Having just spent the last 2 months working on our boat with basically no budget I can certainly appreciate all the work ahead of you but it feels so good once it is finished. Thanks for the motivation and the positive way you approach things.
On the gooseneck you do not want any space there should be a delrin washer above and below , having no space makes it 10x stronger and not allow the pin to bend as you have the support off bottom and top of gooseneck and the pin . The delrin over a stainless washer will stop the squeaking as the boom moves with a dab of teflon grease
Through you guys I find to enjoy these refitting because one can learn so much and they have been very inspiring and motivational. Thanks Ben & Ashley for sharing it with us.
Hey guys, that video was super cool! You are sailing on my dream boat but so many people told me that lagoon wasent made to sail around the world. So yeah, I feel for you. Repairs and upgrades, but the space and not always tilting sideways!💁♂️😉 keep getting those repairs videos coming! Enjoying them alot! Keep safe! ❤
Great to see you tackling the big jobs to keep Nahoa running like a Swiss watch but improving her usability to suit your needs. You are well placed in South Africa as it seems to have such a buoyant (excuse the pun) catamaran industry so all the trades and support you could ever need. Here’s to the next leg of our fascinating trail of photos. Looking forward to piggybacking the journey through your eyes. Keep well and safe.
Hey there me seafaring buddies. Very glad that Nahoa held strong for y’all to arrive in South Africa. I had read that you would find the trades there helpful. Hopefully all projects are completed in tip top time. Say that 3 times fast. I’m real interested in what your family time ventures into in between important boat work supervision. Keep things safe and satisfying. Culture us some more please. Kisses for all babies. Adults included. Hasta luego.
You four are indomitable! You will get through it! I think, in fairness you have to count "for the channel" like another whole person's worth of stuff - cables and drones and backups to backups... all part of your life. Thanks for sharing it all! I like the idea of small appliances AND a 60 foot boat!
Yes, boats are a lot of maintenance, but they sure can provide a wonderful life. Glad to see you've brought in someone to thoroughly inspect your home/boat. Happy Safe Sailing! Thanks for sharing!
Spray silicone is saltwater boating's BFF. It'll protect metal from corrosion and rubber from drying out, shrinking and splitting. My engines and fittings get covered in it every spring.
Opening with pics on phone was very good! Terrific, actually. You two are looking happy! Nahoa will soon be good looking and fun to be with - again. Best, Webhead USA
I would mount that Co2 detector, below the level of the bed, if it gets to mattress level it might be to late, Co2 is heavier than air so it will always fill from bottom up......
After all the thousands miles, you’ve put on that boat, it’s not in too bad of shape, but definitely must do maintenance jobs for the completion of your circumnavigation.
The one very complicated problem you mention is the diesel engine. Gasoline/diesel engines have 200-300 movable parts and fittings that can go bad, especially in seafaring conditions. For your next boat go totally electric using solar (and maybe wind). Mechanically, these are much simpler and most of the electric motors are sealed for lifetime use. You will not need to buy diesel, which is becoming more and more expensive, and have the issue of storing it. New electric systems even have regenerative propellers that actually generate electricity when you are under wind power. Love you show. The kids are going to be more and more an active part of it.
bread maker i had was half that size. but also i found making it by hand was better results. perhaps a stand mixer could replace it and be more multi funtional
If you can swing it, stop by Japan for small appliances. Space is limited in Japan, so appliances are miniaturized. Would be very cool if you sail north of SE asia sometime in your travels, visiting, Japan, Korea, etc.
Love the bit about the bread maker. Totally agree, why the heck are they so big. Don’t get an air fryer, they are big too! Keep up the refit and safe sailing!
8qt instapot duo crisp with air fryer lid.... It can replace your whole kitchen and make bread! 1 appliance does it all! Then maybe an additional water kettle for coffee, tea, soup, hot coco etc. Thats all you need.
Ben, thanks for making my wife', Linda's LIFE (not just day!) today when you came to her workplace to purchase high-pressure hoses. You and the family, and your weekly videos, add serious value to our lives. Keep up the good work and "may the wind be always at your back" up the west coast of South Africa and on to the Caribbean, and thereafter.
David, tell Linda she works at one of my favorite stores! No, thank you for watching. Never know who I’ll bump into some days. Great to chat with Linda. Will be back before we set sail! Have a few more hoses up for replacement on my list.
That was very well done. I would love it if you could do the same thing about the standing and running rigging. I would really enjoy your insight about managing your sail plan, how you trim sails, etc. 5-6 years ago, I was watching 10 sailing channels, I'm down to two now, you guys, and Uma. They (Uma) have finally come clean about the real condition of their boat. It's not all fun and games.oyt there. Thanks for sharing! May the Good Lord Bless You and Keep You safe all of your days.
Looking back Ben and i dont mean this as a negative but you have aged....im sure its a huge stress when you have kids and wife in the middle of the ocean with no backup if the SHTF just wjat is between your ears..... I would aged too.....and im 66 going on 85.....like i say its not the age for me its the mileage....ive been a roughneck on an offshore oil rig in late 70's in AK to selling servers for IBM in Toronto....i retired in 2006 right at 50 years old. I would be nervous on a small boat with my Maine Coon cats much less kids etc.....my hats off to you dude you got some guts and steel nerves....your wife does also.....
