Only problem is they get broken by heavy wet snow, or even just thick snowfall. Every winter mine get crushed to the ground and many stalks are broken. I have four plants along my walkway of about twelve feet. For the life of me I cannot see how to stake them as the branches go in every direction. Any covering would just smash them down harder. They are hardy and require almost no maintenance surviving more than twenty years in their present location and about ten years before than in cut thirty gallon barrels. Some years they do hold their flowers all spring and summer while other years not so much. Great for long color. It would be nice to help them during the snows, when they get flattened. This is in SE Alaska in a temperate rainforest on the coast with winters to single digits and rainfall sixteen feet or more.

      Hi Danielle!
I definitely learned most of what I know from growing up in the garden with my mother and from my own trial and error experiences .
But I do have a list of book recommendations if you are a book worm!
My two favorite house plant books ( and really the only ones I trust) :
The house plant expert by dr. D.G. Hessayon
Greenworks - tender loving care for plants by Judith Handelsman and Sara Baerwald (this book is from 1974!)
Latin for gardeners by Lorraine Harrison
Edible and medicinal plants by Terry Willard
Wildflowers of Alberta by R.G.H Cormack
The book of seeds edited by Paul Smith
      (Literally a seed BIBLE)
Fruits, vegetables, and herbs: an illustrated encyclopedia
Those are my favourites , but there are an endless amount of plant books out there! Have fun!

How much can you prune during winter? Where at the branch do you cut?

    • @plantspeak7117
      @plantspeak7117  3 роки тому

      Hi👋
I personally don’t prune more than half, just to ensure the base still has some protection against the harsh conditions.
What zone are you in? And how big is your cinquefoil shrub?
When I prune I cut really heavy branches all the way to the base, especially if they are on the outside . It’s nice to maintain that “mounded” shrub form- again for protection but also for aesthetic. The pro of cutting down to the base is it can also create some air flow to decrease humidity which can lead to diseases.
But if you want to prune more for shape, it’s also fine to do a “surface” prune ( about a quarter down the stems) This can be done a little later in the Spring too once the foliage has come out.
Like I mention in the video, cinquefoil is quite hardy, it would likely survive any pruning , but that is what I recommend .
Make sure your pruning shears/tool is nice and sharp! A dull pruning tool can really damage the stem ends where you cut. You always want a clean cut.
Hope this helps! What color are your cinquefoil flowers?

@@plantspeak7117 Hi! I live on the west coast of Norway, so zone 7. I have a yellow one. I inherited it from my parents when they moved from a house with a beautiful garden to an apartment. It's in a container like all my other plants as I only have a paved area outside. It's 90 cm so about 35 1/2 inches. It was the only plant that survived last winter (February 2021) when temperatures went from very mild to all of a sudden minus 13celcius (8,6farenheit). It's also one of the few plants I have that didn't get any pests this summer. I got it two years ago but have never pruned it. It needs to be pruned now.

@@primrosedahlia9466 wow! Norway! Hello from way over in Canada!
I am zone 3 so cinquefoil wouldn’t survive a winter in a pot for me, you are lucky !!
Since it’s in a container, I would prune minimally . Just get rid of any loose scraggly stuff you see , and then prune a tiny bit in the middle down to the base so the shrub gets a good amount of air flow for the winter .

@@plantspeak7117 Wow so you get pretty cold harsh winters then?!! We've had crazy weather here for the last 20+ years or so. When I grew up in the 80s and 90s we had snow in the winters and went sledding down the hills, digging snow caves, building snowmen.. But then it all changed in the late 90s and it's been pretty mild, rainy stormy winters..even the summers have been very rainy and cold.. If it snows it usually doesn't last more than a day, except two occasions - in 2010 we had a ton of snow and minus 25-30 degrees and had to use dumpers to transport all the snow to the Harbour and dump it out in the ocean... And then this winter when we all of a sudden had like 2 weeks with minus 13 and snow. I was surprised when my cinquefoil survived that. I dream of having a proper garden and just using containers for annuals or bulbs. I will try to follow your advice on the pruning. I would like to transplant it over in a larger container with better drainage than what it has today, but it looks pretty good despite the rough winter and the pot it sits in. Are you on Instagram?
