There are not many 20+minute videos on UA-cam I watch the whole thing. usually I skip large portions. This one I savored every second of it. Hanna is so well-spoken, beautiful and gracious. Thank you Van for sharing. This is content I would not mind paying to watch.
It made me cry though I was not Adoptee as I have seen so many orphans in SAIGON when I was living there in my teens...Wars had taken away their fathers, mothers, brothers sisters etc and some parts of their limbs as well; I decided to leave VN in the 70s as the sad scene had bothered me so much...could not study where surrounded with so many sad and unfortunate stuffs
SO HAPPY AND SO PROUD OF HER !!! SHE IS LUCKY TO HAVE 2 FAMILIES AND 4 PARENT and many sibling and 2 extended families. Both of HER families CAN BE SO PROUD OF HER. CAM ON for giving hope to other wonderful Viet's and all their families !!!
Hanna. you might not have western facial features, but you speak so fluently, beautifully and charismatically. Your figurative references such as "rainbows and sunshine" are so easy to grasp, understand and visualize. The Vietnamese students learning English from you don't know how lucky they are. I am a vietnamese immigrant who moved to the US with my family when I was just 6 years old. I can relate to your story.
Hanna's story is so inspiring, glad she was able to reconnect with her culture, and identity:) The continuing journey only gets better, I promise you:) speaking from personal experience. Most people who have not been adopted, don't understand the personal drive to find your cultural identity. Glad to see Hanna, has lots of support on her personal journey. Beautiful story:)
I just found your channel. I love listening to you. I’m from Dallas Fort Worth. This area was a major relocation and resettlement of Vietnamese fleeing the war. Lots of markets, businesses and restaurants all over DFW. I grew up eating pho, and I am 45 now. I love dishes that have bun and com. My girlfriend and I love eating Vietnamese because of the veggies and the herbs that adorn the dishes. My dad is a Vietnam vet, I think he was out of Da Nang, but I cannot remember. My late Grandfather was a Vietnam vet, he spent a lot of time all through out the country. I remember him talking about how beautiful it was. I think the war touched most of us up through current day some how, even if just having a meal at a Vietnamese restaurant here in America as thise people who own these places came here as a result of the war. I’ve always had a facination with Hue and the perfume river. Oh, and HA LONG BAY as well. Someday I hope to come see Vietnam. I have been to Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. On business mostly, but I used to go to Indonesia for business and family as my ex wife is Indonesian. I’ve been to Batam and Java. While I was in Batam, the Indonesian coworkers took me to a refugee camp on an adjacent island. It was so sad. I wish people would remember history and not repeat it, but sadly that doesn’t happen.
Hanna is a remarkable young inspiring woman , see the young pics of her and her birth mother even got myself a little emotional. She is a ray of sunshine and confident about her future , Hanoi is a beautiful part of the world and the ppl are amazing and so friendly. The orphanages are a big part of Vietnam and Hanna is prof just how important they are , so I encourage people to always find an orphanage or a mama to support that are needing it. God Bless You Van and Hanna
This is so cool because I came across this video not knowing that the doctor that Hanna met was my grandma. 12:05 in the video by the way! I'm also adopted in Ba Vi and I'm so glad that I was born and raise in Vietnam where I am able to communicate and know more about my culture. Unfortunately I was at the orphanage since birth and was adopted when I was 8 month old. I'm 15 right now :) and I am always curious about my birth family. I don't know how I should find them if I don't have any info about them though :(
Thank you so much for creating this channel ❤️ For those of us apart of the Vietnamese diaspora, it can be challenging to understand what life looks like in Vietnam today. Especially since our limited exposure of Vietnam comes from our parents', aunts', and uncles' memories. This can be challenging since they haven't been to back to Vietnam after escaping. Vietnam has changed since my family has left and I'm glad there are content creators like you to show those of us apart of the Vietnamese diaspora, the beauty of our motherland. I was born and raised in the US. Most of my family are in the US, Canada, and Australia. Many of my cousins were born in the US, Canada, and Australia so our understanding of being Viet is only that of being Vietnamese-American, Vietnamese-Canadian, and Vietnamese-Australian. I'm glad Hanna was able to share her story and reconnect with her roots. ❤️
Hannah is incredible. She such a beautiful, strong, intelligent, and independent person. This was a great video. I hope she appears in more videos. I am sure her family and friends in the Chicagoland area miss her very much.
