I love hearing about people's DNF's! I'm with you about things that are boring but people say things like "Just wait until the third book! It gets so good!" and I'm just like . . . But I have so many other books that are good now.
I ended up DNF'ing over 50 books in 2022, it was a wild time.

I'm a 50-year-old who never was able to have kids due to medical incompetence. (I'm disabled and when I was diagnosed with cancer at 40, no one ever mentioned freezing eggs, even though at the time I had a partner.) Still upset by it. HOWEVER. I definitely don't define my self worth by that. and if I was about to die, I would be thinking about MANY different things besides my lack of a kid, lol.

I looove rant videos! A lot of youtubers are like 'No I want to keep my chanel purely positive' and don't have worstnor DNF lists (which is fine, to each their own) but personally, I adore a little rant or two. Especially when they include meaningful conversations about certain topics and how they are presented.
I only DNF'd two books this year. A little life by Hanya Yanagihara and one with a long German title that I'm sure no one cares for. 😂

I fell in love with Jade city. However, I understand how it can be slow for some people. For me I flew through it and I love the whole trilogy. Again your points are completely valid. If you didn’t like mafia then I understand why you wouldn’t like it. Me personally I love reading about mafia. Me personally I love all the characters and I feel like I knew what they would do in certain situations even from book one. It is funny how different people have different views! No hate ❤

Can I say that I get turned off by the overly-broken man? It gets to the point where I can’t forgive because I can’t move on to allow that redemption. I just read a romance that was really cool because of the main character and her girlfriends all with some kind of disability, brought up some amazing points and issues but the neuronormal man having a tantrum just didn’t do it for me. Even the resolution at the ending was just bleh.

I try hard to push through and not DNF a book. Heck, I even made it all the way through Piranesi because I was determined to figure it out. But the book I angry DNF'd last year was My Heart is a Chainsaw. The constant and unending references to horror movies. Aaahhhh!!!!! It was too much - annoying - like name dropping. That author was determined to let us know just exactly how much research they had done for the book. I was so angry I had wasted so much time reading that book when I could have been reading something else. Ugh. On the flipside I also read lots of great books last year.

I just felt like the characters' motivations were really flimsy and unbelievable and I just truly could care less about the murdered dude's wife and the main dude (can we have his rebel, witchy, potion-brewing teenage self back please?). I came into this book hoping Lucy would be the main character (my fav from The Family Upstairs), but was sad she seemed to be a minor character (spending her time at school bake sales? What?!?).

Bahahaha sooo we do twin again, I dnf ed half of these and all read ones in your list! I hated them. Particular ly horrific was forking out for a hardback lesson in vengeance from USA, to find myself laughing at the prose, I mean.. "She laid out the tarot cards, for the aesthetic" oh dear god save me from mediocrity in books! I couldn't even try to care, unrealistic and ridiculous and of no substance at all, but soooo pretty to unhaul.. Missing the mark. For actual dark academia vibe done for substance, I go back to classics like Maurice (though no murder here its dark enough at gays emotional turmoil in the elite upper class families, be prepared to cry) then we have as meat loves salt.. Maria McCann.. Very dark, and gay, kill your darlings (I forget the book name this was the film adaptation but liked the book) all of these outstrip every single book I've bought telling me its dark academia this decade...

I was horribly disappointed by Behind the Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkinson. I had only ever read Life After Life and loved it but her debut just didn't hit right. I didn't care about all of these people and it just seemed more like a case study of women who shouldn't have had children but did because of the patriarchy. you could give it a set nr of chapters or pages, and say if it hasn't graped your interest by then you will DNF it, and then find something you like, you can use to reward yourself everytime you actually DNF a book there don't deliver on the interest after those chapters/pages it was how I began DNF'ing even though it really felt like I was violating me in the beginning, when I tried to dnf a book there had lost interest
I will also when I Dnf write a little note on why, is it because it is boring, I am not in the mood for that kind of story, just not enough time or something else. Is it because it is boring or just annoying I will just get rid of it, but is it because my mood had changed or not enough time for reading I will pick it up another time, where my mood is for it or i have more time
I have now the rule that any book will get 4 chapters before I DNF'd and my reward was that I was alowed to buy another book or notebook or take away that day, which I don't use any more because it is not a probelm anymore with DNF'ing
