I've been obsessed before I started watching even.
I started watching it because my crush loves it so much and I wanted to relate (wow that's such a shallow reason I'm sorry) but when I started watching it, I was unexpectedly so hooked that I watched season 1-11 in 3 weeks and now I honestly love the show waaaaaaaaaay more than I like him.
Cas died on a Thursday. pretty relatable. my twin got me into SPN and now I love the show far more than them.

I personally feel that they are more like brothers in a sense and that the "love" is simply a family like bond that's been created. I have nothing against gay people but I personally don't ship any of the boys with each other.
However, I know that the fandom is very split up when it comes to these types of things so I won't hate on you for your opinion if you don't hate on me for mine.

As Cas learns about humanity - mainly from the Winchesters - I believe he begins to idolize Dean as someone he would like to emulate and would like Dean's respect for his efforts too. Why Dean? Well Dean was the one chosen to represent the Angels side so he naturally places Dean on a higher pedestal than Demon Blood Sam.

Actually it's confirmed by the writers that it was in the script, Misha wasn't joking. Jensen didn't think that Dean would ever openly say I love you to anyone so they changed it to either "I need you" or "we are family" I can't remember which.
It was in the scene where cas was being controlled by one of the top angels and they were trying to make cas take away the tablet with the word of God on it and cas was beating dean to death and dean said something along the lines of "cas, please, I need you, we are family." To snap cas out of it. In the script it original had him saying I love you but Jensen changed it at the right moment because he thought that it was or of character for dean but I think it was just because Jensen was uncomfortable saying it to a man.
