Buttigieg is always prepared. I’m guessing after reading a bunch of these comments not of lot of people actually watched the video. I just had a conversation with an old friend how everyone was freaking out when carbonators were being replaced by fuel injectors (worked in the automotive industry at the time). Then he one upped me by telling me how everyone was freaking out when unleaded gas was replacing leaded gas. And now people are freaking out that EVs are replacing gas. In 20 years, nobody will care about this topic anymore. History sure repeats itself….

In the 1970s when fuel prices were rising fast, Japanese cars were becoming popular in the USA. There were people in the 70s and 80s that were "buy American" and "only traitors don't buy a car made in the USA". Many of those same people, if still alive, are driving Japanese cars and trucks.
I see EVs every day now. They're not all Teslas.

Why should taxpayers be forced to subsidize the development of charging infrastructure? As with gas stations/ rest stops private enterprise has developed a system that supports the needs of the driving public.
Opposition to EVs is 100% partisan and irrational. Drive one. They're indisputably better. If we spent 1/10th on EV infrastructure that we spend on oil, they'd also be more affordable and as convenient.
Having your EV not start in cold weather, and if it does start having the car lose much of its range (and age more quickly) isn't a partisan concern. There's a reason why Hertz is selling its fleet of 30,000 EVs and replacing them with traditional cars. I could list several other EV problems, but I'll spare you. @barbaracochran9266 Norway, one of the coldest nations on Earth has a strong EV base and new car sales are over 91% EV. If it is cold enough that your EV won't start, your ICE won't start either.
Range loss in extreme cold is equally an issue for ICE engines; that one is a wash.
As for Hertz, they made several mistakes; their issues however were not issues with customers dissatisfied with EVs.
The vast majority of anti-EV arguments are easily resolved with a few minutes' reading.

My EV costs 3.4 cents per mile, and requires no oil changes. This is roughly equivalent to buying gas at $0.74 per gallon. My wife and I (we own 2) have been to 17 states and have never once been unable to find a charger. Often, the car is finished charging before we finish lunch while on trips, and at home they charge at night once a week when there's plenty of capacity.

40% of US power comes from renewable sources, and growing fast. Even under the current mix, EV’s cut CO2 emissions in half compared to ICE vehicles.

But the fact that the 40% includes nuclear and hydro doesn’t change the fact that EV’s are twice as efficient from a carbon emissions standpoint. And the energy input to manufacture batteries is far less than the energy used to drive a gas car.

And btw, you only need to extract about 10 kg lithium one time for the entire life of the EV, while an ICE vehicle requires 54 kg of gasoline every time you fill the tank. And did I mention that lithium can be recycled?

This is the reality, not your pie-in-the-sky ramblings. Perhaps you should also spend some time trying to understand energy density which would tell you another reason why EVs are an inferior design compared to ICEs and hydrogen vehicles.

Um...you do remember it was regulations that reduced acid rain and the ozone depletion right? After political debate and public pressure on representatives, changes were made to regulations to reduce the pollution from harmful industries. Just like the current reduction in carbon emissions. Pretty much the exact same thing, just this one is harder to solve because it is against the most powerful industry on the world making them lose revenue so there is a lot of money to fight change.

My EV can drive for three hours to charge at highway speed? At a DCFC I can fill up in 25 minutes. I fail to see this as an issue. Infrastructure will improve. Charging times will only get lower. Look up what fuel stations were like in early 20th century.

Pete is an EV salesman. If EVs are so great why are they so reliant on government subsidies? Very low ROI in terms of dollars to climate outcome. If you are serious about climate change it is one of the least impactful investments you can make. I work for a county government. We received ARPA funding to install 100 EV charging stations... we installed 6 and ran out of money....
What TYPE / level of chargers did you install? Your assertions do not make sense if you do not specify the Type of charger. The vague lack of important details sounds like a fabricated story to me.
Lithium is a rare mineral. It's actually the 25th most common element on earth, but, when it's found it's always in very small amounts. It takes a LOT of mining to unearth the mineral for use in batteries. Small tech like phones and such take about a gram of Lithium while EV's take a whopping 10kg to produce. Estimates put the world supply of Lithium to be depleted in about 70 years at current mining rates. Then, as demand and production of EV's climbs (not that it will), that will shorten the expectancy.
EV's are not the future. They're dangerous, cost consuming to own (vs. gas powered), and the current U.S. power grid cannot sustain millions of EV's; it can't even sustain current EV numbers. Also, the U.S. is 3rd in Lithium rich reserves which means that sooner or later, the U.S. will be dependent on other nations to supply this mineral. Then, there's the environmental issues associated with mining this mineral. One just doesn't bend over and scoop it off the ground. It's inside of rocks, in the earth's crust and even in the oceans. This translates to expensive and intrusive mining and strip mining of the earth to obtain it. With environmentalists so concerned about 'climate change' and harming the earth, why are they so quick to turn to an expensive and rough, crude extraction?
So in summary, switching entirely over to EV's is not just unfeasible, it's downright impossible? Not to mention the amount of time it would realistically take for the US to switch to it (which is more than likely WELL beyond the supposed timetable the administration wants)?

