- With the anime recently reaching this scene, I thought that it'd be a good idea to go over every hint that Oda wrote regarding Kanjuro's inevitable betrayal.

When he made the ladder in Dressrosa and helped out the enemy, we thought it was a gag.
Unfortunately I still love the stupid “gags” of his through Dressrosa and Zou. Oda’s comedy is just too powerful for me.

There is a detail about the numbers of troups during the end of Act 2. I don't remember exactly how it went, but Kinemon said in the presence of Kanjuro that they had gathered 4000 men. Later on, when Kanjuro was gone, Kinemon updated the number to 4200. Yet, a bit later we see Orochi talking about how his enemy has gathered 4000 men, showing that his information was outdated and he only knew what Kanjuro knew.
Denjiro addresses this when he reveals his true identity, giving full credit to Kin's "brilliance"
As a manga reader I told anime only that the traitor was Con D. oriano before it was actually revealed

A very important hint is given when the SHs climb the elephant (zou) kanjuro drew a pink dragon(ryunosuke) to climb up (a whole episode was dedicated to that lmao) after going further in the story you'd realize no true Vassal of Kozuki Oden would ever draw a dragon that's how much they hate the creature. Kinemon sliced up a dragon in Punk Hazard not only for survival but hatred as well. He also expresses his disappointment when Kanjuro drew a dragon of all things to top it off it was pink in colour as if to mock Momonosuke.
Oh god fuck that… man that “as if to mock Momonosuke” feels so real. The disrespect feels so real. It’s making me hate Kanjuro even more.

Plus by drawing a dragon, which obviously can't fly, he slowed down Luffy and the others by a day. Allowing Jack to arrive on time.
The fact that hi is actually a really God artist but just makes this basic level draws
when they went to the bathhouse in wano, kanjuro specifically asked robin what she learned from orochi, and she basically said all she knew (which was a lot.). Kanjuro was very shocked. Also he never said what he learned to the others. Afterwards a few minutes later hawkins shows up to get the straw hats. Hawkins somehow knew the straw hats would be there and its because of kanjuro. He was told the meeting would be in the bathhouse by the straw hats and decided to let hawkins know.

It wouldn’t be weird if they sent regular Oniwabanshu or samurai to check the ankle tattoos, but the fact they sent Hawkins and Drake to do it, so they can easily recognise Nami and Robin is immediately suspicious.

During the “Raizo-dono is safe!!” reveal, Kanjuro is the only one clenching his fist. When you look at all the characters in the scene and their hands arent clenched at all, it was almost like it was deliberate hmmmm

You missed the biggest clue lol, his character design is literally that of a Kabuki ACTOR. He was acting out a character that is part of and supporting the Kozuki family and concealed his real identity, just like an actor's job. Such a big one.

The number of times he sabotaged their team “by accident”
He led Dressrosa pursuers to the king’s plateau with a “although unstable” ladder to the top.
He blinded Kinemon on the climb on to Zou and caused him to fall all the way down and “almost” knocked off the rest had they not dodged.

Another cool foreshadowing
When Oden was traveling across Wano, he was (unknowingly) recruiting the members of the Akazaya Nine. And their actions when they first meet Oden are interesting:
-Kin'emon and Denjiro tagged along because they admired Oden
-Izo and Kiku joined because they were hungry lol
-Kawamatsu, Dogstorm, and Cat Viper joined because Oden had saved them from the humans on Kuri Beach
-Raizo joined because he wanted to better himself through Oden and leave his dark past behind him
-Ashura joined because he had honorably lost a duel to Oden. Ashura never sought out to fight Oden, he had just waited for Oden to come onto his turf and tried to protect it.
The thing is Kanjuro is the ONLY member to have acted out of pure malice the first time meeting Oden, saying that he thought "they were dead bodies" trying to collect their hair by trying to kill them.
Well it was rumored that there was someone cutting hair from people in the area so it didn't seem like he was going to kill them to Oden
I only suspected when he "comically" covered Kinemons eyes when they were climbing zunisha.. I was like "wtf..why is he doing this"

