  • (21 Sep 2019) A glittering crowd gathered under the stars in the White House Rose Garden on Friday, as President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania hosted Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his wife, Jenny, for an open-air state dinner.
Guests, including members of Congress, White House staff and an Australian delegation that included pro golfer Greg Norman, were seated at a mix of round and rectangular tables draped in yellow and green tablecloths in tribute to Australia's national colours.
Below an illuminated White House, Melania - who had organised the event - thanked all involved for "an incredible job" before introducing a special military band performance of the famous Australian song 'Waltzing Matilda.'

That was great, I would like to have heard the whole thing.
There is a US Marine unit that has Waltzing Matilda as their official unit song. They were posted in Australia during WW2.

There's a kind of songs that are meant for stately, diplomatic events. This is one of them.

Thank you to all the US men who served in the Pacific. We were doing it on our own, and then the Yanks showed up.

Waltzing Matilda is essentially our 2nd national anthem. It represents the less British side of Australia, so we’re obviously pretty stoked about it.

It's Australians national anthem. Watch the footy and the players will lip sing the official national anthem, then when Waltzing Matilda is sung, they all sing properly and with enthusiasm.

The anthem doesn’t really mean much
It was chosen when the nation was federated
Waltzing Matilda was made way before federation and is older than the anthem

The aus anthem actually comes from a really long poem

      @@phoenixparrot9351 I know that
But the poem that would become the anthem is older than federation
It was made in the 1800s

I mean, if it's any consolation, that event was more about honoring our cousins down under than feting Morrison. And as bad as you might think your PM is, he doesn't hold a candle to the fucking demagogue we're currently dealing with.

Two things. #1 This is easily the worst version of this song ever sung. And it's almost impossible to fuck up. #2 Trump is literally The Squatter. Talk about tone deaf.
