  • We've talked a lot about how food has changed our lives and ultimately led us to this homesteading life. But, another important part of our journey has been how our mindset around exercise, movement and health has changed. In this video we share the changes we've made and the difference it has made in how we feel!

    My testimony: When I was a teenager, I read It is healthier to use the staircase instead of the elevator. I live in a Spanish town full of apartament and Office blocks, hardly any individual House units... I am 65 and still routinely and easily go up and down 10 floors on the staircase. ALSO I always knew refined sugar IS bad for my health, but I would routinely give in and have sweet snacks and desserts... and I just discivered I have high colesterol. So, It pays to do what we know to be good for us!

    I really liked this conversation and it’s given me lot to think about for how I can incorporate more movement into my lifestyle. At age 64 I need this. Move it or lose it.. it’s true!

    That was an amazing video, makes so much sense.. Since I have done stretching, work and gardening chores became so much easier.

    Jim, can you share your stretch routine? The adults in this house have back pain!

    • @FromScratchFarmstead
      @FromScratchFarmstead  Рік тому +1

      So the stretch that most helped my back was the first one I do in the video where you basically pull your knees up and hug them. If you hug hard and draw your head up as well it really helps decompress your spine. That's the one that really seemed to have the biggest impact with relieving my back pain when it was there. Now I just continue doing it because it feels good. It may honestly be worth trying to find a more holistically minded Chiropractor, like Joelle's sister, and going for a visit. They'd be able to really pinpoint what the issues actually are and recommend stretches or strength training to help. And not necessarily like lifting weights at the gym but more movement based daily routines that help strengthen your back over time. I always come away amazed how much she is able to determine from a simple adjustment/exam and how helpful the recommendations are for relieving whatever pain I'm having. Just some thoughts!

    I was reading a book and they call it "active sedentary" when you work out for like those 30+ mins but sit for the rest of the day. Love this content and have been super inspired by you all!!! Definitely have been feeling like I get lot of movement in when I tend to homemaking things!! My friends mom calls it the "cinderella workout" 😅

    You hear so many women complain about every stage of pregnancy it’s almost like you feel the need to hold back when talking about feeling good. I feel that way when I tell others about my pregnancies and births. I am a homesteader and baby-wear all of mine until they are about 2.5. They learn so much going along with mom or dad with daily chores.

    This came at such perfect timing! Love your perspective and absolutely agree. It's so easy to learn into convenience and comfort but it's most often the opposite of those things that is best for us. This gives me a lot of great ideas and I love the thought provoking questions and topics. Great video!!

    This was helpful, thanks! I definitely want to strengthen my back, I tried baby wearing and could only last 20-30 minutes. Lifestyle working out seems more attainable than a set workout schedule.

    Good reminder. Another resource .. a book/podcst/blog by Peter Attila. His idea is similar to what you mentioned --- thinking about what you want to do when you are older, and train for it now. He has the concept of training for the Centenarian Olympics.- training in what you want to do when you are older to stop the body's natural decline. Everyone defines their own "events". E.g. you want to travel when you are 100 -- you might train to be able to keep lifting weight over your head, so that you can get the luggage into the overhead bin.

    I don't know then because I have some pretty muscular farm legs and thick hips, and could definitely save a couple of people swimming. Im chubby, but I'm a really good swimmer. I don't really eat a lot of processed foods ever. I went to a nutritional class a few times because I wanted to lose weight and the things the people told us to eat in that class made me want to throw up. They were all eating processed frozen foods; it was disgusting. At this point I'm ready to just tell me drs I have some pretty bad hormonal issues and need help to become thin and it wouldn't be unusual because they run in my family. I have to take birth control every day as well to not bleed to death, and it's basically poison. It makes me very sick. Thank you for spreading the information. I think food in America is just filled with chemicals as well. It's all just cancer inducing food.

      I'm on a healing journey similar to yours. Endometriosis with adenomyosis had me on hormonal birth controls of all sorts that helped somewhat but caused other problems- like excessive weight gain that is hard to lose.
      Cutting out all carbs GREATLY helped me. Mostly- No white stuff- flour, sugar, rice, potatoes. I don't use seed oils either, and finally saw the pain dissipate-
      🙏🏼 power to you. i know it's not easy.
