Hey Steve, if you have not tried "Parallel Jaw Pliers" it looks like they might be uniquely suited to the work you were doing putting that string through the peg.

Good video. In the video, the pin replaced is a pin for a single wire. If the opposite end of the wire goes to another pin, I was told to also loose that other pin to avoid the string breaking when retuning the note (both pins must be alternatively gradually streched) and that is what I have succesfully done.
I have replaced myself (I am not a piano tuner) all pins of my Yamaha U3 (year 70's) with #2 pins (originals pins were #1) and the piano kept tuned very well... until now. Now there are about two dozens of pins that are very loose again, that must be replaced with #3 and some are so lose that must replaced with #4. Will this end (the pin block does not seem to be cracked) or what would happen after the pins of largest available size become loose? Replacing the pin block and begin again replacing the pins every two years starting with #1, or is it better to find a new piano?

Replacing pins so ofthen is very unusual, to say the least. If the pin block is cracked, no pin will fix it, only worsen it. Replacing pin block with a new one is a very advanced procedure, that require quite a lot of equipment and knowledge. If possible, get a trained technician to evaluate the situation. But if what you are saying is true, and you need new larger pins just after two years, i would suggest to just get a different piano. Not neccesarily a new one, good quality 50y old piano has no businnes having such problems in the first place.

I have this very old standup piano that was going to get demolished because nobody wanted it, and when I came across it I asked if I could have it for my daughter. After receiving permission to take it home, it was pushed (it's on castors) on the sidewalk to my house and brought into my basement. Sadly, before my daughter could even got a chance to play it she was murdered and that was in April of 2018. Anyway, I've kept this piano because it sounds so beautiful for as old as it is despite all it's keys being chipped, thinking I will learn how to play piano even though I am not gifted like my daughter naturally was. As I age I am now facing going blind because of late stage Glaucoma, but before that happens I am going to try a fix the chips on the keys, fix a few keys that stick and maybe even try to refinish the wood because that is how beautiful sounding this piano really is. Not sure how far I am going to get with anything I want to do, but so far your video's that I have seen are inspirational. From what I can tell/hear...the piano itself doesn't need to be tuned and that in itself is amazing. When I go blind I want to write children's songs and maybe I will. I am going to attempt to fix the chips on the key's first, and I am assuming they are probably ivory but will make an effort to verify that.

I wish you well on your project. I am glad to you have found our videos inspirational. There are many procedures on these old uprights that I believe can be sussesfully performed by an amature with a willingness to try and some determination. The availabilty of tools and supplies and pertinent information also goes a long way in making it possible.
