As long as you’re riding and keep the rubber side down, what cares about being poor😂😂. I don’t have the money for a new Dyna Wide Glide, but it’d be a lot cooler if I did😂
If you can kick start it you can ride it.Cheyleesi, check out Red Rider (similar sized girl)who rides a similar looking shovel.Ride it as is before you chop it and no mag if you want a user friendly bike.
A Shovelhead owners' best friend -- lots of Loctite. Chey, be prepared to turn wrenches. Man, what a great deal you got on that bike! Stretch the downtubes - no rake. If you decide to install a springer front end, go with a quality fork (Paughco, Moto Iron, et al). I wouldn't go crazy-long with the fork (possibly 4" overstock). A front brake is always a good idea. I've owned 3 Shovelheads and one Pan/Shovel hybrid. All of them were choppers and kick start only. Good luck, Chey. Hi'ya Josh.
You're not dumb Chey. It seems like you're interested in building your bike, learning while actually doing the work is the best way to learn. Josh seems he is always willing to give you guidance as you go. Looking forward to seeing the progress as you go. GOOD LUCK, AND ENJOY THE BUILD!!
My grandson and his school is restoring my 72 and Shadetree is right about being launched over the handle bars and screws in my anckle. I rode mine everywhere and every base I was stationed including Kodiak Alaska. From 74 - 2019. Your gonna love the shovelhead. Take care of your wrist and make it stronger than before. Be safe
Oh, wow, the look on your face when you managed to kickstart the shovel..priceless... This project will be awsome. but go slowly and try to make a plan for the whole process before you getting to deep into cutting and gutting😁. Big thanks Chey!!
So looking forward to the videos about this bike ! I got 3 shovelheads, all 3 are close to stock, matching numbers, original paint. All 3 are Twin belt models (2 Sturgis and a Willie G special wide glide)
Chey, looks like you found a great donor for a build. A hardtail suicide build might be a bit much for your first chopper. I suggest you find one to ride before you make a BIG MISTAKE. If you want something to ride, you might want to think about this. If you want something to look at, go for it. I have to admit, my 56 Suicide Pan was sweet and way too cool for school baby. I loved riding her. She was my favorite screw. Riding a bike like that is great for a badass but, you better make sure you know what you are doing.
I had a friend who had a 72 FLH Shovelhead for many years. He loved it, but he had no mechanical skills, so I lost track of the number of times I had to re-tighten, re-attach, repair bits of it which had shaken themselves loose or broken because of the vibration (which was far worse even than my Triumph Bonneville), and years of abuse/neglect by previous owners. You will definitely have the opportunity to hone your engineering skills trying to keep that motor in one piece. Good luck with it!
"i want to create a problem" you got a shovelhead...mission accomplished lol. really though i am happy to see you building a chopper. myself i would keep the rear suspension just so my a$$ and back stayed in one piece lol, but thats me. coffin tanks look cool on choppers i think. easier to make yourself too. it would be cool if you formed and welded your own gas tank. i must say i am already trying to guess in my head what it will look like. i like the look you and Josh was talking about too, stretched but not raked. good vid and grats on the new to you bike
It took some time for me to get used to a foot clutch, but that's just me. I'm looking forward to watching Chey's bike being built to her fortition and her back up on two wheels!
Best of luck with the shovelhead! I bought an Ironhead as my first real bike to rebuild and learn about back to front, same as you’re doing with the shovelhead. I wish you all the patience in the world! Can’t wait to see the finished chopper!
years back i had the Ls650 n XL1200Custom, love to ride my 650 more then the Harley up graded to the Streetbob, at 60 had to give it up to my son but now looking into getting the S40 650 again this summer, love your vids dave from Texas
I didn’t read through the comments but, being a nurse and survivor of accident causing broken pelvis which left me with considerable lower back pain, I’m worried for you riding a hardtail. I totally support your quest for mechanical knowledge.
Is that an actual Harley tombstone speedo? I know they go for quite a bit these days. I have my dad's old Pan and I have had people at bike meets offer me, like, $500 just for the Speedo or the original carb cover lol. Sweet Shovel, can't wait to see what you do with it.
Boy I was lucky!! I was riding them in the 60s and would have to think about how many I owned! One of my favorites was my 57 Pan Shovel. She did get a great deal on that Shovel. I should mention too the CH's we built! The good old days!!!!
OK, I didn't read ALL of the comments, but I scanned through and I can't believe that I didn't see anyone say "U is for ukulele!'. Great stuff, enjoy the bike and heal up quick!
Slight adjustment, FL is a designator for fat wheel and forks so all touring+heritage/deuce deluxe and so on Then FX is a skinnier front end being sportsters, choppers, and then almost softail sand dynas
My first Shadetree video was the 1200 miles on a chopper, Im so excited to see how you build and put your own mark on this build. Kick starting also fun...... I think I want a shovelhead now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Can't wait to see this progress! Nobody learns something until they learn it. I am UA-cam certified in the things I've had to self teach.. although someone is teaching me on the tube... anyways, cheering for ya!
I am really excited about this chopper build I want to know what shade of pink (Pink is my favorite color) are you going to have Ballet, hot or Rose? I think you are going to do a great job!
Left foot on left peg, stand straight up to keep balance and kick down Left knee on seat your weight is all in the right side that’s why it was gonna tip on you Def easier straddling
