Hi "Mower Junkie" and "Mrs Mower Junkie" ... I watched this video and sat back and thought how lucky you are to have a such a Beautiful looking wife and your wife is into CB radio ... what more in life can any man ask for ... you are truly lucky but I think you already know that 😊
Great to see two wonderful people who are so close to each other must make for a happy life together ... I really like the video's you make ... Hi John and Mrs. Mower Junkie! I really appreciate having the opportunity to watch this UA-cam video. really great and motivational tests with CB radio. I think that the most cost-effective and fun form of communication is through CB radios! It is really great to know that some people are using CB Radios!
Thanks Paul, Barbara and I have a lot of fun with CB radios. Take care, Thanks for watching.
You two are a beautiful couple, your soul's are full of positive energy.May you two enjoy many years of prosperity.✌🙏
Thank you so much!!
Great test! Honestly, I think every radio operator wishes they could do the exact same test with their station. I know I do! And thank you to Mrs. Mower Junkie too.
One thing I wish you would’ve done in this video at the end was to show your antennas. That way we could appreciate the signal strength differences coming from your base station. I want to see your setup!

You guys are so cute! Thank you for the well-edited video showing both sides. That was a very clear comparison on am vs. ssb at varying distances with mobile and base units and amplified vs not and a good demonstration on use of the clarifier. You accomplished a lot in a short video. Thank you!
Thank You so much! Barbara and I both enjoyed Your comment. Take care, Happy Holidays.
Great video can't wait to test distances on my setup
It was good that she forgot to turn on the amp, gave us a chance to see the difference in signal strength. Thank you both for doing this test, I like any and all tests you do in these videos.
Hi John & Barbara, thanks for sharing your videos. God bless. Paul.
Awesome as always 👍🏻👍🏻 I installed my Tram 1498 today…it’s light years above my previous setup…thanks for the great information buddy ✝️🇺🇸🤙🏻🅰️
Great video, guys. It was a pleasure to watch - I couldn't help but smile through the whole thing. It's always fun to experiment with radio!
As an amateur radio operator, not much surprising in your test. The results you had all make perfect sense. The antenna makes all the difference. SSB is definitely a ham's playground as well. In fact, AM is more the novelty!!! It was surprising, however, how bad she sounded on AM. AM is generally thought to have better fidelity. It could be what a previous commenter mentioned, in that she was over-driving the mic, and over-modulating the signal. Easy remedy - move your mouth farther away from the mic. But she sounded crystal clear on SSB, so that one was a bit of a head-scratcher.
Glad to see CB making a comeback. Heck, after watching this video, I might have to go out, and get me an SSB CB radio, too!
Thank You Ralph. We had a lot of fun making this video. Thanks for watching. 73's from 151 and 268.

Great tests ,, taking a lot of guessing and myth out !!!
This is the test I always wanted to do
Thanks!!
The advantage of SSB over AM is 9db. In an AM transmission only one watt of the total power is actually used or needed to convey the intelligence. In SSB the carrier and the duplicate sideband are eliminated. Thus all the power of the amplifier can be used to convey the intelligence in one sideband. This will give the SSB signal a 6db transmit advantage. Additionally on receive only half of the bandwidth is needed. So you get half the noise, or an additional 3db of gain on receive. For a total of 9db.
Real world testing. Love.that. THX GUY'S! Barbara.

SSB is so much better for long distance transmitting. Last saturday I talked to someone 54 miles away with 80 watts of power on USB. My antenna is a Sirio GPE 27 5/8, 32 feet high on my house and the other guy used an Antron 99 on a mobile mast 19 feet up in the air. Might add that this was in the Netherlands from Hoorn (52.641997, 5.035176) to Ridderkerk (51.851664, 4.604634). 73 from the Netherlands.

I just ran into your channel... I getting into CB more these days and wondering have you done anything with FM and can you tell me what FM is good for?
I've never used FM, So I'm afraid I can't help with this one.
Im In the uk where we use Fm as standard on our 40 uk channels, its a nice clear mode with richer audio but once you drop the squelch its much harsher when monitoring low signal stations and picking out weak signals is harder than Am. I like ssb but not everyone has it. Fm is great for local contacts. hope that helps.
Well, all I know is back in the day I had a full quieting 2 way conversation on CB between Medford, NJ & Columbia, South Carolina using a standard 5 watt cb into a 102" whip. Ain't skip great?
You Guys Are Great. Thanks
Thank you! Take care, 73's from 151 and 268.
That realistic in the car has 4 watts dead key on am, should have more peak power maybe 6 to 8 watts?? Very cool radio, had a royce also 40 channels a year ago and they sound great..... Very cool video, women's voices sound always high pitch so they sound great on the radio for instance my wife has such a high pitch she doesn't need the radio
😁
on AM My car radio dead keys 5 watts and swings to about 10. on SSB it averages about 12 watts. Thanks for watching, Take care.
SSB has the better range , It might not have the fidelity if AM as it uses a sharper narrower filter , But this also aids in less noise Recieved on SSB.
I have always found it easier to understand people on SSB. But I agree, some AM stations have great full range sound. Thanks for watching, 73's from 151 SC.
I have done from base to base over 50 miles ssb... am about the same on legal output power of 4/12 watts am ssb