So short-sighted for the Vietnamese to not understand that Vietnamese Americans have unique perspectives and insights that would be immensely help their students navigate the English language better than other teachers.
Very true, but not unique to Vietnam, as I think Asian American/Australian/Canadian folks face the same unwarranted prejudice as English teachers in Korea and China too.
Love this content, she seems so nice, friendly and sweet. It was lovely to hear her story and it makes me feel happy and proud that she has been enjoying life in Hà Nội. All the best to Hanna and keep up the good work on this channel !
Hanoi is also my birthplace, and Chicago was the first city I visited in 1971. It must be exciting and rewarding for Hanna to return to her birthplace and reconnect with her Vietnamese relatives.
I am very impressed with this video. The history that HANNAH brings to light and your Q and A aspect was/is very useful for your followers. I was planning to teach ESL in Vietnam ,but covid prevented my return from Canada. I have been following your vids. for sometime, however this one was outstanding and most informative for me personally. Thank you both
If you meet good things today, be joyful. If you encounter bad things today, you must be determined to fix it. Tomorrow will be good or bad..no one can guess! Better days are on the way!
Two Vietnamese conversing in English with each other. Truly global citizens Van Vu & Ha-nna. I recommend Hanna to share her story in Facebook and especially in LinkedIn for proper placement in teaching career. Best wishes
Van, I really loved your interviewing with Hanna, while zipping all over Hanoi made it interesting. Like I said before, this pandemic has put a damper on my life, but Vietnam is still on my “bucket list” in life. I started my adult life in the Vietnam War for 6 years, I hope I can spend some time in the country that formed my entire life. Keep your videos coming. Aloha from Hawaii!
Such a beautiful! I love how you stepped out of your comfort zone to go back & discover your ROOTS. It takes strength to do that. I'm actually moving back to VN soon so I'm super thrilled about it. It's been a long journey for me not going back after 30 years, but once I was there within 2 months, I felt like I was finally home. Thanks Van for capturing this story. Thanks for sharing, Hanna~!
This is a great story and I am sure will become one of your most popular videos Miss Van. While the history is sad... the story is indeed great because of how positive this sweet young lady is. Hanoi is truly a fascinating city too and Miss Hanna seems to have really found her own way and realize the good side of things. While still rather hard to enter Vietnam it is fairly easy to leave and so the fact that Miss Hanna remains is because of her own desire. As mentioned before to you I am an American married to a Vietnamese I married in NYC in 1977 but who has been living in Vietnam nearly all of the past 30+ years together with my wife. And even during the lockdowns we feel ok with things and feel safe. I am retired now but when I was working... I was a risk management consultant. Having been involved in that line of work I developed a sixth sense about risk and for better or for worse I see potential risk immediately. Please... ride the motorbikes with long pants and long sleeves and with a proper helmet. I hope you both (MIss Van and Miss Hanna) stay in Vietnam to share your American experiences with people here and to share the joy that both of you exude. :-)
I would like to add: Never ride alone in big Cities in VN ; need to have a friend sitting behind to observe and seriously considering the surrounds and nearby bike Riders as there had been many situation where your hand/wrists could be chopped off as they saw you wearing gold Bracelets etc.. Your friend sitting behind could give you a second pairs of eyes...alerting you things going to turn bad /sour...LDB AUSTRALIA
Hanna, your story is very inspiring, and congratulations for uniting with your family! I was from Hanoi as well and was adopted to the U.S 26 years ago! I do hope to return to Hoabinh, Lacson in a few years to do volunteer works and teach English as a way to give back while I am off from teaching in the summer. Congrats, again, Hanna, and I wish you the very best!
This is an excellent video about your awesome friend. She speaks English very fast but the miracle is that I can understand everything even if I use to speak French where I live.
