  • Making the right choices about your food plots now greatly impacts your hunting season. Not all seeds do as well when broadcast compared to being drilled. We've worked with Green Cover Seed to create a blend with the right seeds for broadcasting into small food plots. It's designed to create a lot of forage and be very attractive to your deer.

    Hey, great video! This is exactly what I was looking for. I cleared a couple of hidey holes this year, and was looking for a good blend to put in them.

    Just broadcast spread Hidey Hole between 2 rain storms and then ran over the existing food stand with my Utv...looking forward to see what this 10:45 blend does...

    I got clover brassica in before rain. But my rye was the next day after rain. Atleast the soil had moisture I guess.

    What y’all call “hidey hole”, folks in Georgia call destination plots. LOLOL

    • @davidcrump2348
      @davidcrump2348 10 місяців тому +2

      Destination plot is a larger plot. Hides hole is a very small plot. Just a quick in and out plot to get a first bite of green on the way out to feed in evening and last bite of green on the way in to the bed in the morning.

    I wish Mr. Grant would show the rotation he plants to build soil from year to year…from what I gathered it’s wheat rye crimson clover barley oats year one next season crimp it in June plant beans then next season plant the summer blend crimp that in august plant the first crop rotation with a drill after crimping…im probably wrong but Mr woods should make an episode on the planting rotations for multiple years for everyone

      I always plant blends - both spring and summer - and usually have at least 8 species in each blend.

    Is this blend a perennial? Worked my tail off putting in two what you hidey hole plots in the woods! The preparation was the hard work killing weeds and getting the soil exposed! I went to local food mill and picked up white clover that I’m not expecting much this Fall season along with Chicory which I’m full of hope will become a perennial. Winter Rye and tillage turnips.
    Tilled the ground after putting in 19-19-19, 46 Urea, spread Winter Rye and Chicory, packed the plots. Spread white clover and tillage radish repacked the plots. Rained this morning and more coming 2 out of the next 3 days. Think the Rye and turnips will give me something as the others can get established.
    My equipment is an ATV, 4 foot Spring tooth drag, Otter box with cinder blocks for my cultipack, hand rake, Earthway seeder!
    Intentions are to direct the deer to the 2.5 acre plot which is Sweet Feast Brassica blend on half of the plot and Fall Forage blend on other and rotate them next year. Fortunate to have huge irradiated AG fields next to me with either corn or soybeans. Scared of putting stands on the plots tho… mature bucks learn fast!
    Thanks for the video!

    How do you build soil in a hidey hole food plot? Part of the crimp and drill process was to keep the soil covered. How do you incorporate the principles of soil health into a broadcast system?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  10 місяців тому

      I ofter use prescribed fire to remove the mature crop and then broadcast the new crop. This leaves all the roots intact which is 70% of the organic matter!

    If I’m planting a .7 acre food plot should I use hidey hole, fall release, or fall release browse pressure? Ps I have hogs where I’m at!

    • @ce400
      @ce400 10 місяців тому

      A .7 acre plot isn’t considered a buddy hole plot.
      It’s bordering on a large plot size.

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  10 місяців тому

      If there are a lot of deer in the area, I'd go with the Fall Browse Pressure Release.

  • @josephkilmer7440
    @josephkilmer7440 7 місяців тому

    Grant, would you do this process with this blend every year? Or do you have to start with the summer release??

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  6 місяців тому

      Joe - I always rotate the summer and fall blends - spring and late summer planting dates.

    Doc: What are thoughts/response to this baiting vs food plots & habitat manipulation delima? Biological dogma has taught us concentrating wildlife in small spaces is never good, you know the reasons. Yet, we know it happens, even in open range. Strategies/regs to reduce CWD transmission has brought this issue back into the mix. Perhaps a short clip or show on this topic? Thanks Doc!

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  10 місяців тому +1

      Scott - I don't believe any state considers food plots as bait. I know food plots are legal in all states.

    • @scottschaeffer8920
      @scottschaeffer8920 10 місяців тому

      @@GrowingDeerTV no, not the legality of them. The parallels the pro-baiting crowds are making between bait & food plots? Stating there’s no difference between the two? Challenging the Moratorium on baiting to prevent CWD spread.

    When’s the best time to plant this in north Arkansas?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  10 місяців тому +2

      It's best to plant when there's at least 1/2" or rain in the forecast and about 45 to 60 days before the average first frost date.
