The funny thing is that as much as it looks like Conan is begrudging Norm for taking forever to tell the joke, it’s actually exactly what he wanted him to do. Norm had already done his segment and the next guest scheduled couldn’t make it so they asked Norm to stay for 7 more minutes. Norm said he had nothing left to talk about because he only planned on being there for one segment so he completely winged what is normally a 10 second joke and turned it into a 5+ minute story which eventually led to the simple “because the light was on” punchline. Norm was actually doing Conan a huge favor. What a legend.

@@waynecanning4122 Andy misinterpreted the specific joke that he was mad about, too. The joke he was ranting about on Twitter wasn't a gay joke, it was a rape joke. The punchline was not that Andy is gay (that had become the self-evident premise in Norm's jokes by then), the punchline was that he was raped. It's like Andy watched that segment once with the preconceived notion that because every retard on Twitter is calling him gay by saying he's Swedish-German, that's what Norm's joke was actually about. It wasn't. Andy never bothered to look into it more and for some reason had to bring it up and talk about it in length while they were talking about Norm's death. "We DON'T DO THOSE JOKES ANYMORE! And we shouldn't!" Speak ill of the dead, and all that.
Andy is sensitive to the issue because his dad and son are both gay. And because he's the typical raging Hollywood ultraliberal who loves to publicly talk about how straight white men are a plague on the Earth (I listened to his podcast and he said that almost verbatim).

The story behind this is they asked Norm to do a second 7 min segment at the last moment and he had nothing prepared. So he did a Colin Quinn jpke that usually last about 35 seconds and stretched it out with extra details, names, and pauses to fill the time. This was not prepared, total improv., and is now a Norm classic.

You have got to watch some of Norm's Weekend Update segments, with OJ Simpson or Hillary Clinton. OR "Norm Loses His Sponsers." All gold. Miss you Norm.

His next level genius is that he used Russian names, playing off the depressed Russian male longing for the glory days stereotype.

Random Norm Macdonald memory: I was randomly half ass watching a live poker tournament on tv about 2 years ago, that took place in either Nevada or Arizona. I was also chatting online with a few people who lived in that general region, and they started talking about an earthquake that they just experienced.
I knew the tournament was in that general area, so I watched to see if they'd mention it. And they did. They showed people's reaction, and showed the light fixtures swaying around.. Then later, they did an interview with Norm Macdonald, because he was there playing poker. That might've partially been why I was watching it in the first place, because I noticed him there. But I think he lost before doing the interview.

The great thing about this joke is that he said it's an old joke that he just made better because simple jokes like a moth walks into a room isn't made anymore. The guy was a genius
