Building a Ring Around Gilly (and Other Moons!) - KSP

- At the end of my last video, I alluded to putting a ring around Gilly. Well, after a lengthy hiatus, I have returned to the project and succeeded. Sort of. Enjoy!
This video is effectively the third part of a loose trilogy of ring-related fun.

i like how KSP youtube has gone from sending small crafts to the far reaches of the kerbol system to bending the laws of physics at will
I mean, some of those small craft do actually bend the laws of physics. Stratzenblitz75's 1.5 ton (I think) SSTO to Eve (I think) uses _significant_ clipping and sheer aerodynamic magic to work.
One of my favorites has returned. Happy to see you back Hazard-ish, sweeping the rug under KSP's physics engine like there's no tomorrow.

Its pretty cool that eventhough you've completely broken the part, and the physics of the game. It still registers it as proper geometry and casts a shadow on the surface. Would be even cooler if it retained collision.
I mean, of course it does. Physics and the part itself having weird stats have almost nothing to do with the mesh that is displayed and the light calculations from said mesh.

@@distraughtcat long story short hazard made a plane that fucked with physics thanks to a bug that got patched out. People wanted to see it do some shenanigans that it couldn't do anymore so hazard edited the game to make it work again iirc

Actually, it wasnt the Kraken it was the fact that gravity under the surface actually increases the further you go underground, eventually you get to the center which is a literal singularity, and some crazy crap happens at the singularity, allowing for you to get shot out of the object at ridiculous speeds, this can be seen in Stratzenblitz75's most recent video.
Knowing how big are the interstellar parts in ksp 2, this kind of things will probably be possible to make without the kraken consuming everything

I have a feeling one of the first things on the list of tools needed for the larger craft in ksp 2 is part welding to simplify the craft and keep the kraken away

Sick video, but why would you use the biggest part instead of the longest (one of the SRB’s) to avoid the gaps? Thanks!
Good question -- you're right that some of the SRBs are a bit longer, but then the ring would have been even thinner and nearly impossible to see.
Is it possible that you could achieve a gap-less ring by using something other than fuel tanks? I believe a Stratzenblitz video once showed that fuel crossfeed causes a large percentage of lag on KSP craft, so maybe it would be possible to do a true 5880 symmetry ring by either turning off fuel crossfeed of by using something like a crew module?
Fuel crossfeed is only calculated when you have engines running.
He liked Gilly so much he put a ring on it.
The real question is, would this be possible with stock?

Great video! It got me thinking, would it be possible to build a Dyson sphere with one or two comically large fairings and encapsulate a planet or star with it?
It would! I was tempted to try it for the video and may attempt to in the future, but it wouldn't look as good as a ring around a moon because it wouldn't be visible. There's no way that I'm building one around Kerbol though hahaha
I love how after putting a ring around a planet, it starts spacing out as if the third impact is starting from evangalion

For a Halo RIng, you would have to make a ring 10 000 km wide.
And damn is that a lot.
Not as big as the original Ringworld from the book 'Ringworld' where the radius was 1 astronomical unit
@@MDE_never_dies Actually, Mendicant Bias flew with the 30 000 km ring through a gas giant to avoid being hit by a planet.

Although 10 000 km is still really impresive.

Perhaps you can make a ring thats so big it would make the sun stop lighting the planets, thus making them an eternal night?
Now to do this without the cheat menu... maybe it could be done in KSP2?

Wow! This is amazing! I had no idea it was even possible for KSP to handle ANY object of that scale! Did you need to do anything to get the whole ring to be visible? Or does KSP just have a latent ability to casually render and light player placed objects larger than planets?!
KSP is ableto show the whole ring without changing anything! But parts of the ring stop being rendered if I zoom out any further than in the final shot of the video. So a rinf around Kerbin wouldn't actually be visible even if I made it. That's also why the Mun is the largest object I went to. I was quite surprised that it's able to cope with a single Mun-sized object at all though!
just got the game for free now i downloaded literally and cannot stress enough, literally installed 69 mods and starting a colonization campaign

Best thing about fairing is that you can change the shell to whatever size you want in the craft file and you can share to anyone and it would work fine