For $3,000?????!!!!!!!!!!! DEFINITELY stole this Shovelhead!!!!!! Great job finding this bike for that cheap!!! I bought my 1st Harley, a 1976 Harley FXE, when I was 18 years old at $3,500 and I’m 52 years old now!!! By the time I turned 28 years old I got tired of fixing the old Shovelhead and bought a new 1999 FLH Standard and a couple of years ago I picked up a 2001 Road King for a good price but I still got my old Shovelhead and will NEVER sell it!!! Have a great time with it!!! Great job getting that bike!!!!!
Hell yeah…a cone shovel Superglide …recommend getting a 21 front wheel.. I have a chrome super e cover for the carburetor..bet that motor is a strocker..late model shovelheads are pretty reliable
Josh. You could guide her on the journey of turning her shovel into a pan. Find a pan right-side case, pan cylinders, heads, etc etc. Would make some good content swap meetin stuff
you really dont have to do much cutting, streach downtubes 2" and add just enough in the backbone to fill gap. that frame is strong the way it is. That will put you at 6 to 8 over for the front end. you might also consider primary offset kit. and wider swing arm and tire.
As long as you have an everyday bike you could put aside money and build a panhead brand new. You can get a motor from S&S nice smooth belt drive primary nice smooth belt final drive. The frame sheet metal instruments the ones that you want not what the factory gives you. In a couple of 3 years of saving and buying stuff as it comes along you can have one. Good luck with your bike and don't crash
FXE = super glide electric start . I’ve got a 79. You will learn to work on it if you want to ride it 😂. Looks like a real good deal with all the extras , I would guess the motor is a stroker with all the mods that Josh pointed out . Someone definitely spent some money on that one .lucky you 😎
MANIFESTS! Come on Chey, Josh grabbed the pipe, lol. But good catching the downside of that. The internet can be scary and you definitely need to be careful. Best wishes on the upcoming build.
Congrats finding a running platform to start the project....since it's an FXE (and you're planning to go pink.) FOXY could be a good potential name to put in the hat.
4 plug heads on a shovel, Hmmm I would like to see more of that. I have twin plug heads on mine which is a total of 4 spark plugs but to have 4 plugs per head that would be some pretty wild mods, your boyfriend must really know his bikes and FXE the X being for Sportster front end that's the first time I've heard that one.
Makes me excited to finish re-rebuilding my dad's shovelhead chopper. Foot clutch, hand shift behind your butt, no front brake, raked out front end, hardtail, this wicked king/queen seat, and the only gauge on it is oil pressure on the case... The one time we rode it out in Sturgis, I paced my dad on my Bolt, and he was doing 80 on the interstate, and it had room to go beyond that. We have to go through the transmission, it doesn't like to stay in third gear, and it started spitting oil out of the front cylinder after the distributor turned in the middle of a poker run. If I can kick it, my plan is to take it on a poker run sometime this year, despite 100+ miles on a suicide shift chopper sounding like a giant death wish.
A real chopper is VERY EASY to just ride away. And you are putting a magneto on it. Which makes grabbing EXTREMELY EASY First thing I learned to hot wire was a 1950s Pan. You wouldn't even know it wasn't mine when I started it. BTW big twins are a lot more friendly to kick start then sporties.
check out prism supply in charlotte nc for your foot clutch set up.....and since you are going rigid, look for a nice solo seat that you can put both cheeks on. and are you going mid-controls to fit your size ?? ps, keep the electric start. good wrenching.
I had a shovel for a month. That's all I could take. I want to ride. I don't to work it after I ride it. And don't even think your going to go on a trip with out problems.
Just you mentioning that you're going to hard tail it makes my back hurt. My Kz 1000 was originally built as a drag bike and had a strutted rear end and it only took one bridge expansion joint at 80 mph to convince me that I needed rear shocks. Don't get me wrong, hard tails are cool but they are hell on your lower back.
With the old leaded gas at high octane the Shovelhead was fine as they took the lead out of the gas and the octane was lowered the bike suffered. With two plugs you get much better combustion in the chamber. You get more power and you get better fuel economy due to the fact that the fuel does not go out the tailpipe. I have a setup like that on a BMW 900 class 6 1977 it makes 20% more horsepower than stock with 10% better gas mileage. I don't know why they didn't come stock from the factory this way. Delcron cases are some of the best that you can get. Sounds like somebody spent some serious money on this bike and you got a great deal whenever you pay for it. I have a hardtail bolt on on my 1965 Triumph TR6 and the bike handles like it's on Rails and is more comfortable than my Sportster with a simple sprung solo seat.
Here’s how I cope with forever being too poor to own a pan head, convincing myself that evo choppers are cooler 🤣😎
Might not be cooler but definitely more reliable.
Build whatever works for you 😉😉
I wouldn’t say cooler but I think Evo choppers have made it in their own right, seen some good ones.
Yep, mid 2000's honda cb500 chopper
As long as you’re riding and keep the rubber side down, what cares about being poor😂😂. I don’t have the money for a new Dyna Wide Glide, but it’d be a lot cooler if I did😂
When that motor kicks back she is going over the handle bars no joke
Happen to me at age 16, tore tendons in right knee. Stuck with electric start bikes after that. Still got the limp.
Looking forward to seeing the transformation from where it is, to your vision for the chopper. Cheers!
Hi'ya Josh.
Loctite and spare battery/oil tank rubber mounts 😆
Fx and FXE of that year group has a name from the factory, it is a "Superglide"
You're not dumb Chey. It seems like you're interested in building your bike, learning while actually doing the work is the best way to learn. Josh seems he is always willing to give you guidance as you go. Looking forward to seeing the progress as you go. GOOD LUCK, AND ENJOY THE BUILD!!

