyn heal shifter and a tank protector to prevent myself from skuffing the paint on the tank from my gear.
I encourage you to try a Pursuit Limited Premium. I promise you will be impressed.
Overall I love my Pursuit!
I really enjoy your content and thanks for sharing. Ride safe.
🇺🇲🇺🇲👍🇺🇲🇺🇲
I loved my Challenger but prefer the look of my RGS
I'm sure you've mentioned this before but how tall are you. You seem to be a good fit on the Challanger? Ken
Het the Challenger back! Indian, please gove it back to her. Thanks
Hey Jess. Are you getting any of this lovely wild fire smoke from Canada? It's so gloomy here in CT today and, as expected, tomorrow too. @10:05 insert blonde joke here? Heh
When you were talking about the heat of the engine, it made me wonder if it has that feature that's on the newer FTR's where the engine steps down at stops to keep the heat down?
Are usually wait for an overpass because those are usually concrete and it’ll be flat again and I zip right over because I also hate trying to cross those
Awesome ride safe and enjoy
My Challenger Dark Horse definitely has a little bit of throttle lag and it's much more noticeable in Sport mode. It used to be a lot worse before a software update last year, so it is something that they can fix with software updates. As for the heat, it definitely runs a little hot, but the top end of the heat is "capped" so overall it runs cooler at highway speeds, if that makes sense. Mine runs between 182 degrees and 190 degrees on the highway.
Nice review keep up the good work Her Two Wheels ride a Challenger Elite
@8:05 - Deer Crossing sign over your left shoulder...maybe you really did see another deer Buckaroo!
Let's go Jess 💨💨💨💨🏁
⛽ GAS on it. ⛽
I own a 23 challenger, lol honey the windshield is adjustable right side handle bar controls, take it out of sport mode wont be so twitchy, there is a company that can tune the lag out if it still bothers you I guess I've gotten used to it, as for heat I have never felt it and I live in America's hot sweaty armpit..Tennessee but then again I left the cylinder deactivation OFF since I've first picked it up.
I’m aware lol. It’s lowered as far as it will go
I had a deer standing on the side of the road like that Sunday morning about 10am. Deer are not to be trusted. Its not the one I see that scares me, its her friend I dont see. Deer are rarely alone. I think of them like the raptors in Jurassic Park. The one I see is the distraction while his friend attack from the shadows.
😂 I feel you. Back in September, I looked away for like 3/4 of a second, looked up, and bam a doe and fawn running across. Barely missed mom, got the little one. 8k damage. Didn't go down though.
Not many twisties here in Northwest Ohio. Lol! Some pretty backroads but definitely need to hit up the 555 some time. Enjoyed the video. Take care and stay safe
👍👍
There are ways to mitigate the heat without spending a lot of money.....Captain Itch crotch cooler and chaps. Or gut the cat. Major heat gone. The throttle is not as instant as my Road King was. I prefer the Indian. If you rode it with the few mods needed to satisfy you, it would become your daily rider. Comfort, design, more advanced tech. Don't be afraid to go with the better bike when it's not a Harley. I did. My Chieftain is the best bike I've owned. I'm never going back to HD.
i haven't drove my car in over 2 weeks. it has not rained but 1 day in that span. I don't even know if it'll start lol
When you asked, Did I take my allergy pill?. I felt that.
Love from Mississippi 🇺🇲
All the new bikes especially high horse power bikes run hot. My Pan America is almost unbearable at times.
My husband loves the Challenger. He’s torn between buying the HD RoadGlide and this bike.
I own 2012 street glide 21:22
Which do you prefer Harley or Indian
Any chance you can talk Indian out of a Chieftain? Not for a review, but for your impression of it?
I think it's the Indian bagger you haven't been on.
Just askin...
Folks she's a HD loyal only ,most hate on Indian. Before you blast me yes I own a Challenger .I also own a HD lowrider st. Like em both. Many HD get riled up bout Indian they should be glad. The competition is great we ALL benefit with better products
If you think i’m a “loyalist” of any one brand, you haven’t been paying attention.
Would you ride Yamaha FJR 1300
I like Polaris products I own a 2014 Victory Cross Country but I cannot afford the Indian Challenger or Dark Horse they are way too expensive for me
So when ya gonna do a can am spyder!!!
That sucks we barely got any content with the bike
OK I asked too soon 5'8" are the bars and seat standard. you need to rip the fabric lower guards off. you will be getting a very poor air floe past their motor and your legs! Ken
👍😲🇺🇲
Ride both baggers with a 29” inseam at 5’2” 😂
how loud is the stereo ?
Pretty loud!
🇺🇲🍔🇺🇲
You get your own Drag Queen and a case of queer beer with a new Harley.
Sounds like a great time!
How about the wave. Lol. I'll be in my truck and giving riders the wave. Ever done that. Lol
OK buy one 😂❤
👍👍
Yes, Indian's will bake your inner thighs. Most Indian riders get a heat shield for the bike and remove the catalytic converter. I still hate stop and go traffic because of the heat the bike throws off. But love my Chieftain.