Great test thank you it was fun to watch
Sorry, But it would take an obscene amount of money, to get Me to part with that radio. Thanks for watching, 73's from 151 SC.
On AM Barbara had too much modulation ( prolly too much mic gain ) so Her voice sounds bit distorted even if No positive modulation peaks (wich can go negative if more modulation) . I've see you tryed to use the clarifier so if it works also on AM (wich sounds weird to me because it shouldn't work as isn't required) you really should set it for zero beat : tune the carrier on BOTH sidebands ( Upper & lower ) till the zerobeat . That way you're set . Of course the SSB is more efficient...and it's "common use" to use the upper side from twenty meters band (14Mhz) . It's just GREAT to see someone who have REAL fun playing the radio. So thanks for sharing the video, keep playing with your radios and be safe both of you ! '73 de Adriano, iz3svi .
I use Amplified dynamic microphones on My radios, and they sound great when I use them. But Barbara sounds much better when she uses a ceramic microphone. When I set up Her radio, it will have a ceramic mic on it. Thanks for watching, 73's from 151 SC.

thanks for the test I always wondered what the difference in range was. the tram is just given er haha but I know your 102 is no slouch either. and I agree with 268 the second accident with the clarifier is suspicious 🤔🐿

Thanks for the comment Mark, this one gave Me a good laugh! But she did sound cute when off frequency. No, Sadly the DX has been very quiet lately. I did get a little bit of Texas the other day though. So I'm hopeful it will be back soon. Take care, and thanks for watching. 73's from 151 and 268 SC.
Cool video! You can't beat SSB. I don't know if you have any export CB radios put back that have FM but I like to play around with FM too. I recently installed a Stryker SR-94 HPC that is AM and FM in the truck and it was a good investment. I was able to mount it into the dash under the car radio and it came out looking sharp.
I don't have an FM radio yet, But I do want to get one someday, Just to be able to check them out. Those Stryker radios are some good talking CB's, and an in dash install is fantastic! Thanks for watching, 73's from 151 SC.
@@MowerJunkie I've always ran export radios and the prices have continued to drop. The older radios you have actually have better receive than most of the newer radios today have because they don't skimp on the IF filters. I run an Eagle Tomahawk base that was considered to be a bottom of the line radio that I purchased from Copper years ago that cost me every bit if $150.00 but up until I retired I worked in electronics and communication so I took the radio and did a lot of upgrades to it and I turned an ugly duckling into a golden "cheap" goose. My Imax 2000 has started to go down hill from wear and time so I'm replacing it with a Sirio Tornado 27 5/8 wave antenna that should be here by Friday. This will be the first time in 20 years that I've ran an aluminum antenna so I'm curious how well it's going to work. I may do a video on the antenna once I get it set up.
@@flash001USA That's awesome! I think the Eagle Tomahawk is a very cool radio. That would be great to see a video of Your new antenna, I've heard that the aluminum antennas have a much quieter receive. Good luck with the install, I hope it gives You a perfect SWR reading right from the start.

12 waits is not stock 4 is
4 watts is stock on AM, 12 Watts is stock on SSB. thanks for watching, Take care.

Very nice!
Great range test as always but please please get that windscreen replaced.
73's from England.
I'm sure the windshield will get fixed someday, But a new one comes with a price tag that won't fit into My budget. Thanks for watching, 73's from 151 SC.
What about an Long Wire End Fed tuned for 26.695Mhz to 27.405Mhz should give you more range.
Bravo
No surprises that SSB travels farther than AM. Half the AM power is wasted in the carrier. However, I was surprised that SSB was clearer than AM when within range or that the clarifier control made any difference on AM. Must be the way the radios are designed.
I was a little surprised too, on both radios She sounded better on SSB. Thanks for watching, 73's from 151 SC.
I have said it all along, SSB is clearer and a bit more range. It is also a lot clearer, however, it might not be something you want to use if driving as you need to use the clarifier and this takes attention away from what you should be doing and that is driving. Had to laugh when Mrs Mower Junkie talked Chipmunk lol.
When im SSB mobile i tell the other op to tune to me because im driving. Some will and some will get mad, oh well..
@@ericzerkle5214 Yes, tried that, same as when home base, "Everyone tune into one person and no one needs to shift the clarifier again. But you always get someone that will not do it.
It depends on the radio. I usually never touch the clarifier in My car, I did this time only to try to make her sound better on AM. But Barbara did sound cute when She was off frequency. Thanks for watching, 73's from 151 SC.
@@MowerJunkie It's fine if you are static like you were but SSB is just another distraction when driving. However, having said that, I always make driving my priority anyway, always did and CB came second. Sometimes the other breaker had to wait for a reply as I was busy in traffic, they got used to that very quickly after i say I was in heavy traffic needing all my attention, most good breakers would just wait for a reply, which was never long anyway. CB has sort of died in this country, Covid has given it a bit of a boost, but it went very quiet end of the 80's, we are of FM here, now allowed SSB/AM/FM/Phase modulation/CW. All on the American frequencies like we used to be on before it became legal. I think AM is easier on the ears when driving and between contacts, but SSB is a lot better to use. FM is simpler, but very hard on the ears, though with a good signal can be very clear compared to AM. We need to generate more interest in CB again, it is sort of dead around where I am, the odd trucker, the odd DXer and a couple using Amateur Radio equipment with high power, but only on when skip is running or a DX Net is around. Big antennas, loads of power. There is no need for high power, not the power these guys are using anyway!
Mobile to mobile barefoot? On sideband what is a normal estimation for range with your extensive knowledge?
with a 12 watt SSB radio, and a good mobile antenna you should get 5-10 mile range.
