The one thing you should do is move across the bridges or tunnels to Alameda Island. It’s like crossing over from East Berlin to West Berlin !

Was just in town for an interview, man this is a true statement lol. Could not believe the difference that half mile or so made. Night and day, and living costs are very similar.

How has Oakland changed since you’ve lived there. And has it changed for the better? Ie: is it safer, more gentrification, more amenities etc?

Hi @Brian N! when I first moved here in 2010, I was a teacher in Oakland, and my colleagues and I rented a 4-bed, 2-bath home in Trestle Glen (by Lake Merritt) for under $3000. That was after the last economic recession, and before tech had started to move their offices into SF (and before folks working in the city saw Oakland as an attractive spot to live). That same house likely rents for $6500+ today in 2021! So, for one, home prices and rents have climbed to SF prices (in some areas), and the gap between the haves and have nots has widened. While there have been some improvements in our infrastructure (repaving roads, creating much needed bike lanes in the downtown areas), the city has not done as much as they can with their new revenue (from transfer taxes, development impact fees, special measures, etc), especially when it comes to addressing the houseless and the growing encampments. The encampments have gotten worse during the pandemic, and the city pushes them to specific areas of Oakland closer to the I-880. In terms of amenities, absolutely there was a boom in locally owned restaurants, bars, etc, during the past decade. Of course many small businesses struggled and continue to struggle during the pandemic. In terms of crime, while I encourage everyone to do their own due diligence, city-data.com showed the crime index of Oakland to have gone down between 2012 and 2019, but media reports in 2021 have revealed more frequent incidents of violent crime/gun violence. And if you compare Oakland's crime rate (in general) to nearby East Bay cities like Alameda, it is much higher. Oakland is HUGE geographically, so frequency and type of crime varies greatly by neighborhood, sometimes block. People in the Bay still consider Oakland one of the more affordable, accepting (of U.S. "subcultures") and diverse cities in the Bay. I cannot say that the housing supply issue, the infrastructure, nor the educational system have gotten better over the last 10-11 years.

Oakland is not dangerous if your neighbor gets shot. It is dangerous if you get shot.

Sure thing! Here is city-data.com - www.city-data.com/city/Oakland-California.html Unfortunately, crime data stops at 2019. Not sure why. Hey Katie , I'm coming in may / june to Oakland, CA for my master's from Lincoln University....suggest me a best and affordable part or region for rent ....

Since the University is in downtown, I would suggest trying to look for spaces near the BART line. Are you looking for a room in a shared house or a studio apartment? Rents are GENERALLY cheaper the further and deeper east you go (Eastmont, Hegenberger, etc), but it's difficult to find a 1-bedroom in the North/West Oakland under $1,700 per month. It would be cheaper (and more conveniently located) to find one or two other folks enrolling to share a 2 to 3-bedroom home. From where are you moving?

Oakland is huge and there are plenty of great areas. Pointing out 1 street means absolutely nothing.

You left out a whole bunch of stuff...I take it you weren't born and raised there.

@rickarroyo2 😀no, I was raised in Louisiana, which I mention in several videos. I've lived here for over 11 years, and I've watched the city change drastically in many ways. This was "x" things you should know about Oakland, and YES, I have many more things to say in other videos. What would you like to share about Oakland since I take it you were born and raised here? Thanks for watching.
