These are the BEST Tips I've seen for taking care baby pileas because you actually demonstrate it visually and you manage to salvage it after. At least I don't need to imagine or guess if only by just describing the process.
Hi I really want to thank you, my big pilea was dying of pests. Then I propogated just on time with the help of your video and I now have a beautiful plant again!
So.. It's not the actual roots that can't handle being in water if they have already have a root ball. The problem is that you have the dirt clump in with it. You need to decide between a clean water method, or a soil method. The plant cannot survive in overly wet soil. The roots will start to rot immediately, and that's exactly what you're doing if you keep the soil around it while immersing in water. It's probably easier to just plant it if it's well enough along. Otherwise, gently wash all the dirt off and use the water method
Aaaah this is so good thank you for showing weeks later! I've just seperated mum from established babies, and was worried about them not going into water first, but they have roots, so glad I went straight to soil! :)
I would think that rather than the soil grown-roots having a hard time adjusting to the water, the problem was that the soil constantly soaked in water were suffocating the roots within the ball
Wow! Just bought a few from Holland this vid was super useful. Just separated it. I got 2 for 81 dollars and each pot had 2 babies each, now I have 6 pilea sand there are new babies! Also maybe you should try doing time lapse videos! Especially on the pileas! Would love that! And I’m pretty sure others would do to!
Ok I propitiated a Pilea from two separate mother leaves (with part of the stem too). One has like 10 tiny baby leaves but almost no roots; the other has a decent amount of roots but no leaves. When do I plant them into soil????
Thanks for sharing your experiences with these plants. I noticed many of your "mother" pilea peperomioides' leaves are cupped/curled. Google it and you can see lots of reasons offered why this sometimes happens. Also, regarding your soil mix, you may wish to experiment with using perlite (which lightens the soil) instead of vermiculite, which holds water. I think PPs prefer soil on the drier side.
Thank you so much for such a thorough and informative video!!! so excited for my home to be overtaken by my Pilea!! also why do I feel like I’m in love with you after watching this...
I failed an english college course 3 times, so dont expect me to be strong in that department lol. I blame the early morning start time tho, anyways, thanks for watching!
That was the smoothest way I have ever heard someone flexing that they were on vacation Jk love'd the video, gotta a bunch of babies around the house 🤙👌
Great ! I have question. I have in water a main stem with only one large, healthy leaf. After roots development, 2pups have started growing underwater between the roots. I can see that another 2 will pop up too. What should i do? Wait longer in water so pups will grow bigger and be able to remove them? Transfer it in soil as it is now with pups under soil?
as long as nothing is rotting you can leave it in the water for a while longer, but it would be ok to burry under the soil a little bit. they start under and pop up anyways so its normal for them
Great video! Question though; do you need to replace the water that the babies are propagating in? or do you just keep filling it up as the water level lowers?
Personally I just keep topping it off, but its probably much safer to replace the water in order to get rid of fungus and other things that could cause rotting.
A friend gave me a cutting that doesn’t have any roots. It almost looks like a leaf with a long stem. I’m not very knowledgeable about plants and I’m afraid it won’t propagate. Do you have any tips?
The soil still on the roots of the ones in water is what made them rot. If you’re gonna propagate in water you have to remove all the soil off the existing root system.
Hi, Thanks for the great video. I propagated a few babies (before watching your video) and although I'm keeping them alive, they don't seem to be growing either. I'm wondering if the pots are too small (I used tiny 2.5in pots). My large pilea doesn't produce as many babies as yours either (but I read that they slow down in the winter months, so maybe that's part of the problem.). Any suggestions on how to get the babies growing faster? Also, can you explain in more detail why you can't put the babies in a permanent pot initially. Thanks:)
You do know that it's your fault that the ones with the root ball rotted, right? You can't just put them in the water without removing all the soil! THAT'S why the root ball rotted! Roots can't survive in SOGGY SOIL and you basically just shoved the roots into the wettest mud ever bc you didn't remove the soil. They would have done excellent if you'd removed the soil.
Techplant that’s naughty lol! Pileas are one of the few plants at home I haven’t propagated and idk why! They are so dang beautiful I wouldn’t mind if they took over my home
I know this video's from 2018 but I have 4 plants in pot that could be the mother of the 2 babies i have because my aunt planted the 4 of them that way a few years or so ago
You should remove as much soil as possible before water propagation. The soil is what is killing the roots when you transfer the babies into water because of bacteria and fungus.
I think the one that has root died because you did not clean it , before you put it in the water make it sure there’s no dirt or soil , otherwise it will really rot cuz the water is contaminated from the soil . Speaking from my experience 😉
Never tried it, i would imagine a diluted amount could do good things? my fear is that salts and other "things" could plug up cut that roots could otherwise process. Ill try and experiment on my next batch.
Ax I believe those are springtails ( I found a few in my pilea soil too). They aren’t harmful in small numbers and actually eat decaying roots and fungi
are you over watering them? i usually feel my leaves, when they loose the stiffness and start to feel floppy i give them water, they are pretty drought resistant so dont be afraid to let the soil get dry
The plants are growing and SO FAR we haven't killed them. Keep your fingers crossed! Miss you, Mom
how sweet
Thanks mom, miss you too!

