I worked at a security systems company about 15 minutes from NY in north Jersey and our techs refused to go to Camden to provide these families the safety they needed because of the danger. They simply wouldn't get out of the car for the few appointments we tried to schedule. This was years ago and I hope it's gotten at least a little better....

Watch your mouth haters with the messed up comments I dare you to walk through Camden in the daytime with that attitude. You will find yourself in a situation you won’t be able to handle. I worked law enforcement ten years and now I’m a nurse and I see both sides of the coin. It’s no joke here it’s all about survival period. I walk with God daily to make it.

It's really a shame that Camden has decayed into one of the most dangerous and poor cities in the US. It was the place where the Victor Talking Machine Co. mass produced records and Victrolas. It's truly a historic city that doesn't deserve to be in this condition.

  • @MsFrosteetoes

Camden was a nice city, as one old timer once told me who grew up there like in the 1920's, said that Camden was like heaven back then. Camden was always considered less affluent than Philly even going back to the 1940's-1950's. Then the race riots of the 60's happened, white flight, and the city still hasn't fully recovered.

I just love how people make comments about the drugs and crime in Camden and how it's so bad because of the people who live there (note: sarcasm). I LIVE in the city of Camden and the reason why we have so much drug trafficking is because white people from Cherry Hill and Moorestown and other suburban areas come to the city to buy drugs. The effect caused by them buying the drugs is that people who need the cash, that the government or their minimum wage jobs can't/won't provide, start to sell. In result of THAT, you have murderers and violence because people don't want others selling on their "turf". So, don't sit here and say people want to live like this. I know PLENTY of people who are trying to get out of the city, myself included. And not all of us are "imbeciles" I for one will be graduating from a prestigious private school next year because I was able to earn a scholarship by being an intelligent resident of Camden. I sit on a bus with 15 other intelligent kids and teenagers who were born and raised in Camden and just want to get out of here.

Paul Adonia You're so far gone I don't think I should even be wasting my time on responding to this bigotry, discrimination, prejudice, and overall hate but I will out of a love for educating confused and rude people like you. I would like to preface this by saying that this idea you have of "high culture" is straight out of white suprecamist kkk ideology. I can't even believe you had the audacity to even speculate this girl was homophobic, "ghetto", and all of the other rude things you said about her . I expect you to be the racist homophobic one because you have this preconcepton of who this girl is just based on her defesive stance towards a place she calls home. Her sentences were eloquent and educated but you deemed her to be "wagging her finger" and wearing "big hoop earrings" just because she's from Camden. It's so painfully obvious that you are blind and that you have never even been to Camden. Your "fitting into the place you want to escape to" comment is absolute idiocy. No one should have to change themselves to suit the wants of other people. That's exactly what racists want people to do. Change themselves to be less black or less latino so that they can coexist with the majority. Well how about the majority learn to live with the people around them instead of being so quick to judge (as you so hatefully AND disgustedly did). I hope your twisted view of this world doesn't continue to exist in your sorry excuse for a brain because I sincerely only feel pity for you. Goodbye

It's the responsibility of the people within the community to improve and maintain the community. If the people that live there don't care enough to make an honest living and fix things up and create and environment for raising their own children then it won't happen.
If the government or some non profit came in, fixed the roads. Brought up brand new buildings and established an environment for children to grow up in. What's to keep it from going right back to where it is in 20 years? Nothing. Why is that? Nobody appreciates handouts. Only what you earn will be respected and maintained.

You should all be cognizant of the fact that this is an 11 minute video on a channel titled "TheRealStreetz.com" and as such, the individuals shown in this video are not representative of the entire community, but merely show exactly what was intended... THE STREET LIFE. While yes, politics, poverty, society norms and drugs have been a long standing issue here in Camden (as most of you suggested), contrary to popular belief Camden does a lot more than produce "uneducated animals" as someone in the comments suggested. I would know firsthand. I was born and raised in Camden and still reside here, yet, I have a Bachelor's degree and am currently in Law School pursuing my Juris Doctorate to become an attorney... so, no. We don't all "live off of the government", we aren't all "rappers", and we certainly aren't all "thugs".

I'm born and raised in Camden and 2:57 he said the truth if you can make it in Camden you can make it anywhere. I'm living proof! A lot of the comments people wouldn't understand what it is to grow up in a poverty struck environment. When companies started moving out (suburbs) along with the society that grew with it they left too. Government funds depleted in short time from schools to public outlooks. Immediately after the drugs moved in and dealers follow suit for survival and you know how the story goes from there. People move around like that to make sure everything is 100 in your surroundings isn't safe nowhere out there. Most of my friends I grew up (17 dead out of 20) with have been murdered on those streets. All I can say is focus your mind out of your situation and on a goal. Strive for it everyday no one is gonna help you unless you help yourself.

The people seem pretty cool but just nothing much going on but bad things so they either get out or get caught up. It’s sad because they seem like genuinely nice people. They need a taste of more easy living. I hope they can get something going on the internet to give them a push. Best of luck to ya!

What I don't understand is how an entire city turned so bad. In certain areas in Camden there are a billion police officers posted up, mainly near transportation center & the college area, yet there is a drug deal going down 5 feet from them & they let it happen. I don't know if the police is just turning a blind eye, being paid off,or simply just gave up.They are dealing & using drugs in plain sight. On some streets police have cameras installed on telephone poles and people selling/trading right underneath it,but nothing ever happens. I guess the police are just focusing on violent crime and think to themselves if we just manage to keep the violent crime rate down then we are doing the best we can. It's it's like a zombie apocalypse out there. I feel bad for the people who live there & have to endure this day in and day out.
