- THIRSK North Yorkshire | The Ultimate Walking Tour. Thirsk is a historic market town between the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors, famous for being the home of James Herriot (of all Creatures Great And Small fame). We take a look around Thirsk from the market square clock tower to the James Herriot museum.
Thirsk is about 320km north of London, 230km south of Edinburgh and 35km north west of York. Known for its cobbled streets, bustling market atmosphere, and rich literary connections, Thirsk offers a delightful blend of history, culture, and outdoor activities.
Thirsk boasts a long and fascinating history, evident in its architectural heritage. The town centre features well-preserved Georgian buildings, a market square dating back to the 12th century, and the prominent 15th-century Thirsk Clock Tower, a local landmark.
Thirsk is perhaps most renowned for its association with the renowned veterinary surgeon and author, James Alfred Wight, who wrote under the pen name James Herriot. Herriot's best-selling series, "All Creatures Great and Small," chronicles the humorous and heartwarming tales of a country vet in the fictional town of Darrowby. This fictional town was largely inspired by Thirsk itself, attracting fans of the series to visit the town and experience the locations depicted in the books.
Things to Do in Thirsk:
The World of James Herriot: This interactive museum allows visitors to step into the world of James Herriot's books and explore the life and work of a country vet.
Thirsk Market: Held every Monday, this traditional market is a vibrant hub for local producers selling fresh produce, crafts, and regional specialties.
Thirsk Birds of Prey Centre: This centre provides opportunities to witness a variety of birds of prey in flight and learn about their importance in the ecosystem.
Sutton Bank National Park Centre: Situated a short distance from Thirsk, this center offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside and serves as a gateway to exploring the North York Moors National Park.
Thirsk Racecourse: This historic racecourse, established in 1770, hosts regular flat horse racing meetings throughout the year.
Thirsk is a captivating town that promises a memorable experience for visitors seeking a taste of English history, culture, and the charm of a traditional market town.

🇬🇧👋👋🇬🇧
Thanks so much - really appreciated!
Wow , just watched this . Its a large town . I loved the Harriet series .he did say it was a novel with actual like events .
Tv gave the illusion this was a very small yown .it doesn't look that way .
Thankyou enjoyed the walk .
Thanks so much - more to come on the channel!
The earlier Herriot series was filmed in other Yorkshire towns such as Askrigg in Wensleydale. That is a smaller and, arguably, more picturesque place than Thirsk.
@@phoebenewton4883 Thankyou , I liked it all , and the Town of Thirsk .
Going to Thirsk tomorrow! Thanks for the preview!
Hope you enjoy it!
Very well done. I never met Dr. Wight, but did talk to him 8n the early 90's by phone from Sanford florida. I have all his books and he sent me autograph plates to insert in them. A lovely man, gone to soon.😢
I am going to Thirsk in October. What a great video! Showed me a lot of things I'd not seen before as well as some lodging, parking, and shopping! Love your videos!❤
Thanks so much
I was there in 2013. Didn't realize how long a walk it was from the train station, along the race course. Having read all the Herriot books, that's where I was headed. It was quite an experience for me, a Canadian, being in the place where my mind had been having experienced the books.
Hi Neal great video
Hey, thanks!
Will have a visit when I’m on holiday in June,a big Land Rover fan so going to twisted performance in thirst.Another great video, well done.
Thank you!
Enjoy your trip!
You should start a scrap book & collect postcards from every place you visited & write something about it
not a bad idea! I've got something similar on Google Maps
Was there last year for my first visit to Yorkshire. Went to the James Herriot Experience and loved it. We were there on market day so it was very busy. St Mary's church was where Alf Wright (James Herriot) was married.
Have you been to Richmond north Yorkshire, it has a old castle, a river, it's known as a military town, with Cattrick garrison near by at cattrick
A vary good & intresting video of THIRSK North Yorkshire | The Ultimate Walking Tour✔✔✔✔
Thank you
Another great video Neil of a lovely town it’s been a while since I was there will have to visit again soon
Thank you mate have a top top week 👍👍❤️
Lovely video. Was in Thirsk (and all over Yorkshire) last August in the way to the IoM. My two regrets; not enough time to spend there and in that charity shop on the corner by Finkle street, I seen two lovely old chairs that I'd loved to have bought but the shop was closed on that day and as we were sleeping in the van sometimes, space may have been an issue 👍
A nice ancient town, thanks for the trip - I liked your joke about iced fingers 😂😂 And just how many ancient towns have a road called 'Finkle' ? What on earth is a Finkle 😅
LOVE Iced Fingers (not mine though!)
I have only seen the name Finkle in northern towns. Elsewhere on the Internet I read that "The Danish language, along with the Old Norse tongue, contained words such as finkle or vincle which implied a corner, bend or angle, particularly one in a narrow, winding street. The word can also mean crooked as in bent, or a short winding street."
Have you been to " Helmsley North Yorkshire , also just outside of Helmsley is " Eden camp " was used in the ww2.
Isn't Eden Camp nearer to Malton?
Thirsk is a cute little market town HOWEVER, take heed to the fact that no matter what time or day you visit you will likely be stuck in traffic congestion on the main road that slices its way through the town itself. Also, there isn't that much to do in Thirsk. You can probably get round all the shops in a couple of hours and it's always full of motorbikers and tourists.
That aside, it's a very picturesque and friendly-ish town.
I would recommend Bianco's Italian restaurant. The staff and food are amazing.
Actually this is so true - I got stuck in traffic too!
Normally when you see a blue plaque, it means that somebody famous as been in the courthouse.🏴
Oh crikey!
What's gud about UK is weather..always raining and windy..which keeps sand on road intact..and dont let the city to get dirty..
❤👍👍👍
The town’s name sounds like it could’ve been coined by Popeye the Sailor-“I’m Thirsk-y”.🇺🇸
🤣🤣
Top tip never go into the black bull at night
Oh no - how come?
@@GimbalWalkTV if you want a non quiet night and a quiet pint, go to the fleece, its more expensive and posh but its better than having loads of screaming and shouting from people in the bull, its rough in there to say the least, coming from a thirsk student, whos lived in thirsk all their life, don't go in there.
Easter nests. 1.20 each or a bargain 4 for 4.80. 😂
Bulk bargain 🤣
thats one of the most unappealing towns I've seen in the uk
😮😮😮😮
@@user-pq4dv6xf8u it is enlightened if you think this is an attractive town genius. Have watched years of walk vids of cities around the world too many to list, same with England but towns in the Lake district and Cornwall to name a few. Whether a town is attractive or not is subjective, just like art so talking dumb to a stranger behind a keyboard is weak
@@tombillard5264 Let's keep it friendly!
@@GimbalWalkTV Thirsk may not be the most beautiful town, but there are some fine buildings and you highlighted a few of the interesting ones. You can still visit the site of the Norman Castle, which is another bit of history, though there isn't much to see now.
Next time issue a warning before you do a close up of a Bakery!... You make people Salivate! 😋🥐🫓🥖🥯🥨
🤣 I didn't want to carry on with the walk - I wanted to head in and buy ALL the cakes
