Same exact strategy I used ... seed has germinated. Lawn is green. No need to pull it all out to bare soil. Nice job.
The Lawn Whisperer i know it’s actually September 22nd but I couldn’t wait either. I started the lowering to scalp of my grass 2 weeks ago. The next mow will be on the lowest setting “G” on my 30 ‘ TimeMaster! If it kills my Bermuda not big deal, I’m over-seeding in the Spring with another warm season grass anyways. Do you recommend using a light layer of peat moss after putting down the seed?
Just scalped my yard, 21st of August, I detach over seeded and fertilized! I also threw thin layer of potting soil kept the ground wet by watering 2-3 times a day now 1-2 times and my yard looks amazing!!!!!!!! I believe early fall is the best time to do it.
Greatest random ending clip I’ve seen. No explanation, no introduction. Just a man blowing in a dirty trailer.
I'm now at the leveling step. Bought the Sunjoe, and it was worth every penny. That thing is a beast.
I enjoy the easy to digest information and funny innuendos. I like watching you as you seem like a good dude. Keep up the excellent work.
Specifically for this video, thanks, this helps as well as some comments confirming the approach. Someone had made a comment to me to 'scalp' as much as possible on thelawnforum.com. It's very challenging to get everything, I'm glad I don't have to.
I tested pulling up the dead grass using the SunJoe to power rake first, but quickly realized it is easier to lawnmower scalp first, then go back with the SunJoe. I found using the power rake on the lower settings pulled up more for me than the scarifier. I used the bag, which I know doesn't work for some, but it reduced the clean up needed afterward with bagging through the lawn more. The only issue was I had to clear the SunJoe bag after about power raking about 10 square feet. I also went back with the string trimmer to reduce the height of the dead grass in a few spots, I feel like the lowest setting on my lawnmower is 3/4 inch, I never measured it.
I'm not sure how long after doing the work you post your videos. I'm guessing you may be partly already through your leveling. Which would put us close to on the same timeline. Curious to see if you try to make another drag, like in your 'Leveling a Bumpy Lawn' vid. I just finished leveling with topsoil and just a leveling rake, going to try to let it fallow, but feeling tight on time. I'm going to predominantly seed with a Ryegrass vs KGB which should mean I don't need as much time. I kept the leveling basic, limited to a few of the biggest spots. The soil suppliers wanted to deliver a minimum of 6 cubic yards, which would give me an inch of coverage on the 2000 sq/ft I am renovating. It felt like too much and they were a little shifty in discussing the screening of the soil. I have also rationalized that would complete a more full leveling but topsoil will move and decompose over time anyways, so why try too hard at this stage. I will leave leveling to frequent light sandings.
Used that SunJoe to dethatch st. augustine. Saw a fantastic result. Thin out all the dead crap. 10 days later, the lawn was looking amazing. Been strong all summer long.
Just did the same thing with front yard. From scalping I got 8 50 gallon bags full of grass. Saturday is dethatch day. Got the sunjoe too. Amazing tool. Will be seeding with SS1000 tall fescue blend around mid sept. Still way too hot yet for me to seed
I did something similar. Total killed my small front yard, a little of my back yard. I had a fungus bad is the reason. Gray leaf spot, and brown patch per Purdue laboratory. ( Only about $12 if Indiana resident). I went half on a power by rake from Home Depot, then aerated, then bought a Sun Joe, and used a Groundskeeper 2 rake around the edges. I planted tall fescue from Seedsuperstore, SS1000. I bought a 25lb bag. I all ready sowed my front lawn, and it's just starting to pop up, after only 6 days. I'm doing my lawn in stages, so much at a time. I have 10,000 sq ft, I too damn old, or lazy, to do at one time. Good luck with your lawn, looking good. Thanks for by the tips.
Taking a lot of dumps in one day. Look forward to the seeding!
Dude those sun joes are a beast. I got mine last weekend and it worked like a champ
Scalp stripes on point.
I’ll say it. Missed opportunity for an epic burn pile!
Also, I got myself a gorilla cart for my birthday recently, amazing.
When that music hit @ 0:18, I thought a tow truck was gonna come outta nowhere.
How low are you scalping with the mower? I did 1.5” tonight on 12k sq ft with the rider, wind rowed it then collected. So much grass!! I think I’m going to bring in some good top soil to spread and help smooth it out and fill in the settled areas. Not too concerned if it’s absolutely level. Just want it smooth. After that spread some seed. Bad idea?
Whoa! That is a lot of work. I can’t wait to see how awesome it will look👍🌱👍
Shaving the pink.. lawn down! 👍🏻😁
This is about the third time I've watched your Renovation series. Your have officially got me on board to try out your method on my side yard. Have KBG mix, but want to get something I can go under an inch. I really want that short turf athlete field look. I'm in Chicagoland with similar climate as you in Indy. When do you recommend to apply the first round glyco to kill the grass?
Man it's coming together nice job
i got the earthwise, works like a champ
Also, someone in the LCN Facebook group suggested propping the trap door of the sun joe open just an inch or so and it apparently rolls and discharges much easier.
I can't wait to see your hard work pay off.
That is a lot of dead grass! Whoa! That so crazy. I knew you had thick lawn but dannnnnngggggg! hahaha!
First Aussie 😁. A man on a mission. 😎👍👍
I read that plate and noticed the IN career FF plate. Where you on the job at? I’m in Kuwait on deployment currently but work in Indy for Wayne. Great content by the way!
Oh the clearing up.. if only we didn't have to 🤣
That nice golden brown lawn! Its going to be a nice green here soon!
