In this lead guitar lesson, I'll show you the three most useful guitar scales. All of these scale shapes are based on the major scale, and they're perfect for improvising guitar solos, writing songs, coming up with your own riffs, and jamming along to songs. This concept of connected scales is based on something I like to call the "homebase" which gives you a comfortable shape that can be shifted around the fretboard to play in any key. If you've mastered the scales in this lesson, you can check out the video below to learn more about building a homebase on the guitar. Thanks for watching!

You are the best guitar teacher! I have been stuck in the pentatonic scale for the last 10 years! Until I found your channel. Im fishing for my own food now, thanks!
Amazing! And thank you so much for the kind words ☺🙏
I agree.... I love learning new things.... every day 😊
Do you have chart for this somewhere?
@@michaelwas8549 I put all the graphics from my lessons over on my Patreon if that’s what you’re looking for.
DUUDE!!!! Finally!! This is all clicking for me!!! Holy crap, played for like 3 hours tonight using these shapes!!! Amazing!! You are the best! You have a gift for teaching man!
That's so great to hear! Thanks for checking out the video ☺
Bro, no words can explain how grateful i am for you.
God bless you mate
The part about relative major at the pinky finger and relative minor at the index finger is a major help to me thanks again!
Your a great teacher on guitar, you go slow and technical. And iam finally starting to understand a little bit better,
My defaults are Dorian, Mixolidian, major, and aeolian. But I also play southern rock and a lot of Allman Brothers. You teach very good, and I even learn some from you.
A good way to learn to play melodically is to figure out vocal lines (by ear) from popular songs - This really improved my improv’ skills and is super fun.
As always, another quality lesson!
Appreciate that :)
Just discovered your channel and I’m really liking it. After being a power chord and box 1 pentatonic player for years, I’ve been taking my playing more seriously. I’m learning a hell of a lot from your channel. Thank you very much. Cheers from Australia
So glad you're enjoying the videos. Cheers!
I have been using this exact scale for a couple years now - My lead playing has improved dramatically, especially when, using this scale in the relative major key, very melodic and inspiring.
Great video as always. Thanks for the knowledge.
Great job teaching it simply, thanks man,I have already started to try and apply it already
Thanks!
Thank YOU!
Nice video! Thanks!
When I started playing guitar I memorized the Pentatonic positions and would then practice them via improvising while listening to music (e.g., Roy Buchanan) then I worked on transitioning between Pentatonic positions while improvising. I then started adding the two additional notes as per what you’re saying in this video. It has really enabled me to improvise well beyond my ~”knowledge of music theory”. You’ve brought the info together nicely in this video and added very useful information. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks as always Andrew your an inspiration 👍
Thanks so much for the teaching, sir. your videos have helped me incredibly with improving my ability and knowledge with my guitar.
You’re very welcome! 😊
Super great lesson, thanks!!
My pleasure!!
Hey Andrew, You are a great teacher! Thanks and Happy New Year!🙏🔥
Thank you! Happy New Year :)
Great job young man love your channel always look forward to your videos!
I appreciate that! Glad you're enjoying the videos :)
Nice lesson.Just having to get used to the layout.
It’s a minor scale/minor pentatonic/major hybrid scale? Interesting! I know my pentatonic scales pretty good and I’ve been playing for like 20 years I’m trying to explore my horizons and improve my solo playing
This lesson I hope very improve
why do those diagrams mess with my head so bad LOL. used to looking at it from a different perspective. love the video though!
Sorry! I've had mixed feedback on the direction for the on-screen fretboard. In my more recent videos I've switched it the other way.
You're tabs are hard to adjust to. They are literally backwards from everything I've seen.
Stand on your head then. Not hard to adjust, just think about it 😊
@@DaveKoczan That still wouldn't work.🙄
why reverse the view , it is now completly usless !
I realize for some people they prefer it the other way. But for others it's more confusing when it doesn't match the video of my fretboard above it. Then they would be going opposite directions. Sorry for the confusion!
@@andrewclarkeguitar ahhh , ok I see - thank you for the answer , perhaps just mirror flip your video after recording as if you were leftie ? anyway good luck and thanks ! your extended patterns are so helpful to join with minor scale !
Ahh, another guy who makes one read the fret board backwards. Great . Bye
