The autumn sun was barely peeking over the hills of Cedar Valley when Thomas adjusted his father's old denim jacket and surveyed his modest farm. Twenty acres of hard-worked land stretched before him, dotted with the remnants of what was once a thriving cattle operation. The morning dew sparkled on sparse grass where his remaining eight cows grazed listlessly, their ribs showing through their winter coats.
Thomas ran his rough hands through his graying hair, remembering better days when his father had run this place. Back then, the barns were full, and the pastures teemed with life. But three years of drought and his wife Sarah's mounting medical bills had forced him to sell off most of their herd, piece by piece. Now, at forty-five, he felt twice his age, the weight of responsibility pressing down on his shoulders like the heavy clouds gathering on the horizon.
His eyes drifted to the small farmhouse where Sarah was probably already awake, helping their daughter Emma with her breathing exercises. The thought of Emma's determined face during her daily struggle with cystic fibrosis made his heart ache. The doctors had recommended a new treatment, one that could significantly improve her quality of life, but the cost was well beyond what their insurance would cover. Thirty thousand dollars might as well have been three million to a small farmer like him.