First thing came to my mind when I saw a cut to the backyard......whatever Bermuda grass the esther may have missed, the glyphosate got it...🤣🤣🤣
I must have missed that you were burning down the front too! Making my popcorn!
My allergies made my eyes itch just watching this video!
Not first but got a behind the scenes look at where you take a dump.
I'm at the same stage as you. I'm trying to kill a whole yard of Bermuda grass I hate this crap I don't know why anybody would want it. It's so rooted in and hard to get up I've already tilled it. I bagged a lot of it and used a Lawn Sweeper I'm about to use a power rate tomorrow I have some areas in the front that I need to try and scrape up this should be my last pass. Then I will aerate and poke holes so some of the seeds can go down hopefully unless u don't think that is a good idea? Nice vid!
What was the reason you killed everything off? Was it just to level or another reason?
Where did you take your dumps??? Looked very secluded.
My lawn is 100% crab grass. After I kill it, do I need to scalp THAT all the way to the dirt? Or pull it all? (Please say no)
I have a question, do you spray any bio's down to keep the dirt in a descent shape and to prep the soil for seeding all while going through the process of killing your existing grass ? I want to get a jump start with some RGS and Humic. Should I wait to put that down when I'm ready to seed, or can I put it down now while waiting for the glyphosate to fully kill everything? I sprayed another round yesterday, but am eager to get something good for the soil down.
Hello, I'm new to this channel. I have huge weed issues which I'm thinking about killing the lawn and starting all over. How long after I kill the lawn can I start seeding?
I’m still trying to kill my lawn. 2 apps in lol.
So are you going to water after you level to encourage growth before spraying?
Not first but so excited for this!
I killed my grass last week, I’m applying application of weed killer today. Once it’s all dead I’ll go over it and scalp it and have my bagger pick up the debris. Can I just aerate afterwards and seed? Or should I skip aeration and use a dethatcher and top dress with compost?
Fire is a good means to getting rid of that old stuff.
Dethatch rake is great for pulling pine needles out of turf. Would not use it for seed prep. I’m way to lazy fo dat.
Are you the neighbour of ryan knorr? Looks like the same yard😜😂😂
Wouldn't it have been much easier to scalp the lawn down to an inch or preferably less, then Glyphosate it all, then scarify it?...you'd have much less dead grass to "dump".
Doesn’t Glypho work by absorption through the blades. If you scalp first, will the plant absorb as much chemical to kill it down to its roots?
Where's the after video after seeded?
Drum Beats!
Why is this grass dead? The owner put herbicide on it?
Wondering if anybody has ever tried to used all the dead stuff that gets picked up when scalping as a top dressing for seeding. It resembles straw so im thinking it may work.
Even when dead it stripes up.
You should have lit all the dead grass you pulled out on fire. That would have made for a great ending scene.
I actually tried but there was enough dirt in with it that it wouldnt stay lit 😂
@@TheLawnWhisperer I hear a little boy scout juice helps get and keep things lit. 😂Connor knows.
What.......no controlled burn of the grass?
put your camera in manual focus once you have it focused so it doesnt go in and out
Looks like rake worked better than blower... better to pull out than blow it everywhere. Didn't sound right
What height did you scalp at?
Did you rent the Power Rake from Home Depot?
The Lawn Whisperer Bummer. What area? I’ll see what I can do. I would love to see some of your instructional vids featuring some HD rental tools.
@@gtjman1 if you could have a home depot built in Bloomington, Indiana I'll be a very happy guy Haha
The Lawn Whisperer Wow! No kidding. You are nestled kind of right in between Indy and Louisville. Those would be the markets that HD would likely want to stay closer to. I bet that’d be a tough sell. I’m on the buying team for HD Rentals. So I just love when we see our stuff in these UA-cam videos.
@@gtjman1 yeah I think a home depot on the east side of bloomington would make a killing but I know nothing haha
The music was good sounded like 80s
OH-MY...😳
Why not take a string trimmer and buzz it all off?
I bet you were picking grass out of your ears and nose for a week.... A lotta work!
Why are you scalping in the summer? Why not just throw a lit cigarette!
Dude, next time save yourself all that scalping hassle. For less than $100 buy yourself something like a Sun Joe electric tiller and get the property prepared for seed in a fraction of the time.
@@SLickev92 Weeds are not a problem when you pretreat the tilled soil with Tenacity. Worked like a charm when I put in a new lawn from seed last fall.
@@SLickev92 I respect "The Lawn Whisperer" and implement much of his advice for my lawn upkeep. I'm just saying if you're looking for an alternative for a less intensive time and effort lawn restoration method from scratch -- skip the Roundup, raking of clippings and trips to the dump with those clippings. And, wait for temperatures not in the 90s; do a low cut mow; low impact rototill; light level raking; apply Tenacity; put your seed down; application of starter fertilizer; lightly cover with peat moss; regular watering. My prep methods took less than two days with great end results. Your mileage may vary depending on lawn square footage, etc. Cheers.
William Workinger that’s a great method as well ! I already scorched my lawn , I plan on just dethatching as well as leveling the lawn with top soil/ compost. Scuff up the surface and put seed down and tenacity ( make sure to roll the seed in ). Last time I tilled a previous Reno and got 15 percent weeds coming up because I missed the tenacity step. Lesson learned, the results were still worth while though!
First
is dethatching/power raking my dead lawn something I should do when trying to get rid of my lawn and replace it with rock/cement pavers? Or should I just dig out the entire lawn before proceeding. any advice appreciated.
