What a sound what playing. Now that we are coming out of COVID I cannot wait to hear this sound again. I listened to the practice sesion the the night before on The Altera set. I do not think when I see Frank moving through the slow air that we may never hear a sound like this again. Beautifull......
I know I have said this before but this performance reminds me of every reason why I played pipes dont mind the drones. The musicality of the whole set, the sound, the playing, the balance between pipes and drums. This is the standard. Well Done to FM and Best Wishes for the upcoming year. And more of this.
Really cannot get enough of that slow air part onwards thru the end. Just made my eyes water on the beautiful sound and melody. The percussions are also perfectly blended. Typical FMM brilliance. They deserve the win. Hoping this year will bring strong competition tho!
At our watching party in Louisiana we bet money on which band will win. Right when this set ended I shouted "all my money on Field Marshal!" and got my payoffs at the end of the day. Fantastic piping.
Beginning Pipers should take a close look at the hand position of the lower hand on the chanter and where the thumb rests on the chanter BEHIND the middle and ring finger. Get used to putting your thumb there and you will use less energy with a lighter grip on the chanter. It really makes a difference, I can't stress that to my students enough.
That last tune is so good. Does anyone know where I could find sheet music for it? I have mostly worked the tune out but would be keen to learn it properly.
just been listening to a VERY interesting mix of bagpipes and French rap from Brittany. Do yourselves a favour.call up " LA TRIBU BLEUE DES AIRS". Pipes @ 100mph!!.
It' "Edison" I believe. They play it as a 3-part hornpipe. I don't know if there's a 4th part. They often cut tunes to fit within the allowed time limits for the performance.
Edison (Hornpipe) Morning blossom (Jig) The Pipers Bonnet (Jig) Nameless Air (Slow Air) Jane Campbell (Strathspey) Idk the name of the 2nd strathspey Richard Dwyers (Reel) The Hard Drive (Reel)
i'm still trying to figure out why FMM is so, not only good, but PERFECT in every possible way.... [first off they never make any mistakes, piping wise] but i've come to believe that because they're NORthern Irish, they have the best of both worlds when it comes to musicality, demeanor, precision, attitudes (FTMP), appearance, style, well just about every facet of anything really. I know they're not necessarily chock solely full of orange men, at least from what i know that practice of disallowing catholics to join the ranks is a bygone practice - the inclusion-oriented aspect has been squarely cemented for some time now.... anyways, canadians are great solo pipers as anyone obviously knows, but they're pipe bands in the G1 level ultimately pale in comparison to what is (?)austensibly the "only" band IN N.Ireland..... Peel, Windsor, SFU etc (why do canadians insist on naming their bands only after places on a map by the way) have, IMHO, rather underwhelming medleys, well at least SFU anyways. Odd Bb slow airs and lots of harmonies that come off as, idk weird? FMM goes out to the circle and it's as if their instruments were on steroids... David, Bob, you obviously have no small part in that ... so why is FMM always going to be the best band? the era of bands from "provinces" is over, bands from the "states" never had a chance, sorry Colin.... aside from Stuart Liddel's amazing band, um, i basically turn on BBC's videos watch the medleys from FMM, whatever and district's, and call it a night. God this was a complete and utter pointles ramble at 3am.... but Nevada is incredibly boring
What an absolute belter of a medley, outstanding throughout, last 2 minutes were out of this world especially, FMM are first class 👏🏻
A stunning performance, fantastic tune selection, and incredible arrangements for drumming and piping. Wish I was there and then.

Very honoured to have witnessed them playing that day, which they emerged the World Champions!
I really appreciate that the sound technicians working for BBC were able to give more clarity to the drumming this year.