From someone who lives in a campervan I would say under no circumstances should you throw your spare cables away That’s dumb because you know you will need them eventually
How super exciting. This was a great lead into the phase of the adventure. Love your attitudes, motivation and enthusiasm. Seagull Striker? Ben is making up words because he knows we don't know any better. I went into the local marine store, West marine, and asked for a sea gull striker and he pointed toward a tennis racket, ,lol We forgot you took out that big couch and made the cushions. What a great job you did. Ben does make a good point about "paying your dues". It is true in everyone's life but in a house, you can neglect things longer, but, Father Time always wins. We are in full time in our RV and since spring is almost here in the Pacific North West, we will need to survey the trailer and do some maintenance, too. We love taking a break and catching up with you guys. Sunday mornings are the best! We are so very very excited for ya.
Your story is a story if perseverance, full if highs and lows and for sure, if you traced your roots you would find that you are descended from families that did the very same thing that you are doing now. Its in your genes. Not everyone in your family followed a lifecourse like yours, for what ever reason. Congratulations on your amazing adventure and on raising resilient children.
FYI: Re, making bread. You dont need a bread maker. 3 things you need that you already have, a large bowl for mixing and proofing, a surface for needing and an oven, also for proofing and will bake the bread too😘
Easy for me to just say but maybe it's time. Lagoon makes a great boat for cruising the lagoons of Tahiti but they just don't hold up to the constant pounding of crossing oceans.
I never see anyone talk about the Radar on the mast, are they not running 24/7 while at sea? What wears out, what maintenance is done how long do they last?
no matter how long something you kept because you might need it one day has been sitting unused and just taking up space: once you throw it out, you would have needed it within a couple of days or weeks.
Omg!!!! We're watching tonight and right before you mention the electronics, junk...I say to my husband (and we have downsized from a home to a tiny apartment), "hmmmm, Ben sounds like you. You have all those tubs of cables (cat5) what are you ever going to do with tgem?" When next comes on the screen CABLES 😂😂😅
Greetings from Arizona, USA. I have been watching you guys for years now and I want to suggest something . I love music and have recently discovered a new artist that I want to share with you. Ren - Hi Ren. This song is powerful and deep. I hope that you love it as much as I do. Best wishes and positive vibes to you all.
Hi, i just got worried when i heard that a portable small glass hammer will be put right beside the glsss escape hatch. Please be very careful when young kids are around. No offencement, just saying. Please stay safe always. Always praying for your safe travels. God bless.
Ok so it’s going to be a 60’ boat next? Wow sounds great. I saw the cables and laughed, I keep so many as well!! Probably 1/3 are questionable quality!! Nice video guys!
Hi Noaha. Really enjoyed that video. You guys are doing a great job. However, the comment about your photo gallery and all the mundane pictures that tell the real story hit home not only as a sailor, but in life in general. So many times I’ve gone to the store and taken a picture of a product and sent it home to my wife saying “ is this right one”. And that is life.
So is it the timing or what about refit in a boat? I just finished watching Jordan and Desiree and project Atticus and of course Jordan was busy as a bee with the help of his dad while they are in Malta, working on a lot of projects, so it seems like it’s unending. But you all do great videos!!👏👏👏 Happy Sails once you start sailing again.
Hay you take a family of four tree quarters of the way around the world and it would start to show on you too lol. She's a good old girl but she is showing her age, enjoy the shore leave.
enjoy the channel with great respect, I had dreams my self to sail around with sail but only managed by commercial ships under power.. By sail only managed small portions. Succes in your overhaul which could and would be expected after so many miles. Looking forward to your following voyages with your spouse and children. J.Jonkers
It amazes what some boats carry. I don’t own a bread machine or an ice maker in a house… I can still make bread and ice. I only ever use machines i can’t replicate if you see what I mean.
If you have an air fryer already and are prepared to hand prepare the dough then that will save an appliance. My air fryer can bake a loaf in 40 mins and it'll use not much more power than the bread maker
Since having your children. You two have grown into the best Sailing channel. Thanks for the content!
Like you said major maintenance is just part of the job. Looking forward to seeing the transformation and sailing again.
Having just spent the last 2 months working on our boat with basically no budget I can certainly appreciate all the work ahead of you but it feels so good once it is finished. Thanks for the motivation and the positive way you approach things.
Just like any home, gotta fix what breaks and remodel every now and then.. Good to see you guys doing well.
Hang in there. You all are doing a great job as sailors and parents. Enjoying the channel. Tks for sharing.
On the gooseneck you do not want any space there should be a delrin washer above and below , having no space makes it 10x stronger and not allow the pin to bend as you have the support off bottom and top of gooseneck and the pin . Looking forward to seeing you in Grenada!
When?