Challengers don't get very hot unless you have the soft lowers on. I've owned a Chieftain and 2 Challengers. The only time I get heat is in traffic when the fans kicks on.
It is in the programming 🇮🇱 the advanced aftermarket programs do not 🚫 do it 🇺🇲
The advanced aftermarket programming will kill the warranty 😪 mini dealers sell these bikes with A lifetime WARRANTY 💕
Hello, I'mGrant, I'm a single male Ohioian that moved to Tennessee. Great roads down here. I'm looking for a riding partner. Hit me up if you ever make it through here.
Hello good morning friend from Indonesia
No one out talks shadetree
Come on Honda, loan this girl a new Goldwing so we can get a full bagger comparison.
Uhhh. 😅 ua-cam.com/video/zSKvXg72mjk/v-deo.html
Guess I need some dad shoe’s myself …..I seen it and had forgotten. How embarrassing 🤦🏻♂️
You look beautiful blond just my opinion 😊
You could have at least reviewed the bike and ceased talking about your problems
I'm not a fan of the Challenger..
The heat is from those lowers take them off! Heat gone! To me the throttle is just different on my Pursuit than the Chieftain and Springfield I previously owned and put 50,000 miles on the two. I have also owned three different HD and it’s different than those as well. Not bad but different. Just like when you get a new car and things are different. Overall the Pursuit is the best bike I have ever owned! Comfort, power and handling and I didn’t have to spend an additional 8 grand out of the box to get it to this level!
For my Chieftain Dark Horse, I do not use the engine guard covers above 50 degrees, and I have no issues with the heat. But I also wear riding boots that cover my ankles and so on. This is what works for me. Thanks for doing the Indian.
I hope you get a chance to try that bike again more appropriate time or setting and unless you really don't need those lowers LOL now I'm left with more questions than anyting.
Like does it really make a difference in the heat with that rear cylinder cutting in and out
As a Chieftain owner that commutes in heavy traffic, yes, yes it does make an insanely huge difference lol. It's also a trade off, as I don't have the covers like this Challenger does so I get a lot more air flow but at highway speeds I also get a bit of wind buffeting. Not a lot though.
An aftermarket tune will take care of that throttle response
I have followed your channel for months now and fell in love with the bagger style. Because of you, and I want to thank you for all the informative content you create!
Watching your videos, I researched and researched what kind I wanted to go with, and I fell in love with the Indian Chieftain. 3 weeks ago, my brother and I got off work on a Friday, drove 7 hours to Tallahassee, picked up a 2019 white smoke Chieftain, and did a turn and burn back to Tennessee on Saturday. I have zero regrets buying it, and yes, the throttle is twitchy, but putting miles on it, you get used to it. The thing gets hot! Like hot hot! Mine doesn't have the covers, so that helps a bit as well as the cylinder deactivation. But man, that smooth ride, the ability to flat foot it and save my knees, the nice rumble and silky smooth brakes do spoil you. My poor brother refuses to ride it anymore because he would get in trouble with his wife if he came home with one lol!
Hey John, congratulations on the bike. I ride the exact same bike. Absolutely love the White Smoke Dark Horse Chieftain. It’s my therapy. Lol…be safe!
@@Armor1133 I love it, and I got it for the exact same reason. My brother and I both enjoy wind therapy! Be safe as well out there
Beautiful ride Jess! Not sure about the twitchy throttle, but the suspension is indeed top notch!
I have a 23 Challenger Dark Horse (Indy Red). Absolutely love it! Don’t have any lower fairing options so my ankles don’t get hot. I also don’t use the Rear Cylinder Deactivation on my bike.
I’ve upgraded the handlebars to KST bars which raise my arms a bit and I’ve got them pulled back a little, so my arms are pretty level and I don’t get that shoulder pain.
I hope Indian continues to work with you and allows you to take a long trip on one. Should be a great video.
About how much further back do you have them pulled? Are they smooth for slow speed maneuvers? I currently have the Indian reduced reach bars and they're not great for slow speed maneuvers, but awesome for long distance riding.
@@wickedqueenrides only pulled back about an inch or so. I may see if I can get them pulled back just a tad further as my elbows have been a bit sore on longer rides. But hey, that may just be because I’m an old geezer 😂. As for slow speed maneuvering, they stretch my arms out a bit more than I’d like. I think bringing them back about another inch would alleviate that issue too. The KST bars I have are 14” (I think), so they’re nice and tall, but could be too tall depending on your height. I originally ordered the reduced reach, but canceled when I got a good look at the KST. More my style and seemed to fit the bill. Hope you find the right bars for you. Trust me, I know how difficult it can be. Additionally, your saddle can make a big difference too. I put a Saddlemen Road Sofa on my bike and I feel like I sit a bit lower, and back a little. My recommendation would be to make sure you have the seat you want first, then do rour handlebars. Good luck and happy cycling!
@@TC_Rider63 Thanks for your quick reply! I'm a whopping 5'4.5"...lol yes, I need to include that half inch 😆. The reduced reach bars do stretch my arms way out during slow speed and tight turns. Probably just something I'll need to get used to being a shortie. I do enjoy not having the mid shoulder pinch that I used to have with my previous bike!
