Dude. Did it, and it worked. 8 bucks for the belts (amazon). Thank you. I'M STOKED. Has worked flawlessly for over 20 years and just stopped. Did the repair with all 375 CD's still in there. Your tutorial was perfect.
By far, the best video on how to change the 2 belts. Very clear and concise. I did it myself and I cannot believe it worked. It saved the xmas holidays by filling the house with holiday music and cheer...
I'm glad I found this video. The other videos I watched had me reaching in and trying to squeeze my hands in tight spaces. This method was very straightforward and easy. Thanks.
Great video and the best one I could find on UA-cam to replace the belts on my 400 CD Sony CDP CX455. The tutorial made it easy to follow. Thank you thank you. 😀
Thank you for this video Spencer! My Sony DVP-CX985V 400 cd player wouldn’t turn nor would the door open, so your video helped us open it and we saw the belts were broken! I just ordered a set from you - hoping we can get it to work! It was made in February 2004! Appreciate you and hoping we can get it working again, such a handy device! 🤞
Bought some Sony replacement belts, followed your instructions, used some common sense & voila - job done. Can't thank you enough as I really thought it was unrepairable!
Thanks for the tutorial! Just replaced mine on my progressive scan DVD version. There were so many more i/o jacks and a ton more screws to take off to remove the back plate. Fun lining everything back up (there was a floating panel for the remote code switch assembly). 5 minutes to remove covers, 2 minutes to replace belts, 15 minutes to re-assemble, LOL!
Thanks for your video. It gave me the confidence to fix mine yesterday after sitting broken for 10 YEARS! The kit I ordered had two thicker (cross-section would look like a square) and one slightly longer belt with a smaller diameter and appeared to have a rounded cross-section. I am thinking that is for the front door, which I did not replace because it's still working and it appears that I would have to remove the carousel to access it. That was probably a mistake though, based on the horrible condition of the other old belts. They had both fallen off and had turned to an unbelievable gooey substance that looked like black licorice but was incredibly fragile when touched-basically had become a belt-shaped semi-liquid. If you have ever used Blackjack roof sealant on a roof (it's a black tar-like substance in a can), it is about as messy as that. But instead of needing paint thinner or acetone, etc. to remove Black Jack, this black goo that was formerly a belt can be removed (thankfully) with standard isopropyl rubbing alcohol. The IP alcohol did not hurt my nylon pulleys. It was a VERY tedious job and I used cotton swabs, eyeglass cleaner towelettes from packets (also containing IP alcohol), paper towels, and a set of Channellock brand pick tools. I'm now thinking that it would be very smart to immediately replace the belts if they break, or at least get them out of there until you can find new belts because they literally DISSOLVE! I had 400 CDs in my tray and I removed 1/4 of them on that side you showed to allow access. And if not for the belts dissolving, I could have easily replaced the belts from there. However, for access to clean the pulleys I had to remove both back sections-the one with the RCA plugs and optical plug is the most involved. Just take your time, keep the screws together in separate plastic snack bags. Remove your CDs in order. It helps putting them back if you can have someone write down the slot number and CD title as you remove them. Also, although I feared I might have screwed up the CD-to-screen title synchronization when I had to lift the carousel gear away from the gear of the pulley to turn it around to clean the goo out, happily it did not affect it, so no worries. I am now listening to my glorious CDs, many fine ones that I had forgotten I had. After listening to horribly low 128 and even 256kbit/sec bitrate online streaming on my computer played through my stereo, the superior CD sound quality through the same amp and speakers is simply astounding. No other word describes it.
Thanks for sharing this tutorial I was able to fix mine If I may, there were 10 screws actually on my CDP Cx450 Also you really can’t take the left piece comparent because there are wires that prevent this Also while in there one might as well change the belt of the CD mechanism Also why is it that your kit is 40 bucks when a lot of 3 belts can be found much cheaper ? Thank you anyways
I keep seeing videos on replacing the (2) Belts as you did here, but isn't there a third belt for the door and how do you get to it to replace it?? ~~~ I just bought a 455 that was NOS. Plugged it in tonight and the door won't open. Solid blue light and it comes on when plugged in, but cannot turn it off with the switch. I am lost... What do you suggest??? I did open it up and see the 2 belts are simply broke and the one to the left was kind of melted into the large pulley groove. It was like trying to remove tar, but extremely sticky tar..