My first thought about him being out of place was his introduction at Dressrosa. The guy acted like Kinemon was a complete stranger and was kinda disappointed for meeting him again. I didnt think he was a traitor, but that scene really stick with me.
EXACTLY!!! ALSO ep 694 usopp says to “kanjuro” and kinemon: “YOUR FRIEND DISAPPEARS AMD YOU WONT EVEN KNOW IT!!” When describing sugar’s ability to them. And then kinemon says to usopp: “yeah that would send chills down my spine” while kanjuro is standing there looking SUSPECT AS ALL HELL
A while ago when it was first hinted that there was a traitor on the comments of crunchyroll a "manga reader " spoiled that Raizou was the traitor, i was so pissed and every time they mentioned a traitor i got salty at Raizou and the op of the comment. I still got my plot twist. i guess, cuz it was a troll comment and it wasn't Raizou.
yeah, the 3 main traitor theories were raizo, kanjuro, and carrot. so he got you pretty good with the lie, since even raizo had some moments that made him being the traitor seem plausible.

@@seongthongchuah8356 nobody actually believed it, but in one of the volume updates (like, when Oda has some things fixed for the VOlume released. For example, Katakuri was said to have a Logia, but in the volume Jimbei said it was a "special paramecia"), the pannel in which we saw Oden castle burning during act 1 with the Calamities in the background (they weren't really there, but it was shown as to say that Kaido and his forces were behind it), it was updated and there was something like a 4th figure which resembled Carrot, or a bunny mink.
People were super confused, but they had to make sense of it

as for carrot, I don't exactly remember, there was a LOT of headcanon for that one, like, her parents were forced to work for the beast pirates or something like that. there is also the factor that some people didn't like carrot, and it was also kinda weird that a random character from zou joined the straw hats in their adventures.

This legit can be one of the top 10 anime betrayals. The buildup to the reveal really paid off.
I knew early on the rat was Kanjuro considering he was the only scabbard without a backstory and the Beast pirates knew Raizo was the only scabbard on Zou.

Kanjuro already tried killing Oden during their first meeting, before being recruited.
Joining Oden is probably Kanjuro's Plan B when his ambush will fail.
2:55 About the Bounty segment, IIRC (it has been a while since I last watched the Dressrosa arc), Kanjuro's lack of bounty is more due to him not engaging against Doflamingo's forces throughout the arc, which would tie it more closely with the Productivity aspect (3:25). Doflamingo's reason for the bounties was "against those who have angered me today."
I remember while re watching one Piece when they met up with Ninja (forgot his name) and were discussing how Momo is their Lord
Kanjuro looks away sorta like in a “he’s not my lord…” it was really interesting to see that in the animation and there’s some other times he seems shady but that could just be because I know he’s a traitor now

The very fact we knew about him should have been the first clue. Doflamingo turns his prisoners into toys causing everyone of to forget their existence. He should have done that to Kanjuro and take him out of the picture as well as get labour. If Kanjuro was not the traitor, that would have been his first cause of action.
When i found out he was the traitor, i was just lowkey kinda glad my suspicions were correct.
I thought it was a bit sus during the Dressrosa arc when they were on the plateau thingy. Kanjuro kept saying that because he was such a failure or something, he should commit seppuku.

