- This track is from an amazingly talented singing group called the Makaha Sons of Ni'iHau and their LP called Keala on POKI RECORDS 1978. It's a great song about smoking Grass aka Pakalolo. Listen at your own risk. The Vinyl Vindicator does not take any responsibility for your actions or intentions! Enjoy! A Really GREAT LP!! I was first turned on to this band by the legendary Johnny Satan from Be Boppin' Antiques in Westfield, NY. Years later I was lucky enough to score this nugget at a Thrift & now I am pleased to share it with you. Pass it on...
Wow, I almost cry when heard dis song. I grew up on the leeward side. My Dad was a cook at The Jolly Roger in maili. It opened up in 1974, There, is where the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau got their start professionally. IZ was still 16 when they started playing at The Jolly Roger. My Dad "Billy" was confronted by Israel one day back in the kitchen of The Jolly Roger restaurant. IZ said to my Dad, "eh Billy! Try listen to dis song, I jus wen write em, tell Me what you tink. I goin try sing em tonight." So Israel sang this song to my Dad . My Dad laughingly said " das pretty catchy, but you talkin about Pakalolo (weed)". At that time Smokin Weed was pretty normal . So My Dad said "Go try em and see if the crowd like's it". THE REST IS HISTORY. I GUESS THE CROWD LIKED IT!
Mahalo for bringing back some good memories of my Dad and The Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. My Dad past away this past April. Thats why I was soo emotional when this song started to play. Mahalo nui, Aloha!

As far as is known Michael, ALL of Makaha Sons of Niihau albums are available on-line, either the Barnes & Noble or Mountain Apple Records. Living 808, get my music from B&N or local used books/vinyl records & cd store. If you search, you SHOULD be able to find other Hawaiian music releases on UA-cam...Good luck & Happy hunting!