Congratulations and great find! Looking forward to the build
Very jealous, would love a project like that, the sound of those old Harleys is awesome
I had a friend who had a 72 FLH Shovelhead for many years. Hey Josh have her straddle the bike when kick starting. Is much easier and less tippy. That's the way I have to do it. Keep it weird you all!!
That Harley sounds so good. When you start riding it around people are going to be so impressed when they see you start it.
I love your positivity and go get em attitude. I also want to learn, I'm just starting out and learning how to ride. Go after your dreams always.
Congrats on the new bike Chey. I cant wait to see the build series
Hell Yeah , Chey.Looking forward to seeing the Chopper Build and can't wait!! 👍

you are going to have so much fun with that bike. cant wait to see up dates

Very kool start to a project, and what a helluva deal too!
Chey, great job starting your bike
4:42 I would just ride that bike the way it is. That's a good runner and it looks pretty smooth.

Cheay you never stop learning
I've got a 1973 Sportster anniversary colours coming my way eventually. Cannot wait for that day
Congrats on the Shovelhead found and the Savage/S40 Boulevard sold!
Great upgrade! Hope it works out well and the Suzuki sounds like it found a great home. Be safe
I am really excited about this chopper build I want to know what shade of pink (Pink is my favorite color) are you going to have Ballet, hot or Rose? I think you are going to do a great job!

For $3,000?????!!!!!!!!!!! DEFINITELY stole this Shovelhead!!!!!! Great job finding this bike for that cheap!!! I’m so happy for you I’ve been hunting for a shovel head for 2 years but everyone on fb thinks it’s worth 8k
Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉
Sweet deal on the Shovelhead! Delkron cases are indescribable. Good luck with the chopper build. I hope that your wrist is healing. Happy New Year 🥳
Dude you STOLE that shovelhead! Congrats!
"FX" meant "Factory Experimental"
Dude it did not mean "factory experimental" F for big twin, X for sportster front end. Or did WLA mean "wumba" something??? lol
Hell yeah…a cone shovel Superglide …recommend getting a 21 front wheel.. I have a chrome super e cover for the carburetor..bet that motor is a strocker..late model shovelheads are pretty reliable

