It was for a few reasons 1. To keep the plot interesting, if nothing bad happens nothing grips the viewer, they want to evoke a feeling from us, the bad things make us root even more for a happy outcome. 2. To make Gandia look even more like a villain, if he hadn’t have executed Nairobi he wouldn’t be half of a threat as he is. 3. Something had to unite the team and reenergise them, Rio was back, Lisbon was alive it would essentially have been over after that but after losing Nairobi they have something to keep them going and keep them fighting and finish the goal.

I was holding myself right till at the end when all shouted "for Nairobi".. then I burst into crying.. I cried for a good half an hour. I can't imagine I got so emotionally attached with an on screen character. Dear writers, please, PLEASE, think ONCE before writing what impact will it have to the viewers. I got devasted by the idea that I won't be seeing her anymore. Nairobi, we all love you and wherever you're, I hope you get the smell of it.
