- Visiting Fiji we made a cruise with Blue Lagoon Cruises. On one of the visited islands, Rabi, the local school gave a performance of their traditional singing and dancing,a real happening.
I would like to reitterate a few facts submitted previously: I am of Kiribati background born and raised in Fiji. I have been to Rabi Island as a child and still have lots of families living there. Banabans are originally from Ocean island or Banaba Island in the Kiribati group. I previously worked for the National Archives of Fiji for 6yrs where I had access to information on how the Banabans came to Fiji in the 1940s.
Yes. I am Ahmed Memdouh love you women Fiji? I am from maoco. Is me wahtsapp. 00212771397866
Kiribati dancing's really fantastic.
Love my Banaban People.....Hope to join Ya'll the coming future.....God bless you all.....
Reminds me of when I was on a Blue Lagoon cruise myself, back in 1980 when I was a teenager.
Lovely people they are part of my province call cakaudrove on the far north of fiji, total of 5 village on the island, nuku, uma, tapewa, tabing and bukanikai or vunisinu. As are native fijian its indeed are honour and pleasure to be with them along with the kioan.i guess we are all cousin and all under the pasific ocean which we call home.
Meli Rokotakala. That is so nice to hia. I'm from the west viti levu but I love cakaudrove because it's a l place in fiji that brings alot of islanders and fiji half cus we call kai loma. I love it because its about 3 or 4 different bloods come together. I know that Samoan, inglish, and Fijian blood connected to one.
very skilled and joyfull dancers, these kids! awesome!
thanks for uploading, lovely dancing, the boys moves are fantastic. Malo lav.
Should take my Tahiti Uke and traveling one year as a backpacker in this aera.
Starting in NS, visiting Fiji, the Cooks, Tahiti, Bora Bora an the easter islands
I know there is a lot more to see, like Tonga, Samoa, New Caledonea, Kiribati ... MamaMia so much to see ... but than I would need 5 years.
Ale ślicznie tańczą. Dla mnie jest to egzotyczny taniec i bardzo mi się podoba
i love kiribati. My uncle got married to the beautiful daughter of the Prime minister, I love my cousins and I love their dance and culture, I miss them so much
Banabans have a beutiful dance, i'm a great fan, i occasionally go to Rabi Island...if you want to got there the best time is during the 15th dec Rabi day celebration which is a week long festival remebering their arrival on Rabi. they are very fun people to be with!
Rabians (Banabans) are from Banaba Islands which was indeed claimed by Kiribati but they are not Gilbertese, nowadays they are refered to as indigenous peoples of Fiji along side the Vitians, Rotumans, and Kioans
I am half Fijian an half Australian and I love these dancers
Eli and Tima Soro me too

Thank you for this beautiful you tube. I am going to Fiji for the first time this week, and already I dont want to leave. Business trip,, but hoping to escape for music and food.
Isa! Rabi is near where my family live in Cakaudrove province in northeastern Fiji.
My mothers family are from Naviti in the Yasawa group which is in the north west. The 300 or so islands that make up Fiji are spread over 194,000 square kilometres of ocean.
nice kiribati dancing from the gals ... luv it
whether Banaba or Rabi they are uni-versal-que!
oh so beautiful , thankyou for sharing, I enjoyed watching ...what type their skirts made of? mori? that was wonderful... bout time someone post nice authentic post... not insulting ones like some I saw... Mau ru ru ...Fiji rocks:)

I thought as well.. Been trying to identify the group behind the 'opening' song?

