    Your ability to get these motors SO clean is truly impressive. I agree that this is absolutely essential to avoid getting debris where it could do some real damage, so it really pays to be methodical and very, very patient.

      thank you mysticapprentice. Unfortunately, the "myth" is that working on engines is dirty, filthy work. IMHO, that's the wrong perspective. A long time BMW mechanic who became a long time friend, worked in his shop with a bow tie and white lab coat on. That's when it dawned on my that good work comes from keeping things clean. 🙂

    You made the same mistake as I did: The new seal should NOT be lubricated with oil before it goes in. After installing I got leaks and then found out word on the street is to NOT use oil with this new type seal. Or am I wrong?

      noefkie, I did not oil the teflon lip of the seal. I only lubed the outside rubber of the seal so it would slide into the bore easily. You are correct that the teflon lip should be kept dry so it will seal on the guide ring.

      ​@@BrooksAirheadGarage Thx for your reply! I discussed this case with my friend and you did it 100% right! We also lubricated the inner part, what was common with the older model seal. With the newer model this changed and we sadly did not know this while installing! But after some leaking it is suddenly dry now. How did you found out about this?

      @@noefkie There is a BMW Service Information (SI)N notice about the new seal and it says you don't lubricate it since it is Teflon. I verified that with an independent BMW mechanic I know.

      Over time, the oil will wear away under the lip of the seal and then the seal will mate with the surface of the guide ring and seal against oil leakage
