  • The Native Youth Olympics in Alaska is more than a sport. The annual event offers an opportunity for youth across the state to gather in friendly competition and compete in events deeply rooted in traditional culture. Each sporting event, such as the Stick Pull and the High Kick, traces back to a connection with hunting, fishing and overall survival.

Everything about NYO is about sportsmanship. There’s enough competitive sports out there. Living in Alaska back then was not easy. You needed team work, communication, survival skills and family. We weren’t trying to kick higher than others; we were getting our nect meal together and sharing it. There’s a story behind every event. It’s about togetherness.