I had a coworker/friend who watches OP. I don't like to spoil, but one day he asked me who the traitor was at the end of our shift. After asking if he really wanted to know, he sounded uncertain at first but then said yes bro please tell me.
I told him it was Okiku then left for the day LMAOOOO, there's nothing better than giving a FALSE spoiler. It made the moment that much more of a shock.
watching this video I just realized that there was a considerable time put into this character. Especially the left hand right hand drawing difference made me realize how much depth this char has.
i mean between all the akazaya members Kanjiro was the only one following Oden for a dump reason the others followed because they admired him but he followed because he wanted to make a brush from Oden's hair! really!?
In Dresdarosa, Kanjuro made ladders for the group to climb up the mountain. However, moments later, the citizens trying to catch them started climbing the same ladder. He could have disolved the drawing way before the citizens started to climb, but conveniently forgot too.
There was also the moment where Kanjuro blinded Kinemon when the monkey fell from Zou, causing them both to fall off the dragon they were riding. This could have ended very badly for Kinemon who we know is a fruit user. Looking back, it easily could have been an assasination attempt. We don't know exactly what happened after they fell, but both the sunny and Bart's ship were down there, so it could have been that they rescued them as they fell, causing the assasination on Kinemon to fail.
Everyone out here guessing the spy while I completely forgot abt that just until Kanjuro showed himself up… I’m really amazed and traumatized how he betrayed them from the beg, and after all that they’ve been through. He is a pure villain and have to say a perfect spy, with no remorse whatsoever up till his death.
one of the most important pieces is when he, kin and momo fell from the pink dragon in zou because he wanted to delay kin and momo so the minks at zou could see the SH as enemies and had a chance that they could kill each other
This proves that Oda is a genius writer.
The one I thought of was in Dressrosa, making a ladder for the former toys to hunt down those with bounties. Definitely suspicious
I'm rewatching right now and I've been looking out for these. I also noticed in Dressrosa when he draws the fake Usopp for the bagworm shot, he does it not really understanding why Usopp wants it, then seems calm while Usopp preps his shot because he doesn't think there's any way he can make it, but when Usopp succeeds he looks not just surprised by horrified that he directly contributed to taking out one of Kaido's allies.
Also, he continually delays the SH's arrival at Zou, first drawing a climbing creature instead of flying when we know he can do that. Then he covers Kin's eyes to ensure they fall. Then he draws another climbing creature, and fakes the water susceptibility (we see later that his cranes are fine in the rain). Then he suggests they wait to try again til the morning as it's getting dark (why does this matter when you're climbing a featureless leg?) Finally he makes a third climbing creature and allows them to reach the top, assuming that by this point the SH will have fallen to the gas and Sheepshead's Gifters and perhaps being aware that Jack's arrival is imminent.
The bounty one doesn't foreshadow anything he just wasn't important enough to get one and Rebecca was important
Thank you for this!! Gotta say at first I wasn't so keen on this plot twist, seemed a lil too forced especially in One Piece where things are commonly foreshadowed hundreds of episodes before. Glad to see once again Oda hinted it all along, I was just too naive to see lol
I realized it was Kajurou when Orochi said he was from a theater family, he wears theater makeup, so I remembered that he was the only one who joined the group without being called by Oden
He created a giant ladder in Dressrosa but refused to undo it when they noticed Donquixote family were coming from below.
I'm a manga reader but when I saw the anime scenes of the traitor( the one where kanjuro eats his devil fruit in front of the old lady, old guy and orochi) I thought people would figure it out as you hinted @ 4:20.

When Luffy and Doflamingo was clashing with the final blow, everyone was cheering for Luffy.
"Lucy, mugiwaraya, mugiwara, Luffy, Luffy-senpai" etc.
But Kanjuro said "please". He said so without any name, so he might have been cheering for Doffy.
I got this twist spoiled to me early because i happened on some random wiki.
Needless to say i was shocked because Konjuro and Kinemon were.2.of my favorite characters in the whole series. They 2 clueless, super proper carefree dudes that rarely get rattled by anything. I loved them.

I knew it was Kanjuro when they said his parents were actors, giving how he dresses like a kabuki character.
Also, the subtle hints that kanjurou is used to meet pirates because orochi's alliance with kaido, is when momonosuke got fight with luffy and kinemon got mad because he got disrespected by pirate, kanjurou said "the pirates doesn't care about position..." or something like that as i remember. Holy cow man, i just realized that after 10 years reading the manga. The subtle foreshadowing...
2 things that I havent seen pointed out:
1: If I remember correctly, everyone of the vassals cried when meeting again with either Momo or Kinemon (can”t remember which one), expect for Kanjuro.
2: In Dressrosa, when Usopp, Viola, and King Riku were hiding from the people trying to kill them, Kanjuro made a ladder for the enemy to climb, and it was played off as a joke, but was really him trying to stop them.
Did he or Usopp draw the Usopp used as ammunition after that moment?
@@Tehstool Usopp drew the ammunition, he just made it real. My thinking is that he probably just thought that it wouldn't really matter so he didn't think much of it and made it.

Like McGillis Fareed from Gundam IBO, Kanjuro is a tragic character. For all his treachery, he still felt bad about betraying Kin. So, it's twisted and tragic that he decided to betray the scabbards die by the hands of his 'best friend,' instead of being an actual friend. Lots of people are like that, their hate is just so strong, and scars linger in their mind, you never really know what they are thinking.
I knew it from the moment when they found him in dress Rosa and he wasn’t suffering or chained up like the others.
The fact that Kanjuro was "captured" by Doflamingo family but Kin and Momo can remember him.

