Message to all Emperor performers, past, present, future: You're good, kids, but as long as THIS 1964 Arrau, Haitink, CGO recording is around you're only second best. You might as well learn to live with it.
This is a superb recording. Arrau was an undisputed master in Beethoven piano music, many thought he was the best Beethoven interpreter alive. This record of Arrau with the Concertgebouw under Bernard Haitink is absolutely superb. I was lucky to hear Arrau playing the 5th in Cleveland's Severance Hall in 1973, under (possibly) Bernard Haitink who directed the Cleveland Orchestra after Szell died. It could also have been Lorin Maazel who also conducted the Cleveland Orchestra. The Cleveland Orchestra under Szell had already realized a historic rendering of the fifth playing Emil Gillels. The playing by Arrau was unforgettable. My wife and I were sitting in the last row of the hall (we were rather poor at the time) and the concert was something to cherish for all our lives.
Oh, you are so lucky, Jorge, to have that marvelous opportunity. I am from Chile, and I never had the chance to see Arrau playing on live. I am absolutely agree with you about the talent of Claudio Arrau. He was awarded with the distinction to be the best Beethoven piano interpreter since the concerts began to be recorded. Chile has produced outstanding artists, specially musical interpreters.
Felicidades.
This is magnificent. But for sure not my single favorite. My favorites for Beethoven's 5th have always been Backhaus ans Gilels. But once started to understand and learn to appreciate the Arraus' magnificent artistry, I now rank him together with the other two as my favorite artists for this great concerto. Each is brilliant here in a different way. This concerto is way too great to be defined by only one great performance by one great artist.

What a dúo, Arrau & Haitnik plus the extraordinary Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Immense Claudio Arrau

What? No comments? This recording is a beauty. Sold probably 100s of thousands if not a million, which is huge for classical music.
Donn Rutkoff It is my favorite recording of this concerto.
Donn Rutkoff There is another uploading of this wonderful performance, and there I have written a long comment about my enthusiasm.