I wish I could replace our gas vehicle with a second EV. Our EV is so great and traveling in it has been easy so far. For an 8 hour round trip from Baltimore to Richmond starting at 100% battery life, we usually only need to charge twice (and can usually use the same charging station - once on the way and once on the way back).
People claiming domestic EV production failing using anecdotes from Ford or Chevy forget that Tesla is a US car producer. Further, nearly 100% of the components in a Tesla are produced in the the USA. For other manufacturers (Ford, Chevy) that value is 50% at best. In other words, US EV production is doing fine, if you look at ALL US EV manufacturers.
Pete brings the facts. So many good people have been misled about EV's they just have no clue what's coming.

Most EV miles are fueled by home charging. Charging stations free people to travel farther from home. Charging stations shouldn't need subsidies in cities because they give businesses opportunity for a sale.
Our current electrical grid is barely able to handle the current load, let alone when there are environmental changes that affect the amount of electricity being used. Could someone PLEASE ask “Pothole Pete” HOW they plan on powering these charging stations when most utilities are asking their customers NOT to charge their EVs during heat waves because of the draw of power from the grid; likewise HOW is “Pothole Pete” is going to deal with the FACT that very cold weathers reduces the efficiency of lithium ion batteries to the point where they will NOT charge in subzero F weather?

Charging takes too much time. Lithium batteries are old school.
Something more efficient than petrol. Charging is a step backwards
There are several measures of efficiency. Charging time is considered one of the least important.
Some others are:
Cost per mile
Carbon emissions per mile
Maintenance downtime
Infrastructure requirement for energy distribution
Energy per mile
Maintenance cost
Most of these the efficiency of an EV kicks the arse of fuel cars.
So it takes a bit longer to charge, most people can charge when they are doing something else.
Where is the power coming from? Shouldn't they renew the power infrastructure before installing charging stations?
My question is if the battery for an electric vehicle is upwards of 20 to 40 thousand dollars, and if you purchase one for 100 thousand and keep it for 5 to 7 years until title needs a battery, what are you going to get for it when you go to sell or trade it?
stop with the absurd LIES! The WARRANT on most EVs is 8 Years. The reason why the OEMs give an 8 Year warranty is because they not very few battery packs will fail between 5-7 years. If it fails on the 7th year you just claim warrant repair for it.

There are legitimate concerns of course, but at the end of the day the market share of EV’s is growing slowly but surely, and the infrastructure will eventually catch up. People act like we can’t add to the power supply. Or that the government is days away from bulldozing your local gas station.
I fear the winter in the Northeast when 1,000’s of EV cars stop working in a blizzard on the freeway. The lower temperature will decrease the amount voltage and wattage produced. Then the poor owners will be stuck in place and unable to turn on the heat to keep themselves warm in a blizzard!! Who know how many could be saved??

It is all about education. People seem to not know the truth about EVs and are afraid to learn. Tesla has a charger around 150 miles from each other so no one should have a problem. Also if you have power at home you can easily charge at home. Doug Lamalfa needs accurate info. Current ev owners do not want to switch back.
That statistic stood out to me, too. Maybe 1/2 of 1% of EV owners, but not half overall. Tesla (as of a few years ago, admittedly) had the highest brand loyalty of any car company, EV or ICE
This is the problem. This is a government-created industry, and not a private industry, which would run more cost efficiently. The government just throws money at it with no metrics to guide it. Plus, the people running the government are not qualified to run a business in the industry. They did the same thing with Solindra and solar panels. EVs are future fabulous (I own a 13 year old Nissan Leaf still going strong for around town only 25 mile range left) but the long range EV transition which is going quite well actually, needs to be incrementally smarter and more cost manageable to bring in the next generation of EV adopters, and not just remain with the early enthusiastic adopters with deep pockets...🤔

Just another conman…Billions for future charging stations when latest technology is all ready moving away from electric vehicles. Hydrogen powered vehicles are in the works at this time. Honda leading.
Hydrogen vehicles are moronic at best, at worst the greenwashing of the petroleum industry trying to keep us burning their products.
Most of the world's hydrogen comes from methane natural gas so the petroleum industry is promoting the heck out of it.
When you consider how inefficient it is to transport, store and use hydrogen we would need a lot more of it than gasoline for the same number of miles.
And hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are essentially electric vehicles, so they still need the big battery and other rare materials for the fuel cell. Nothing saved there, basically combining the worst parts of EVs with the worst parts of fuel cars. Direct hydrogen combustion is no better as it is even less efficient requiring even more hydrogen.
Current hydrogen vehicles are higher emismtting than gas/diesel vehicles when you consider how the hydrogen is made, stored and transported. And more expensive than both EVs and Gas vehicles to make and operate.
Sorry we should stick to gas vehicles, as we transition to EV. Still the best options.

If I start a policy that requires action from states in year 20, with a "build this by year 30" clause, which requires the states to figure our sourcing materials, sealing contracts with builders, and generally _logistics_. Obviously there is going to be a ramp up time to get to full production. They're guessing that's how long such a ramp up will take to peak.
You can't just start conjuring charging stations at a constant rate on day 1.