@@elizabethtabore2658 Please, what is the song they are singing?
@@belauidid Please, what is the song they are singing?
Hello: i am Montagnard jarai related to malayo polynesian austronesian family
Any Cook Islanders here?
Skip to 4.20 and see if you can pick up the song lol
Okay could you explain what’s wrong with it?
@@BonjoMaddisonWonne who said there was anything wrong with it?
Cook Island songs are very common in Kiribati dances especially Banaban, Phoenix and Line Islanders. The Phoenix and Line Islands to the east of Kiribati actually to the Ura Pau and Himene as alot of Cook Islanders intermixed with the locals there during the Phosphate Mining period. Here is another song you might find familiar.
ua-cam.com/video/u-QtIZtXALk/v-deo.html
@@TM686K thanks for that. I do recognise the tune of the song in the video you’ve given the link to, but some of the words aren’t familiar as I’m guessing they might’ve used Kiribati words instead of Cook Islands Maori
@@BonjoMaddisonWonne the song at 4.20 is a Cook Islands song;
Kua kite au rai iakoe maine…
(I have seen you miss/lady)
E ruperupe to mata manea to ngutu vene reka e maine
(Beautiful are your eyes and your sweet lips miss/lady)
…. E tae roa atu ki to ngutu mata manea ua atu e
(….all the way to your ever so beautiful eyes and lips…)
……No toku inangaro iakoe….
(……because of my love for you…)
Thats what I could pick up
south pasifik dance i like its
Rabi is not part of the Yasawa group its near Vanua Levu
The people living on rabi originate from kiribati? hence their dancing style. Im pretty sure they speak kiribati too?. Could be wrong. Great vid by the way ,hoping to make my way there soon.
Yess...when I first saw them I thought they were from Kiribati, actually yes, they originated from Kiribati.
Nice
its quite funny whn they don't want to be called kiribati....yet some of their students a sponsored by Kiribati Governemnt!! And the fact that they come from Kiribati....
Farhad K yeah thats very true..most of them they dont want to be called Kiribati..its so funny haha
My Friend phosphate comes with money and money comes with pride. Its a common receipe when you have money you tend to feel better than your neighbors hence neglecting their origin.
Like.
i found out what my hips r for.. LOL :D
i love Banaban dancing...i want to learn. Somebody pls teach me.
da Banabans are Micronesians they are not part of Fiji although Rabi is in Fiji the people on Rabi are Micronesians, not Melanesians nor Polynesians just Micronesians brought to Fiji by da damn Brits... they're in exile
jenmajol They’re not exiled, rather relocated because of phosphate mining & WW2.
Ahh rimajol ejab kwe ri-kiribati jab kanan rot ne smh
I'm indigenous Fijian and you are fully wrong. Look at the map about pacific. RABI IS NOT ON POLYNESIAN. IS ON MELANESIAN SIDE. Anyway, as indigenous, we look at them as Rabi people, but we feel that they are one of us as indigenous Fijian. Rabi and Rotuman a part of 🇫🇯 🇫🇯 🇫🇯. God bless them.
@@eddietomasi6164 what are they wrong about ? You probably didn’t read it right because nowhere does it say Rabi is Polynesian, and the island they came from is in Micronesia therefore that makes them Micronesians living in Fiji.
who the fuck dislike this, i love this
this ain't fiji is it, i'm from viti levu, never seen anything like this.
buladtum they are culturally Micronesian. Their dances are Micronesians but they are also fijian citizens.
Oilei iratou la mai Rabi qo bunene!
Read the video title next time, unless you don't know where Rabi island is
the costumes are kind of like papua costumes
were is fiji located
eddie strong south Pacific
That's like polynesian dances!!
that's bcuz they're from Kiribati and Kiribati is part of the polynesians
koko unknown, FYI Kiribati is part of Micronesia not Polynesia
Obviously all of us Pacific island cultures would have some same dance movements . we are one ! Polynesians aren't the only ones who shake their hips like seriously lmao and kiribati is a Micronesian island
@@cams.3287
Yup you'll see similarities with shaking of the hips, hand gestures, dancing, chanting, singing, wearing grass skirts, floral ornaments on hair, etc among Pacific Island Cultures whether your from Micronesia,Melanesia or Polynesia.
@@kokounknown3531 lol...no Kiribati is Micronesian 🤣
dude this is not kiribati this is rabi ,cakaudrove , fiji.
singing in Kiribati songs and dancing in Kiribati style but theres whole lot to this story then u don't know
@eddiestrong1
Shareen bula
Chuk chuk chuk suve te bitha
Rabi part of the Yasawas? LOL. Get your geography right my friend.
hahahaha,,...I hear 1 of the Rarotonga songs being sung in here..
here's some of the lyrics..
ruperupe, to mata manea, to ngutu vene reka e maine..
e tae roa atu ki to ngutu mata manea ua atu e...
Lol I hear it too. I know a lot of Cook Islanders were missionaries to Kiribati, maybe to Banaba too, and they picked it up. Who knows lol
Bit late to the party but yes alot of I-Kiribati people especially in Banaba, the Line and Phoenix Islands intermingled with Cook Islanders most notably Penrhyn and Manihiki during the Blackbirding and Phosphate Mining period.
One particular scenario was when a Blackbirding ship which took around 80-100 people from Kiribati got turned away in South America but instead of making the whole trek back to Kiribati they dropped them off to Penrhyn instead where they mixed with the locals.
Bullet Boom Boom What you’re saying makes a lot of sense. The northern islands of the Cook Islands (including Manihiki & Tongareva/Penrhyn) are close to the Kiribati Islands. Also, it was from these 2 islands (particularly Tongareva) that people were taken during the blackbirding...well from what I know at least. So I’m not surprised by the mixing.
It is a Cook Island song taught to the youth by the late Nooroa Vakalalabure. She and her families visits Rabi often to be with their half Aitutaki families. They learnt their songs and they learn our language!!!
@@pelenisealofa1431 I know some members of the Vakalalabure family who are half Aitutakian now living in the Cooks. I wonder if it might be the same family
this is actually my cultures dance called Kiribati
Cathleen Malaga no its fijian i think you are half Fijian im from fiji i thought Kiribati was part of fiji.
this is Kiribati dance. NOT fijian.
@@BonjoMaddisonWonne this is not even the kiribati dance it actually banaban dancing .....nowadays we call it as part of the traditional Fijian dance since the banabans are residing now in fiji
@@tetenatalipua7030 this is a Kiribati dance, I've even seen Fijian do our Tahitian dance...fucking ugly cunts
@@boydspeaks6231 someone's hurt oof
this ain't any fijian i know, it's tripping me out!!!!!
buladtum they are Micronesians from Fiji. Micronesians from Banaba island relocated in the early 40s by the Brits to Rabi island in Fiji.
Banaban Islanders are recent settlers in Fiji. Their dance reminds me of the island of Pukapuka in the Cook Islands group. Need to check if Banabans were resettled in Fiji because of the nuclear test and whether they are Polynesian or Micronesians? Awesome dance, though.
@@jonahtisamphd.6101 Kiribati are the original and authentic hip-shaking dances of the pacific. Thorough research will tell you every other form of hip shaking (outside of Micronesia) came after. Especially in Tahiti
Gulati999
They're Fijians and not .....I- kiribati anymore just like Rotumans....
Yes Fijian don't dance like that...
Rotumans were always Fijian.
Not Kiribati anymore ahaahaha so they are Kiribati lol idiot
Rotumans are Polynesian outliers of Fiji, and this people of Banaban originate from Kiribati.
Kiribati much