Hello from South Korea! I am watching this in England. I bought mine 7 months ago and it's doing so so well! excited to propagate it.
Thanks for watching! Good luck with propagation

Your plants are doing so well. Love the experiments.
Thanks so much 😊
Another great video. I am definetly keep this in mind when harvesting my peperonis. I will have them everywhere! Thanks for the advice

Thanks for your comparison videos. They’ve helped so much 😊
I'm so glad!
Wow thanks. My plant hasn’t multiplied for some reason. It’s all just growing off the center. Hope it’s fine to grow just from the stem.
Give it time and some fertilizer, it might need some more energy to start sending shoots out!
Good to know where to cut and water/soil both OK for rooting! Thanks!
Thanks for watching
I need an update on the babies!!! Please:)
Wow, it is kind of a useful video to plaint! thank you!
Oooh, u can bring cool plants too:)
An awesome how-to video, thank you. Your videos are always so informative and cover all the bases.
This was a GREAT video ! Thank you!
Thanks for watching
I am amaze coz you can see these plants anywhere, actually these are not plants here but only a weeds
do you live in china? I think thats where they are from
Very informative - thank you!

@@spambotful Don't get mad. Stay positive!
You should try using clay balls, they can help roots develop and help with the transition to soil
interesting, ill look into it
That's what I was thinking of doing. Using leca and fertilizer

Have you tried propagating them in leca?
gd demo
Did you post an update on how the babies did when you came back from Korea?
yeah i have a few pilea videos since then!
A leaf fell off my pilea. Just a single leaf, will it grow roots if I put it in water?
It will grow roots but many people say it wont grow a plant, im not sure i havent left it long enough
Did you try it out? I had the same thing happen to mine and I'm wondering if it will work!
Do you have the mother plant under a grow light? If so, which light and what cycle? Thanks!
yup, maybe about 15 hours a day
A friend gave me a cutting that doesn’t have any roots. It almost looks like a leaf with a long stem. I’m not very knowledgeable about plants and I’m afraid it won’t propagate. Do you have any tips?

Util they get some roots i wouldnt put them in a pot. But if they have some roots you can put them in whatever pot you like!
What type of water is best to use while watering and propagating them ?
I just used tap water, its probably best to let it sit for 24 hours so the chlorine leave the water.
How often should one change the water for the babies?
8:43 So many BUGS crawling around in the soil! Are those bad or are they harmless?
Just harmless soil mites
At 10:12 the roots in the jar on the far right looks like there’s a skull in there 😱😂
lol it does! Spooky
How often do you need to change the water when the babies are inside the bottle to grow water roots?
Hey awesome vid, but where is the link u said would be in here somewhere
Can I cut the stem too short? She’s sitting in water now for a week and her leaves are turning black, and I feel I failed at cutting the baby
How often did you change out your water?
I just added water as it evaporated. Wouldn't recommend that bad behaviour but it worked for me
Techplant that’s naughty lol! Pileas are one of the few plants at home I haven’t propagated and idk why! They are so dang beautiful I wouldn’t mind if they took over my home
Great Video!!! Thanks a lot :)
Nice video! I have a couple of questions though, What type of light do you give these plants? What type of temperature do you give your Pilea?
They are under grow lights that are about 25ish TRUE watts, and they sit in room temperature, about 72-75
I know this video's from 2018 but I have 4 plants in pot that could be the mother of the 2 babies i have because my aunt planted the 4 of them that way a few years or so ago
Very cool! I hope you can get another generation out of them!
Techplant Thanks! I hope so too. Oh I meant to say 4 plants in 1 pot
When you root the baby in water - how often do you change the water?
never unless it gets really funky and a film on top. otherwise i just top off
@@TechplantChannel Thank you!
Is it good to do this to all baby plants and not only pilea, i.e putting all babies in water first to grow more roots before planting it in soil?
Not succulents
Hello, new to your channel.
Jenita Lovingit!! Thanks for watching, hope you like the videos so far
No need for rocks at the bottom if you have good drainage
You should remove as much soil as possible before water propagation. The soil is what is killing the roots when you transfer the babies into water because of bacteria and fungus.
yeap, found that out the hard way
My pilea plant is not producing any baby plants. Any tips?
Do you sell your plants?
My plant doesn’t have babies at all. Idk why. It’s just 1 long neck plant for 1 year now so idk where to get the babies to propagate
What if you accidentally snap off a couple stems, can those grow roots when propogated in water?
i need to do some tests. I have rooted them but havent seen new growth, but other species that are related can so maybe it just takes a lot of time
I think the one that has root died because you did not clean it , before you put it in the water make it sure there’s no dirt or soil , otherwise it will really rot cuz the water is contaminated from the soil . Speaking from my experience 😉
yeap 100% why it did that
Can u add fertilizer in water

Will plastic containers work for pilea plant
Yes it will
just remember plastic doesnt breath as much so watch your watering
