      After my mother's funeral in her old "home town" of Kalocsa, Hungary, we were making our way from the family plot through the old city cemetery when suddenly two wild doves (which I took to be mourning doves, because they looked the same as our American variety) suddenly flew by us and settled on tombstones just an arm's length from me. I was so startled I just stopped and stared at them. After about 10 seconds, the pair took off. It's the closest thing to a paranormal experience I have ever had in my life. And no -- I don't believe it was a coincidence either.

    My husband and I had a mourning dove rescue from 2014 to 2021. I believe her life was shortened a lot because she was shot and seemed to be a runt. She was much smaller than normal mourning dove adults. She also never laid any eggs. She was a tough cookie though. Big personality, lot of attitude, and a huge glutton. I miss her so much. She was my first pet. 😢

      My first love was pigeons. I would walk around trees, searching for babies or eggs that had fallen. I had an incubator made from a shoebox and I saved hundreds of doves, pigeons and sparrows. The tree trimmers would always bring me the babies before cutting their nests away. Pigeons and doves would always stick around and were like pets. The sparrows not so much. I would watch them hatch and hand feed them and teach them to fly and as soon as they could, they would bite me and fly away 😅

    To after 6 years look out my window and see 5-7 of these beautiful creatures, and realize they all have their quirky personalities. - it started 6 years ago with what i thought was a pigeon eating rocks in my driveway and after a very hard day i laughed at its stupidity as i sat blankly looking out my window. Then it would be there every morning, - what in the world is this. - then i saw they had a friend .they were always together.God has his ways it seemed after a death or defeat they would show up to cheer me up. So i put out a bird feeder. And 6 years later on my birthday I seen 5-7 yesterday .i named gramps and gram Henry and Henreitta ,every day id see them , up till this week it was just them then while outside I see 2 lil babies and also a bunch of them ❤.
    This morning It was a very lil baby with its mama or dad. And i sat and talked with them and eventually they both flew off at same time. 😊 Pretty cool.

    I live in the central san joaquin valley in a house my wife and I have rented for the last 10 years, doves started nesting in an old hanging planter and every year my wife and I enjoyed watching these quiet birds do their thing which ends with the young fledging and next early spring there is another pair nesting in the same planter. One year, a guest we had in our home walked out onto our back patio and was shocked to witness a hawk that could not have viewed the planter from the air because our patio has an 11' X 30' solid wood with rain tiles sun shade over the cement patio, this hawk landed on the fence which is at least 7' away from the nest and grabbed both pre fledgling doves and flew off with them after taking a few bites. For two years after, no doves nested in our planter, the first pair of doves that did were early in spring and it was cold at that time, I noticed that the nest with eggs was left for long periods as in hours of no warmth given the eggs, those two eggs never hatched and the nest was finally abandoned. The next year successful pair and same next and same next year, so, why would any dove chose to nest in a high traffic area where humans pass within 8" from their nest and not have a problem at all with that day after day while rearing young and come back every year skipping two years after a predation of young?

    • @MarksBackyardBirds
      @MarksBackyardBirds  Рік тому

      Dove are frequent victims of predators. Adults and nestlings. Luckily they have several nests per season. My guess is it is young birds that choose to nest in locations like you are describing. At work there's a female pigeon and her nest is by picnic table in a small tree that lays mass eggs and on break I'd pay attention to her and tell everyone about how that pigeon sure gets around and tell everyone how many times she's had offspring, they all joked at me cause I knew this information.🤣Then I moved out kinda in country and started feeding birds so I guess that's when I knew I liked bird's and male doves are hilarious, Their smooth too, they will blend in and fake eat and try to hurry up and jump on female's or act like their leg is injured and jump on em..😅

I was wondering if you could direct me to or post a video on how to communicate with them? What I mean is, a sound they make to greet or calm each other or maybe a head bob or some kind of body language.

    How can I care for 2 baby morning doves that seem to be orphans? The nest was attacked and one parent survived. That parent sat on the eggs until they hatched and stayed for almost a week. Now It seems to be gone... Probably something happened to it. It has not returned in about 3 hours. I can see their little heads moving in the nest from my window. Please advise.

    The most stunningly beautiful music found on this earth are (in no particular order): (1) Bach's violin concerto in A minor and (2) the haunting coo of the North American mourning dove.
    I say "North American" because Europe also has a type of mourning dove similar if not identical in appearance to our mourning dove, but their coo is totally different, and not half as beautiful.

      @@MarksBackyardBirds I didn't think of that. This is my first time dealing with doves in all my years of gardening. I learned to grow lot of fruits and veggies for myself and the wild life around me. So we're not at constant conflict. it's a never ending war so I learned to grow a lot more and just coexist instead. the wild animals learned not to gorge themselves, they take what they need, and leave and still have plenty left. I wouldn't have a problem if the doves didnt eat like nothing is going to be there tommrow, That and only eating part of the fruit and leaving the rest. I got a camera out there watching what comes and goes so I know it's them doing it. And the wild animals won't touch what the doves bit into. And usually I like birds in my garden because they eat the bugs and leave my fruits and vegetables alone as long as I provide birds with a source of water so they're not poking holes in my tomatoes. But doves are different. and I'm afraid since the doves are gorging and leaving bit into fruit it might disrupt the balance I managed to create causing everything that visits to gorge as well. Restarting the war that begin years ago.

      The colors that show up in bird poop is generally caused by something in their diet. Berries are a good example. They do like a variety of seeds you can offer up. Safflower is their favorite but will eat millet, sunflower and many others.

    Are Mourning Doves indeterminate layers? Has anyone ever tried to domesticate them? Why do they make a squeaking sound when they fly? Are there any other birds that do that? Is it an evolutionary innovation, does it help them in any way? I always feel bad because it seems like they fly away screaming as I pass.

    • @MarksBackyardBirds
      @MarksBackyardBirds  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Marylou. No, Mourning Doves are determinate layers. My guess is someone has at some point but they have so little meat to them, pigeons were much more useful in that sense. The sound comes from their feathers as they are taking off and some of the other "ground" dwelling birds make similar noises. My guess is it is "hopefully" distracts the predators enough for them to escape.

    We have two morning doves living under our tiki bar on our back deck. They don't seem to have a nest but have been here for the past couple days laying on the deck next to out turtle tank. They are relaxing on the deck not up high in the beams where they would be safe but on the deck floor? My question is do they sometimes nest on the ground?? Or is this weird behavior trying to figure out if they could be sick or something. They don't appear sick just seems weird that they would be relaxing down low instead of up high??

    • @MarksBackyardBirds
      @MarksBackyardBirds  3 роки тому

      I doubt they are sick. I have never known them to nest on the ground although frequently rather low in a bush or shrub. They do count on their coloration and stillness to keep them from attracting the attention of a would be predator. My guess is they are just loafing.

    • @swhiter3

      They’ve been on my deck for over a month now. They do nest very low occasionally. She had her babies in an old flower pot about 5 feet off the ground. Her babies stayed on the ground after 2 weeks and so did she. It was amazing!
