Do it using biscuit joints. They are fantastic for alignment and also strong. There is also metal biscuit connectors as well which means you can glue the edge and then click the biscuits together that acts like a clamp without actually using clamps. Knapp makes biscuits that can do this. lamello does as well but their biscuit jointers are very expensive (but are amazing).

Have you ever considered using pocket holes ? After watching some UA-cam videos where they have been used, I took the plunge and bought one. It's been really useful and you can make a nice feature of the plugs that cover the screws by using different types of wood as a contrast. I have even put holes in where there were no pocket screws needed in a row of three, and used a plug of the same wood that I had soaked in a coloured wood dye as a feature in the middle of a small video unit I made for my niece and she was over the moon with it. The price has come down considerably over the last couple of years and you can now pick a single hole unit up from Amazon for as little as £3.99, inc. free postage (it takes about 2 weeks to get stuff from China these days as the Chinese postal system has begun daily international mail flights now to the UK, because us Brits are buying that much stuff from there). It is better if it's a double hole system as you usually need double screws for any joint.

I know you probably don't have one but using a 1/2 router to cut your dados is a lot quicker and leaves a nice consistent finish. Trend sell router cutters that are the same diameter as ply/mdf. Great vid 👍
Excellent build! One comment on the design: the storage is on the bottom shelf, unlike your previous build where the storage was open at the top. If the client has 30 albums from back to front, would they have to remove a chunk, about 10-2 albums in order to access the albums in the rear of the cabinet?
Preferences are interesting and funny. I don't like the look of dowels at all, haha. Guess it's just not common here. Next time I would wait with the middle boards for later. No need to do glue everything at ones. Anyway, wonderful project as usual, nice build!
Great video, superb build, but putting your deck on top of your speakers is a recipe for disaster unless he likes very quiet music. He will need to move either the deck or the speakers otherwise you will get terrible vibrations through the stylus. Personally I would put the speakers on the wall either side of the room to make the best of the stereo separation. Keep up the good work.
Is finding/getting the records out a bit awkward with it being on the bottom and face forward? Maybe that's the place to put just the bunch you're currently into while you keep your main storage somewhere else. Instead of lying all over the floor where my current favs live ... Does look nice.
I really dislike the look of construction plywood, especially when finished in a dark color with that kind of early/late contrast, but this is a nice project.
@@bighands69 If you like the look of stained softwood plywood, yes. But I know what it looks like in-person, as I do a lot of woodworking. This is no slight against the project -- I just don't like that kind of finish on that kind of wood.

I have been looking at decent quality poplar ply that is accessible and substantially cheaper than Baltic birch, but no luck. I get sheet goods either from my local reclamation yard (as they stock new sheets sometimes) or my local timber merchants. The timber merchants is much better quality stuff but slightly more expensive

No complaints about the quality of the wood work here, but that setup will not sound very good.There's no stereo separation and having speakers in the cabinet like that will transfer vibration to the turntable, further decreasing sound quality. As much as possible, you want your listening position and your speakers to form an equilateral triangle. If that is all the space your friend has available, then he would get a much better experience using a headphone focused setup. Just my two cents.
Thank you!! As an audiophile myself, I wondered what the clients focus and goal was with the speaker arrangement. Jukebox style perhaps? The build is elegent and inexpensive but as you thought, either a good thing slab of concrete or even granite would have helped dampen vibration on the turntable it was mounted on. Since the floors are wood, dampening becomes more essential due to vibration transfer from the wood. Good catch though! And despite the consideration a beautiful and functional cabinet!!

really nice turntable, completely wasted tho because of all the vibrations from the speakers feeding back into the cartridge, when you place your turntable on the same furniture as your speakers
The volume would need to be extremely high for it to actually affected the arm and then the cartridge and needed. It would need have extreme vibration.
@@bighands69 This turntable uses an carbon tonearm because it's stiffer than an aluminium one and has less ressonance, at that exetremely high level of vibration avoidance the speaker placement most definitetly is the biggest limiting factor in this setup. But I wouldn't phrase this nearly as salty nowadays, 2 years later, it's a genuinely impressive setup, even though you could improve the sound for no cost, or get a similar sound for a bit less money.

Challenge with a router is keeping the cut level of both sides. You can create a router jig to do that but you will need to build it.

The finish reminded me of the Japanese technique of burning the wood with a flame (forgotten the name of the technique).

Could you use a random orbit sander without sandpaper, but cotton cloth to buff?

Good job, but a bit "plain" in my opinion. In my opinion if I ever do furnitures by myself I would make them a bit less "commons".