Fantastic family, so knowledgeable and lovely. Thank you so much!
Bread maker? You can bake bread in a Dutch oven on your stovetop, whether gas or induction. Dutch oven stows away with pots and pans when not in use.
Yes, boats are a lot of maintenance, but they sure can provide a wonderful life. Glad to see you've brought in someone to thoroughly inspect your home/boat. Happy Safe Sailing! Thanks for sharing!

your travel videos are awesome, but for some reason I always look forward to the repair and refit videos the most, always very interesting!
After all the thousands miles, you’ve put on that boat, it’s not in too bad of shape, but definitely must do maintenance jobs for the completion of your circumnavigation.
Excited for everything. You are an amazing family ! Thanks again for sharing your lives with us grateful for the lesson's and wisdom shared ✌🏼💗😊⛵

After revealing the refit…can’t wait till you share your plans on where Nahoa will sail to next!
Tony & Susan here, You have put a few miles on this boat. These items are to be expected but not relished , ha. Get after it my friends. Cheers!
bread maker i had was half that size. but also i found making it by hand was better results. perhaps a stand mixer could replace it and be more multi funtional
Lotsa projects! I hate you spending the money, but I like seeing these things get fixed and how they are attacked.
You say "You can't wait".
Well, neither can we 😉
Looking forward to the project work.
Good luck.

Great video as always. Just a safety comment: You should mount the CO detectors near the floor as CO is heavier than air. Just saying.

@@SailingNahoa Thanks Ben. Will do.
I always know when y’all have uploaded a video when you’ve liked your Facebook comments!! Yay!
I have a cable fetish, can sort a bag of entangled cables in no time. Would love to be able to help.
Just saw your vid
Use black 3m weatherstrip cement.
Glue ends together .
Becareful
Does not come off skin!
Guess a factory new cross beam is out of the question? Welding aluminum tends to stress the metal around the weld,
Good luck guys. U got your hands busy with projects.
That was very well done. I would love it if you could do the same thing about the standing and running rigging. I would really enjoy your insight about managing your sail plan, how you trim sails, etc.

