    Hey Marty, if it's not too humid in California, you can harness the power of evaporative cooling to cool your body down by up to 10 or 15 degrees.
    Here's how you do it:
    1. Buy one (or two) small cooling gym towels that are really absorbent.
    2. Soak them in water before you ride, then wring them a bit to make sure they are not dripping wet.
    3. Wrap it around your face and neck. I wrap the additional towel around my abdomen. Make sure it has excellent contact with your skin. You want to ride like you're wearing a wet t-shirt underneath.
    4. The towel will dry and lower the surface temperature of your skin exactly the way sweating works.
    5. Bring a ziplock bag with you and a bottle of water.
    6. Rehyrdrate the towel(s) by putting the them in the ziplock bag and pourin some water in.
    7. Each wet towel should last you up to two hours depending on how dry and hot the air is.
    This is how the military cool themselves down during desert missions. It is cheap and effective. But you can also buy branded cooling vests from motorcycle shops that does the same thing. Heat exhaustion is no joke!!
    Ride safe, Marty.

    A motor that is wound for speed and high RPMs will inevitably have poor efficiency at low speeds and high torque demands, like when climbing a long steep slope. It will draw a lot od curent and the motor and power electronics will overheat. This is the daily bread of RC car enthusiasts - finding the motor with the correct number of turns (=copper wire windings) and the correct gear ratio.

    Older rider, F'd ankle and a street tire on a loose dirt trail - you did well 👍
    I remember going on a trail the 1st time, had a V10F with steet tire, would not attempt that anymore with a street tire. Hitting some loose sand on my MasterV3 with a nice knobby is enough of a challenge for this 60 year old 🤣

    You know…. I have been thinking about this video… I have come to a conclusion…. See, the biggest problems arise from mostly people getting their wheels from the manufacturer or the dealer already put together(but 99 percent of the time manufacturers)in most videos where there was something wrong, screws, wires, offset plugs, broken this, no thread lock that… is where manufacturers who are doing their job in a hurry or whatever conditions. Then, we have our first impressions, and really…. It’s usually “NOT” about the wheel… more how it was assembled, broken screw and the like.. In all honesty, the only way that we can receive wheels and know exactly everything about it without that is “after” something that happened because of!!!
    In getting your wheel unassembled allows you to 1. Know your wheel!!! 2.know how it was assembled 3.if anything goes wrong your gonna know 4. And for us detailed oriented individuals that will go through and perfectly assemble, grease all that needs greased… and if anything wrong at that point… we will spot it before finding out in the gutter.
    I am not sure how and why wheels assembled is a thing and really… it should either be a choice, or just unassembled in the first place!!! I am a perfectionist and I love to tinker… and putting my wheel together myself would have been a must if it was an option… then, first impressions are about the wheel, and not the manufacturers (which people get the wrong impression about a wheel because a person got a lemon!!) it doesn’t make much sence… having them already put together, it would me me, or a reputable shop, not some manufacturing that if you ever got your haircut at Supercuts… you know… get in, get out that’s it, detail??? Right …. No, that ain’t gonna happen..

    For some clarification, it was Adam G who was running a little on the warm side, he was on the ex30 and getting into the upper 60s. Celeste and I were both on masters and running mid 60s. We stopped at one point and Adam's ex30 temps were about to touch 70, but as soon as he stopped sitting on it it dropped 5-10c. Sitting on the wheel and forcing it to support your weight at idle is actually pretty stressful on the controller especially since nothing has fans anymore. Definitely shouldn't overheat like you said, but the lack of airflow stacks up really quick.

    Nice observations about the Blitz being too light for the trail, and your Lynx envy. Just got my Sherman-L to complement the Lynx. It's great, the power is similar but definitely more of a body ride than the Lynx.
    I thought the Blitz had a speed motor, so not as much torque? Might not be the ideal wheel for the mountain, you're kind of confirming it.
    Scary just watching you ride the sand on that street tire.