We have a Vietnamese girl on the local news. Her name is Chinh Doan in Tulsa and I believe she was adopted. It would be interesting if you could talk to her and get her story too.
very inspiring. I definitely relate with her when she mentioned how back home (in the U.S.) she knew her way around easily and her focus was solely career wise and how to hit another milestone in life, which can be extremely exhausting for anyone. I'm glad that she's where she wants to be and having fun doing what she can while digging deeper in her roots. you go girl!
This girl seems to be a better youtuber than any other foreigner and Viet here in Vietnam and overall a great speaker..where did she get this kind of "experience" , does she have a channel ? She got a bright future as streamer
What a beautiful wonderful young woman. I want to adopt a Vietnamese woman around 55 years old or younger. LOL Vietnam appears to be a more beautiful version of Thailand, which I have 13 months of experience living in. I can't imagine Hanna going back to Chicago. Great video, thanks.
Inspiring and very well done video. You did a great job directing! I’ll share this with a co-worker who flew to Hanoi to pick up a 7 year old girl many years ago. This adoptee, now happily married and a mother of 2 boys, wished to know more about her root. Thank you again for this wonderful video!!!
Great unique content to your channel and awesome to hear of Hanna's journey. You should totally impart some of your UA-cam expertise and help Hannah setup her own since she looks so natural on camera like yourself.
What a great story. That young lady is switched on has not let adversity get in her way. Good luck to her and her future. Great idea for a feature story. Hope to see more similar
Watching the clip from Dallas where it’s in the winter and longing for a bowl of 🍜 but could settle for bún chả Hà Nội. Beautiful story from Hanna and wish her all the best for her new life in VN.
Thanks for doing this. It hits closer to hm myself. My cousin is adopted but he was given to my family by the neighbors and I grew up with him, knowing how euro Asian he looked. He was the more handsome one because he looked different and all the elders favoured him. They knew he was adopted but us kid did not. It was not until we were in our 30s that we found out the truth. Non of us went back to Vietnam till we were in our 30s. Like Hanna, he was able to reconnect with his folks n family. The thing with adoption sometimes is to protect the child's interest or maybe the adopted parents would afraid to lose their adopted child thus why they be holding out vital information. I was raised in my cousin's household and lived my life like he was my brother n I even called his mom, my aunt as mom. She was hiding me from my mom side of the family in fear of losing me to the in-law. I only once was able to reconnect with my mom side in Denver Colorado just once in my life. We lost touch once again. Hanna needs her own UA-cam. She is Wonderful in her presentation especially when she goes "let's go". Between van n her, she won hands down in the English department. I lived most of my life in the states and even myself can not flow like the way she flows. I too left VN when I was 3 n only 2 years of learning viet? I'm impressed. I too did not get a chance to see my mom as I lost her when I was born in 76. I was fortunate to be adopted by my aunt, my dad's sister. Overall, this video episode speaks volume to myself. One advice to Hanna though. Don't get a bf for it may ruin things lol
I ain't even gonna go past the first seconds before liking this video. I am a sucker for these kind of videos of adoptees going back to their birth-homes. :')
It’s indeed a tragedy for a young child to be separated from her birth family. It’s not easy to find and united with the family again in consideration of the distance geographically and psychologically, and the cultural differences as well. Hanna must have a poignant moment when she saw the persons and stuffs in her connection before she was five. A touching story ! Wish Hanna all the best in her new life ahead in the country which she should have been brought up 21 years ago. 🙏
I really like this new content from you. Keep it up. I’ll be going on a similar journey as hers next year. My partner and I will leave our corporate careers to explore Vietnam and re-discover the culture.
Thankyou for a great video , both you girls share a great beauty and of culture I hope Hannah finds her place which I know she will as she strives to learn bless you both
This is a wonderful video and thank you for putting it together human interest stories around the world showing that good people can come together to maximize life’s great adventure
This was really inspirational. Hannah is a very impressive young lady. I hope you invite her back to catch up in the future.
She is amazing! And yes I will, thank you for watching :))