I'm just wondering at what point is it more cost effective
To just start looking for a new boat.
From someone who lives in a campervan I would say under no circumstances should you throw your spare cables away That’s dumb because you know you will need them eventually

West Marine staff don’t know what they are talking about. Maybe they know about the dolphin striker!
Thanks for all of your videos, you guys are a real pleasure to get to know! Thanks for years of knowledge, experience and friendship ❤

I'm so glad you are able to get all the repairs done and get Nahoa a looking pretty too! See ya'll next time!
You guys have such a positive attitude even though Im sure things are piling up on you as you undergo this refit.
Good on you guys. You're doing great. Always love your calm approach. Keep safe and enjoy South Africa.
Mental health. Ashley have a personality made in stone. Always enjoying her self and just smile to what is coming.
What do you call a garage sale on a boat, aft, transom, cockpit sale?…🤔 cheers guys! Enjoy your episodes!
Excited for the refit for you both... Peace of mind is a wonderful thing
I put 1 big sink in my boat and I can't believe how much better it is for kitchen stuff.
FYI: Re, making bread. You dont need a bread maker. 3 things you need that you already have, a large bowl for mixing and proofing, a surface for needing and an oven, also for proofing and will bake the bread too😘

Those rigging issues were epic. Glad you had no CATO.
All the best with the boat repairs. Love your videos.
Circumnavigation is just sailing from one ocean / country to another to do boat work! Haha enjoy.
Photos of measuring tape against boat parts ... EPIC!
Hope you have time to visit the West Coast, Winelands and Hermanus. It should be more affordable to fix your Cat in Cape Town with the weaker Rand.🤗
12:03 did you super glue the gasket ends together and uv and weather shrunk it or did you just but them together when you installed them
I never see anyone talk about the Radar on the mast, are they not running 24/7 while at sea? What wears out, what maintenance is done how long do they last?
Good rigging inspection. Stat safe.
no matter how long something you kept because you might need it one day has been sitting unused and just taking up space: once you throw it out, you would have needed it within a couple of days or weeks.

Sweet…thanks for sharing, your journey is interesting😊
Great episode! Looking forward to seeing Nohoa refurbished.
always something, just like any home.
Looks really nice, the parts we've seen!
Good to see you again.
From what I've seen - yer in the best place in the world for that. Good for ya, ay!
Wow, you never said how bad South Africa was. So I looked up what is happening over there. It's bad!
Greetings from Arizona, USA.
I have been watching you guys for years now and I want to suggest something .
I love music and have recently discovered a new artist that I want to share with you.

The bottle opener does not need replacing just sand it and clear spray it…🤣😂
Hello. Do you feel your safety nets around the boat are high enough for the kids?
The budget breakdown is going to be interesting. In the US I can't imagine this being less than 25k.
We have found many trades working for Robertson & Cain that are eager to take side jobs at super reasonable prices.
👏👏❤️
Since you guys are in Cape Town, you should go check out Balance catamarans awesome boats

Cool video ben. Love how you begin the video. Good stuff. Love u guys❤.

Not going anywhere still watching videos, hope repairs are not going to cost to much.
Yall Rock ,, the end !
I'm not a baker but I found a way to make no knead bread in a enameled cast iron pot in the oven. Might work for you.
OM Gosh...Willa is getting so tall!! ❤
First thing that comes into my mind - not EVERY photo is a 'Favourite' ;-)
Hello from Siesta Key Florida
Thanks!
enjoy the channel with great respect, I had dreams my self to sail around with sail but only managed by commercial ships under power.. By sail only managed small portions.

Space saver tip...give the bread maker away and bake your bread in the oven after mixing by hand... just a thought. Stay Safe
Hello from S.A. Cape Town is very special.
We always need a cable … and that dongle 😂
Never ask that question!
If you have an air fryer already and are prepared to hand prepare the dough then that will save an appliance. My air fryer can bake a loaf in 40 mins and it'll use not much more power than the bread maker