I think it was a great reveal.
When it was taking Kinemon way too long to find him in Dressrosa I actually strarted thinking that he was either dead or part of Doflamingo's crew. When he eventually found him, everything about Kanjuro felt off, but I quickly got over it thanks to his cool design and ability. It wasn't until Wano that I started getting suspicious again, cause he wasn't really doing anything the whole arc. I chalked it up to it being something natural when there's too many characters. However, the scene with him carrying Yasuie's body where they just show his face as they're riding really struck me as odd. Soon after we find out there's a traitor and for me it just had to be him.

Well he is, for one thing, right handed, as evidenced by the quality of his drawings depending on what hand he uses, and he did eat that lettuce with his dominant hand... Could just be a coincidence but I could see Oda doing something like that intentionally

When they were chased by the citizens in dressrosa, (when they were going up to where the castle was)
Kanjuro draws a spider web/ladder. They all manage to climb. But he also lets up everyone who was chasing them
He just looks more like a weird one piece villain his whole set up is all the evidence you need
During Oden’s fight with Kaido, he didn’t help at all

They left such good hints that he was the traitor, i love how he consistently always had the most akward and unnatural interactions of the retainers.
One more thing:
At one point, he drew a dragon to life to mess with Kinemon. And then we find out the reason why Kin hates dragons is because Kaido, who killed Oden, is a dragon.
Wouldn't Kanjuro hate dragons too if he was truly loyal to Oden?

The moment when shinobu "don't want any debate because i'm right" theorist realized that they're actually the clown after all
Some people says that the kindness you show to a waitres/waiter or to animals is how you really are. Kanjuro just slaved animals while in his acting.
And probably when he and Kineamon fell from Zunesha, he could have been on purpose to not meet with Jack or any other Kaido's men.
In the episode where the scabbards all fight Kaido alongside Oden, there are shots of each scabbard doing a cool move and defeating a ton of Kaido's minions at once. Kanjuro got one too...but if you looked closely, you'd see that there weren't actually enemies in the frame! Kanjuro was just swinging around hos brush prentending to fight.
when they first said there was a traitor my first suspect was kanjuro because he was the least shown
I feel like the fact that Oden found him as a homeless man that murders people for their hair so he can paint was already enough of a red flag that this guy is a psycho.
The biggest give away was the information jack had. The decision to meet at zou was among raizo, kinemon, kanjuro and momo only, no one else knew. Even then the beast pirates were pretty sure of Raizo's presence on Zou. That means there is a traitor among these 4 only. It couldn't be Raizo, or momo. That means it's either kinemon or Kanjuro. And then considering how kanjuro wasn't trying to gain allies while others were working their Butt off, it became a dead give away.
Also in the last one it says Kanjuro was born in a family of theatre actors.
I was basically convinced it was him but for all the wrong reasons. And borderline all because he was comfy as hell in that cell. Sure he played it off that he hid himself in there. But he was still in that cell. So I was convinced they had got to him there. Spent the entire flashback arc in confusion but was still convinced it was him due to my own stupid logic I had put in my head probably over 100 episodes prior.
Though it probably didn’t help that Nerdcore music spoiled it a little for me. My own fault for being such a late bloomer that Wano was practically done by the time I reached it.
You also forgot how kinomon says to konjuro I’d eat the food you but my stomach doesn’t agree with it. He was probably poisoning it
Prediction : I think kanjuro will end up helping at the end after feeling bad since he been with these people for so long. If this happen remember I was here 😉

