The Qin series shares the name of the famous Chinese dynasty, but in English, it sounds more like “chin.” The first two phones are similar in looks - 2.8” screen with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels, tucked along with the keypad in a 132 x 53.8 x 8.5 mm body. There is a dual slot for micro SIM
The Qin 1s comes out with Spreadtrum chipset with two Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.3 GHz. RAM is 512MB, while storage is 4GB. Connectivity includes VoLTE, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2. It has a USB-C charger and stereo speakers (one which doubles as the earpiece) on the top and bottom of the phone.
Unique features include Xiaomi's Xiao AI digital assistant, smart language translator, and online radio stations. The phone runs on a heavily customized version of Android underneath.

I think that it’s looking pretty cool, but I would love to see the next version with aluminum unibody, front-& back camera, as well as a simple App Store...
I really like this phone! It dose have some drawbacks like the lack of third party apps and a camera. But I still think this phone is cool, it's interesting how it's like and older style candy bar phone but with a modern makeover.

Without apps, kinda hard to compete, so much isnt just calls and sms now. Kai OS' concept is exciting, but when I looked at the subreddit I didn't see good praise. It sounds like the web apps slow down, and crash from memory leaks just as you would expect them to running a firefox based engine on such low powered phones.
It's ironic in a way, web apps end up being the simplest stuff, but they're actually the type of apps that require the most resources due to how poorly optimised the DOM is.
Would it really be so bad just to resurrect symbian for these feature phones? I think maybe not.
or just let them run open source linux software (like that Plasma OS, or some of the other Linux mobile projects)
Linux can definitely be used to make a super low-power OS, and the opensource community would absolutely develop many secure and powerful solutions for people.
I just wish there was a precedent for accessible Linux on mobile (for now its very difficult to install Linux on mobile, you often need a specific device, and once installed there are usability issues since the community is so small).
Even better if other vendors like Microsoft (Windows Mobile 2.0?) got in on it.
Imagine buying a phone and installing one of several mobile OSs of your choice, much like a desktop.
There are about 3 billion who don't even have cellphones, trust - this will do if really needed/really wanted (not all 3 billion of course but still). Everybody can't get flagship phones, that's the point. So, many people simply just need one to call and text (SMS) despite you saying its much more than that now, I think not.
Wish a phone like this with Nokia brand. Usb C, no camera, kaiOs or s40. Miss my Nokia 515

What's the point of KaiOS if the team behind this operating system make it resemble Android more and more, as time goes on? I don't know much about it but it used to give the impression that it would revolutionize the feature phone for a contemporary market with a whole, new set of needs, without Google's tentacles manipulating it. But that's not the case anymore.
The kind of people who need or want a feature phone, would buy one for two main reasons:
a) Affordability, which also implies ease of replacement and so on.
b) A desire to stay away from smartphones for a variety of reasons: their addictiveness, their frequent intrusion in daily activities, their many ways to invade privacy; a disregard for smartphones or an unfamiliarity to them.
KaiOS seemed to be a good contender for offering a modern, polished solution for the needs a feature phone represents as a device for basic telecommunication, but why add in wifi, apps, an AI assistant and the like? Isn't that an equivalent to slowly building an OS that's meant for smartphones instead of feature phones?
To clarify, this is NOT running KaiOS.
This is just a modified Android from Xiaomi
But I would argue (about Kai OS adding Wifi, apps, and an AI assistant), that Kai OS makes the process of using your phone simpler. But in turn it means you wont want to do more complicated actions (social media for example) because it is clunky, slow, and generally not comfortable with a d-pad and T9. You still have the ability to connect when you want to or need to, but you don't spend hundreds of dollars on hardware that makes you want to check social media all the time.
I think Kai OS's web functions are to allow people to "get away" from smart phones, without losing out on important communication functionality. Sure I'd like to avoid checking Twitter or something every day, but I'd also like to be able to send my friend a facebook message if I need to. The AI assistant just lets you do quick simple things like check weather or use google maps, ona device whose UI is restrictive for those things.
It's a great compromise. And ultimately if you just want an early 2000's feature phone, you can still buy new ones online without Kai OS (just phone functions).

"Qin" in the brand name is not about the "Qin Dynasty" but folks, such phones in China market is for the old folks who can't get use to the latest OS.

Xiaomi should do the same design as the Siemens M65, M55, MC60, C65, CX65, S65, CX75 but all in KaiOS version and with usb type c charging port, 3 to 4 inch samoled display, memory card slot up to 64GB, fm radio, flash light, 16 mega pixel rare camera with flash, 16 mega pixel front camera. That dark rectangular bar phone design is physically boring.

Camera will always be shit so I agree with rest of the thing. I would rather want a good audiodac and maybe a decent battery life. It would be the best alternative phone.