The shovel head was the last big v twin that could really pull off the low ideal rhythm 🥔 🥔🥔
Very very cool! That’s a nice shovel. I would definitely look for a vintage split tank and a chrome S&S ntake cover but I’d be happy with the rest
Harley has a long history so there's tons to learn about the many models, we just call ours the "shovel" the "evo", too easy , great looking shovel✌
F = Overhead valve "Big Twin"
X = Narrow Tire and Sport Forks
E = Electric start
You got a dyna super glide
Awesome video and awesome content can’t wait for the next video Thank’s Chey
As long as you have an everyday bike you could put aside money and build a panhead brand new. You can get a motor from S&S nice smooth belt drive primary nice smooth belt final drive. What a killer deal. If it was up to me, I'd probably leave it the way it is. I know, that would be boring. Good luck with the build.
FXE = super glide electric start . I’ve got a 79. You will learn to work on it if you want to ride it 😂. Looks like a real good deal with all the extras , I would guess the motor is a stroker with all the mods that Josh pointed out . Someone definitely spent some money on that one .lucky you 😎
FX = skinny front tire and forks
FL = fat front tire and forks
You for sure "Stoles" it! COngrats. Should be fun project
You can make a pan shovel half Shovelhead half pan head put the pan head topping on the Shovelhead lower end and you will have a Shovelhead kind of
MANIFESTS! Come on Chey, Josh grabbed the pipe, lol. But good catching the downside of that. The internet can be scary and you definitely need to be careful. Best wishes on the upcoming build.
You did so well starting
Congrats finding a running platform to start the project....since it's an FXE (and you're planning to go pink.)
FOXY could be a good potential name to put in the hat.
I wouldnt be kneeling on the seat. And as far as the frame goes , just get a Pacho hardtail .
Congrats! You are a light and such a bright Star. Enjoy 😊
Chey, how would you like to have split rocker boxes on that shovel? Think about it, and let me know.
That impressed me that's awesome she kick started it love your purchase and Springer front ends good idea it's going to be nice congratulations
Hell ya. Looking forward to the build video's.
Totally believe in you
You got this
❤✌🏻
Good luck with the build.
I like the big gas tank. I don't like stopping.
BTW that Shovel is an awesome deal.

those case are thee top of line the best nice runing machine HAPPY TRAILS
Every expert was a beginner once, so dream big and build your pink chopper 🤙🏼
Chey is a real biker now
LOL
A real chopper is VERY EASY to just ride away.
And you are putting a magneto on it.
Which makes grabbing EXTREMELY EASY
First thing I learned to hot wire was a 1950s Pan. You wouldn't even know it wasn't mine when I started it.

Shovelheads have the most soul well done cheyleesi
check out prism supply in charlotte nc for your foot clutch set up.....and since you are going rigid, look for a nice solo seat that you can put both cheeks on. and are you going mid-controls to fit your size ?? ps, keep the electric start. good wrenching.
ShadeTree, it’s really not a Shovelhead. It’s Shovelhead “like”. Aftermarket cases, etc. Really nice bike though!
Hi Cheyleesi! Try to ride it some x00 miles before cutting 😀 May be rear end with shocks is not bad idea.
It's a nice feeling to get or see others get a good deal
I’m glad y’all learn how to do the manifest, I was starting to get nervous when you guys went to drop off the mail 😂
GODDAMMIT that's a SWEETASS looking Shovel!
The first coustom shop Harley was the FXS Lowrider from 1977 ,,.I had a 78 FXS .had her for 28 or 29 years I think the last year was 82 ??
I wish I could find a deal like "Buy a modded shovel motor and get the rest of the bike for free". Jeezez! Congrats!
You go, girl !!! Shovelheads forever !!!!
numbers are size the engine. i like 1970s electra glides full dressers.
Good lookin sled! She's gonna hate that shin-buster kick start. Vintage is cool, until it bites you back. LOL
Good luck Chey, sweet bike 🚲
Damn that would be a great S40 for someone. I almost purchased one a year or so ago. Thumpers man!
Respect for that kick!
You Got a Smokin Deal On That Shovel Chey, Just Keep the Shiny Side Up👍
I had a shovel for a month.
Nice, reminds me of my old lowrider, Way to go... Please consider staying the hell outta the woods!!!!!!👍
Congratulations on your new adventure and knowledge
Same outfit I wear for kick starting.