In my opinion another hint is the name: Oda likes playing with sounds and words, and the name Kanjuro sounds exactly like the Italian "congiura" and spanish "conjura", both mean "conspiracy"
In one of the anime openings, he can be seen on the left side of the screen facing the right. Typically good guys are on the right and face left. I remember noticing it and thinking it was strange but assumed nothing of it. How does Oda always make me let my guard down.
There was a couple things, but the main one I noticed was the bounty with doflamingo. You need to remember that even though kaido and orochi were working together, kanjuro works under orochi and not kaido. And I don’t really think kaido cared about orochi’s people. And to go further that especially with the bounty example you gave, doflamingo was more of a business partner to kaido rather than one of his crew or anything like that. Literally all he did was produce smile fruits for some sort of payment I assume. With this said, it’s is highly unlikely that doflamingo even knows who someone like orochi is, so forget him knowing about orochi’s men. Here’s an example of what I’m trying to say. So say you subscribe to a streamer, do you tell this streamer about you, your friend, and then about your friends friends. No, you don’t. All this really applies to all of your examples concerning dressrosa. Just don’t forget that kanjure works under orochi, not kaido.
One more foreshadowing was when orochi said that the traitor was an actor. In early era of japan stage actors used to wear hair and makeup just like kanjuro, idk what it is called since I am not from japan but I know little bit of their culture. Anyone who knows would have quickly guessed it.
Honestly, the only suspicious thing I found was the fact he didn't try to escape, and when I saw the bird that was carrying the information. Such a great twist, one piece is peak 🙏
I think another hint was when Doflamingo started placing bounties on the people who opposed him, he placed a bounty on Kinemon, but not on Kanjuro

even when Oden proclaimed 9 scabbards will come in animation only 8stars where shown as in Oden already knew someone was a traitor among them

But I got the clue that he he is traitor from orochi gave him the devil fruit and only 2 person got the devil fruit powers kinemon and konjiro so obviously it's not Kienmon so it's directs to the konjiro ✌️ I hope i got it right.
1. I started to suspect him when he didn't show crest to Minks, while Kinemon did.
2. His face looks like he is traitor (he don't show any emotion, just smiling and vibing hahaha).
3. His ability is perfect for spying.
Its kinda weird when you consider that orochi forgot he had someone on the inside. Kanjuro also time leaped but orochi thought he died in the fire with everyone else (though he had his doubts, he probably didnt count on it) Given he ended up remembering, but not until long after everyone made it to wano. My theory is that kanjuro was so goofy, doffy didnt think it was worth bringing up and left him to rot in the jail. Kanjuro was fine because he was eating cabbage (and not making an effort to escape, probably because he figured he'd be safer down there, and waiting for kinemon.
I also dont think doffy knew kanjuro was still alive when he made the bounties. Rebeccas makes sense since shes a royal.

In "Raizo is safe" scene we see every one reaction except kanjuro.
i don't know if it's really a foreshadowing but in chapter 822 when the strawhats are leaving zou kanjuro wants to "help" them to go down zuneesha. it really makes me think what could have happened if luffy didn't jump
You forgot to mention how he betrayed everyone, that was pretty clear sign he was the traitor.
See I knew it was someone close in the group and honestly at first I suspected kiku because she's one of the first 3 people met after entering wano and also not much is said about her until she finds the crew. But the other few correlations didn't really click to me at first but going back it makes sense
When Robin mentioned all the information she got in Orochi’s castle and Kanjuro said “WOW THATS A LOT OF INFORMATION”

i did not see Kanjuro as a double agent, but yet he was. very shocking when i reached that part in Wano.
I don't think Kaido knows Kanjuro is the guy. Possible that Kanjuro is acting for Orochi and only he knows about Kanjuro. So impossible for Doflamingo or anyone else to guess that Kanjuro is Kaido/Orochi's aide. Obviously, he has been deliberately underperforming when the samurai - ninja needed help, just enough to keep tagging along.
I think it's worth giving some credit to the YTer Marco One Piece Theorist for figuring this out waaay before the reveal happened in the manga. In hindsight we can piece together all the foreshadowing, but I think he did an amazing analysis with the very limited information we had at the time.
Always knew he was the traitor before the reveal. He was suspicious asf. Any anime character that looks like a clown always has to be a bad person so I was suspicious of Kanjuro. When Kaido said their was a traitor among them, that's where it clicked.
I figured it out before the reveal
not because of the hints, but because he had the least amount of focus of all the Akazaya nine in the Wano arc
You come up with all this evidence and lose because their response was:

It was shown in Orochi's flashback that the spy has eaten a devil fruit and Kanjuro being the only one who has devil fruit powers among the Akazya Nine.
That's with this kind of stuff that you start to see Oda as a god
