That was absolutely beautiful. What an amazing interpretation. You guys sound.
I’d like to share with you a little story about how I was introduced to John Coltrane a very long time ago.
I’m a vocalist, semi retired now,but back in the 60’s,music was exploding. Hendrix Joplin the Beatles CS&N Sly Janis Joni Led Zeppelin The Who Jethro Tull you name it,it goes on and on. Jazz was there but in the back row. Like a friend said, jazz players get paid weekly, very weakly
But the music scene was like an explosion of melodic color. Music truly hit the big time
One day I was going through used albums at a Goodwill store and came across the yellow Iron Butterfly album. I’d never heard any of their stuff all the way through so I bought it for a buck to check them out.
I get it home and the album inside is John Coltrane Live at the Vanguard. A whole side of My Favorite Things and I was hooked. Bought Giant Steps next then I got into Miles,Bird,Rollins Thelonius. Time progressed and so did mainstream sound. Went through a Birds Of Fire Neil Larson Klemmer phase but always came home to jazz and the blues.
I was too broke and lazy to learn how to play the sax or guitar,so I became a vocalist. My very best friend was a bebop prodigy that was playing with LeRoy Vinegar when he was 13. He was a musical genius that turned me onto a lot of the jazz greats I admire.
He suggested I listen and try to sing along with their solos. He would patiently sit with me and go through the fakebook. Making sure I sing the songs straight in pitch and on time. Man we’d practice for hours, days when coke came to town. Quaaludes put things on hold for awhile but hey, real Rohrers and Lemmons were as close to touching a blue note as it gets
But,I’d practice my singing with John’s solos and other peoples solos. Miles is a genius and incredibly difficult to follow. Bird is absolutely off the hook but I could feel him more than Miles, same with Trane. I had more of a connection spiritually with certain players. Like Hendrix said it’s like going to church. I definitely feel that music is what God meant when He talked about speaking in tongues. The song you all just played can be understood by every human being on the planet. It’s a wonderful gift and a perfect medium to connect our hearts to the real world
At first I was a parrot, just trying to strengthen my chops, but then it changed and I started to truly understand the feel, the message.
Anyway, one of the symptoms of old age is spouting too much information But hey,I made it when many thought I wouldn’t. Johnny Winters knew what he was talking about with Lily F40s
You and your band mates shared a really great version of one of my favorite things by John Coltrane. Thank you and please keep them coming
I’m so glad to see his music live on
