Perhaps unpopular opinion, but I feel the models rework that went along her joining the hololive branch helped a lot. I always felt the old model to be hard to approach. Of course us getting to see her in a more relaxed setting just her doing her thing is helping a ton as well.

The milestone streams are always fun and it's so cute seeing their reactions when it happens but I always wonder - Where were all those people in the first place? Is there a subset of viewers who wait patiently for a milestone stream before subscribing? Is it an algorithm thing? Are there people who watch AZKi but always forget to subscribe? I guess there are plenty of "casual" or new Hololive fans too so maybe that's part of it?
For one thing, it's a singing stream, putting one of her main talents to use. Secondly, milestone streams are one of the only times a talent puts their subs front and center, so as you say, a lot of people realize they hadn't subscribed yet and go do so.
A very significant percentage of viewers to Hololive streams are not subscribers. A much higher percentage than one would expect. These occasional reminders about it get the word out to others to watch the stream, and seem like as good a time to subscribe as any :) AZKi having a great 2023, so it seems like a lot of people felt that way.
Also a lot of listeners are caught up by the 'endurance' (耐久) word. Some register out of kindness or feel like that is enough reason to finally register, some check it out of curiosity and might feel like supporting as result.
