    About the lecture:
The port of Berenike on the Egyptian Red Sea Coast was an important landing site for the Indo-Mediterranean maritime trade route in the early centuries of the first millennium CE. Extensive excavations have been carried out there over the past three decades by the Universities of Delaware (USA), Leiden (The Netherlands) and Warsaw (Poland), with the co-operation of the Egyptian Ministry of State for Antiquities. The excavations have revealed, amongst other remains, a fort and city defenses, several temples and a church, texts on papyri and ostraca, textiles from China and India, and remains of ship planks, sails and ropes. In the past five years, the excavations have yielded astonishing objects of Indian influence which include Satavahana coins, the first Sanskrit inscription found in Egypt, a stela with an Indic triad representation and statues of the Buddha. The lecture will focus on the immense significance of these objects and offer a contextual analysis of the finds, situating them in the wider world of Early Historic maritime trade networks between India, Egypt and the Mediterranean World.

    Wonderful talk.
It would be much easier to follow the talk if the inset small video were of the speaker and slides fill the screen.