Nice vid I subbed, I may be doing this on my sony cx- 455....have to make sure though, mine works fine but squeaks LOUD when the carousel rotates would that be the belt? If so I'll order a belt kit from the site you listed and get after it :)
Squeaking can be a couple of things. It could be the belt, the motor or one of the carousel wheels could be broken. A visual check should give you an idea of if it is the belts or the wheel. The belt should fit well and not sag or stretch. The wheels can be checked by looking underneath the CD player. You should see 5 matching yellow clips. They should all be fully intact, if one is broken, you will want to replace it. I hope this makes sense, let me know if not.
GREAT VIDEO!! THANKS.......But I took all the discs out.....BUT NOW HOW DO I GET THE DIGITAL READ OUT TO WORK??? It used to name the disc, song name etc. Now I only have the number it is at.!!! Help!!!

I have one Sony BDP-CX960 that supposedly to have three, not two belts. Any suggestion on how to replace them? I searched the entire UA-cam, but unable to find any pertinent uploads for reference. Hope you or any UA-camrs can assist. Many thanks in advance🙏
@@SilencioFilm After spending countless hours, I was able to replace the two “main” belts. And very lucky that the player now working, so I don’t have to fooling around with the more challenging third one, at least for now. You know, I don’t understand why Sony would use rubber belts that melted away through times. It was time consuming just to clean up the mess before putting in the new belts. Good lucky to you!
The belt is there for a reason so it is important to replace it. If the belt looks like the rest in this unit he demonstrated I would replace that belt too. The belts in most Sony CD and tape deck units of this era all turn to goo and stretch. Replace the belt or your CD's will get stuck inside.
@@stvlu733 Thanks. I replaced these belts a few months ago, and went ahead and replaced the carousel belt too. It came with the belt kit, and it took about 10 seconds to swap out. I'm not sure why you wouldn't replace it.
How about the issue with the door getting stuck and wont open or close easily? Is there a belt that drives the opening and closing of the door as well?
@@allanreyes5587 You need to replace the door belt. Most don't do this because it's hard to get to.or it just seems that way. It is slipping because it's stretched out and causing the door to move sluggish. This requires you to remove the rotating tray. It's underneath the tray.
My CDP-CX450 does NOT give any kind of error on the display, the turntable simply won't spin. I wonder if mine has other issues as well, like a bad sensor or something. Does it always display an error when belts are bad???
My jog/dial button on 200cd player isn’t working properly. When the door is open it won’t spin the carousel around properly. It will actually move it sometimes back and forth or the reverse direction of what it’s supposed to go and doesn’t move very far either. Otherwise the player will play the discs fine. Any suggestions ?
Code 32 means it needs belts? Turns on and stays on menu screen for a few minutes until it displays error code (C 32 00) and then turns off. During this time it makes a noise towards the rear of the unit and none of the buttons function or door
wondering if anyone ran into this...replaced the belts, tested it with the outsides off, worked perfect. Put it back together and then it woldn't work. Carousal kinda tried to get to the disc but just rocked back and forth. Door opens fine but the carousal doesn't stop going back and forth. Took it apart again, connected it via optical and now it works perfect. Gonna try to super carefully put it back together but was wondering if a known issue.
think i found it. Theres the little silver metal plate just behind the "control A1" input (whatever that is). I think its to seperate the back plate and the circuit board. Anyways, it was loose and saw some sparks from that area. it must have been touching the circuit board when loose. Thinking its for shipping to to keep them seperated. So I removed it. working perfectly again.
ewwwe, just saw that you demonstrated that is needs to be slid back into the rear panel. Hopefully it being removed doesnt cause any more issues. I think im done taking it apart.
Or you can use rubber bands and replace them every two weeks. I’m serious rubber band really do work. You must take the back covers off if the discs are still in it. The originals lasted 21 years and just got stretched out. They started to fail ten years ago. I wanted this thing all through high school and college. I finally got my own house and bought one. Then immediately iPods and MP3 players hit so yeah I didn’t use it much. But now my 14 year old son thinks it’s cool so I had to get it working.
You can purchase the belts at this link. spencertified.com/products/replacement-belt-kit-for-sony-400-and-300-disc-cd-players-miscellaneous-spencertified
Good luck replacing the third belt. You have to take all the discs out with a ton of parts to get to it. it is really necessary to replace this or your CD's will be locked inside. Never force the door. This will damage the cog. Getting the belts on this is from the back is kind of tricky. I did mine without removing any of those panels because I'm good at it. This saves me a lot of time.
@@stvlu733 The door on mine kept getting stuck - wont open or close on its own without me giving it a little push. Do you know of a fix in this situation?