    5 hours to go 24 miles@6.24mph average moving speed is brutal.
    I think the wheel temperature was fine. Seeing your stats, I believe the wheel temperature can be explained by the slow moving uphill ride. Most people are not going to have all of those variables happening at one time to create that scenario. If I can only go 6 miles an hour on a 24 mile ride I’m probably gonna turn around. 🤣

    • @ElectricUnicycles
      @ElectricUnicycles  2 місяці тому

      You read the stat's wrong. The "ride" was 5-hours long, which included a long rest break at the top with the other people, misc small breaks. The "movement duration" was 3h 51m. And of course this was a 25-miles trails ride that included climbing 4700-feet. These kind of rides are never going to be that fast.
      But yes, must people won't be riding like that. I think I explained during the video that the overheating wasn't really all the wheels fault.

    Great video Marty ... I don't quite understand why someone didn't hang back with you knowing you had ankle issues and a wheel that was a bit hot. Why the rush to get to the bottom? ... I would have thought travelling alone when there is a pack of 6-8 people someone would have hung back with you just in case .... hell if you would have had a major breakdown, you would have been screwed. I would like to think a few people at the end would have come looking for you had you not returned ... but maybe I'm reading too much into this one.

    It will be interesting to see a comparison review of this vs Lynx off-road. I like the Leaperkim wheels, but the price delta makes the Blitz appealing. And it doesn't need the pedals immediately replaced like the Lynx does. Leaperkim, please give us decent pedals out of the box.

    • @dnthmn117
      @dnthmn117 2 місяці тому

      I don't see this surpassing the lynx, but I agree the stock pedals are not good.

  • @BlockCylinder
    @BlockCylinder 2 місяці тому

    Marty, I know you and Roger are far more experienced and knowledgeable about these things than I am. But... I think overheating is totally reasonable under these circumstances.
    I don't know what affect air cooling might have on the Blitz if it's moving fast, but let's keep in mind that it's moving rather slowly throughout this hill climb. That's bad for airflow.
    Any electric motor is working its hardest when it is producing high torque at low RPM. It's going to draw the most current and generate the most heat. Climbing slowly up a loose mountain trail is just about the worst-case scenario for an electric motor. And for an EUC, riding slowly downhill is no relief because these wheels can't coast.
    On top of all of that, the Blitz has a motor wound for speed over torque, and you're demanding torque for a prolonged period of time. My guess is it would run cooler if you pushed it to a high speed on flat pavement all day.

    • @ElectricUnicycles
      @ElectricUnicycles  2 місяці тому +1

      It's been running fine (regards temperatures) on the street. Based on my years of riding EUC's (including mountain trails like this), many of the modern EUC's run cooler than the Blitz. Your points are valid, but they apply to all EUC's and clearly ALL EUC's do not run as hot as the Blitz. There were many EUC's on this ride and some ran hotter than others - see a comment below regarding this.
      For 95% of the use cases the Blitz will be just fine.

  • @scottsum1319
    @scottsum1319 2 місяці тому

    Nice to see the road Blitz doing fairly good on moondust. But ya, a good knobby will do wonders. Unsure if I would agree that a heavier wheel will perform better as that 'bouncing around' (or not) is primarily suspenion setup. & ofcos a knobby would provide much needed grip & more importantly confidence. Shall eagerly await the debut of the dirt Blitz, hopefully with adjustable ped height, as thats what I'm primarily interested in the Blitz for. Master v4 serves my street needs wonderfully (which fwiw easily blasted up our local overheat hill at a max of 52c). That overheating is somewhat concerning so def no batch 1 for me. But Fun trailin Marty 😅. BTW hows the low end torque vs the Lynx?

    • @ElectricUnicycles
      @ElectricUnicycles  2 місяці тому

      @@TheDownloader86 Have you ridden the Blitz? The V14 is a much smaller wheel than the Blitz yet it's a heavier wheel. So in relative terms, the V14 is a very heavy wheel. It feels heavy compared to the Blitz. It's just common sense that you don't compare 16-inch wheels to 20-inch EUC's. I'm not saying the V14 is bad. I'm saying that it's nonsensical to compare the two. IMHO.
