    Guys, based on the comments, it seems I need to make a little clarification. I did NOT buy this BRAT. I was on the fence about it after I went to see it. (Price/Rust) The next day at noon, not even 24hrs laters, I looked and the ad was deleted from FB Marketplace. I didn’t reach back out to the seller. So, I don’t know if he changed his mind about selling it, or it he sold it shortly after I left that afternoon. I am still on the hunt still for a BRAT.

      I know this is unrelated, but I need your help. I have an 02 Outback LLB, and I got stuck in the snow today. What followed was a flashing AT light, and a p0748 code. It was a bit high centered on the snow. Is this an electrical issue? I'm perplexed. PLEASE! Thanks.

      Good luck with that. Brats rusted to powder even in the less humid climate here, as did most Subarus of that era. A rust free one brings absolutely stupid money. several times what they sold for new like an original Toyota FJ or the 1966-76 Ford "box" Bronco.
      If I ever found one, Im sure I could sell it up in the Peoples Republik of Boulder (CO) within minutes of listing it for full asking price on Craigslist.

    These brats are so cool! My bud had one in HS back in the mid 2000s and we drove it to all the skate parks in the US NW with our bmx bikes loaded in the back! Such good little cars!

    First car I learned a manual trans in was a junkyard Subaru Brat. The thing was beat to hell, no doors on it, but yet the door chime still worked. Always loved these things, but living in Jersey either they have returned to Mother Earth or a Coke can.

    My uncle has a 1982 or 83 BRAT, He lives in Logan WV. Its still in good condition, I remember riding in the back a few times. He let me drive it to my high school prom, It sits in his garage since he is to old to drive now. I want it, I hope to own it someday.

    Plenty left In Australia 🇦🇺. As they where still built and sold until about 1994. Plenty of them used on farms around the country. So didn’t rust. Still see them around regularly especially in county towns.

    Brat is one of my favorite Subarus. Definitely worth restoring and driving. There are a couple nice lifted Brats up here in the Northwest but they are extremely rare now. Way cooler than the Baja but very lacking in performance. Not sure if it’s possible to put a turbo EJ engine in there, might be a fun project.

    • @mitchkelleher7972
      @mitchkelleher7972 2 роки тому +1

      I've seen videos with them. Not sure if they had to clearance the frame rails with a hammer or not-there's a decent amount of space in the engine compartment, but I'm not sure if it's enough for going from OHV to OHC. A SOHC EJ22 would double the power, get good mileage, be easy to get at the plugs, and be bulletproof. I had an '84 wagon and '83 sedan and used to want to find an '83/4 hardtop to put an EJ22 in plus maybe convert to RWD, but I could never find one in good shape. Sure a turbo would be fast, but even with about 140 hp with the decent low end of an EJ22, it would be entertaining in something so light. These were designed for 65-95 hp (the latter with a turbo), so to try to get the chassis up to the point of dealing with the power of an EJ turbo would be a lot more time and money that could go into something better in the first place.

      You can swap out the old ea81 with an ej motor using an adapter plate. But if you want to improve the performance of the ea81... get a better exhaust, use ea82 intake manifolds with the larger intake pattern of 80x43mm, weber carby and a 5 speed box if you also want to keep the fuel economy to 6L/100km or 39mpg.

    My birth year is 87 too lol. Anyway my first car was a 1984 white subaru le brat it had the awd step to help you in the bed. T-top, and roll cage on the back with fog lights but it had the seats in the bed taken out. At first I was embossed to drive it. But it was fun to drive and all my friends loved it. So eventually I came around and loved the car. Wish I Still had it.

    This brings me back. My first 4 cars were Subarus, an 81 GL wagon i got when i graduated from high school in 89, it was a rusty bucket even then. I kept it a year and got a 83 GL wagon that was much nicer (power windows and velour seats not the vinal and plaid). Totaled it and got an 82 wagon, it had the center light, it worked kind of the opposite as fog lights, when on it came on with the high beams. had that car when i joined the Air Force in 91. I went to Jones Chevorlet in Sumter SC to get brake adjusters for the rear, they still had a Subaru sign up but had stopped selling subarus because they didn't want to compete with the Geo line chevy was selling a the time. so this was early 92, went back to pick up my parts and they had an 89 XT and i took it home, left the brake parts in the back seat. Kept that car a couple years, loved loved loved it (front wheel drive only), but traded it for a family car when my daughter came along. Seeing the new 2022 BRZ, i want one bad, I'm going to wait till my truck is paid off but i'm getting that BRZ.

    I worked Subaru dealer 72-86. First BRAT was 78. My brother was first certified Subaru tech in state of Kentucky. We cut back seats out during PDI. Don’t think we ever sold any of them. I got to watch their evolution. Can tell you a ton of stuff about them. My first Subaru was 1973. Manual choke, trans, steering. Actually everything was. No automatic trans till 75 and it was terrible. Retired now after 45 years. Still enjoy all these car repair videos you all put out. Best wishes for the new year. Del

    Subaru had a dealer as of late 70's in North Chuck off Rivers Ave, right where I526 crosses now
    bought our Subies there. Had a 81 Brat, Black, shark nose, seats; would love to still have it and let you rebuild it
    I used to fly through Francis Marion in the Brat, surprising all the Broncos, Blazers in the woods
    Happy Hunting!

    Our (kids from the 80's/90's) only exposure to the Subaru Brat was the scaled-down electric ⚡ R/C car from the famous Japanese remote control manufacturer called Tamiya. Tamiya was a lot more famous for model boxed cars, hundreds of pieces to build and eventually paint.

  • @annyer262
    @annyer262 2 роки тому +1

    The were made in Japan until 1994. The were sold in the Australian market and other markets until about 1995. As as a result parts are still available from Australia. You can even get new tail gates after market. The Australian Market bull bar looks really great on these trucks (Utes). I have one on mine. They were called "the Brumby" in Australia.
    I own an 1983 Subaru brat, which I bought from California. I live in the North East, and use it as a three season daily driver. I get lots of questions about it. It has the Australian spec bull bar, tonneau cover, rear bumperettes. No rear seats. So it is a left hand drive Brumby! There is a right hand drive brat in Australia. You can see a video about it on youtube. It has the decals and the rear seats, and a motor out of a WRX in it!

    I wonder if any other car company in the 80s had a full size tire in the middle of the engine bay 😆

    I know you are an east coaster and it is probably to far for you? However, it appears there is ‘seemingly’ perfect example of what you desire in Clatskanie, OR near The WA/OR boarder. Description “Clean and straight with canopy runs great comes with new windshield extra wheels, tires and spare parts”. The pictures look nice for the age. The owner is asking $7500 OBO. Pretty steep! However, I don’t know that you can find one this nice anywhere else? Most are all gone, either rotten or just junk not worth the time. If you determine that you are interested and speak first to the owner? I would be willing to go take a hands-on look, photos and give you an honest opinion of the condition. Otherwise, good hunting.

    First thing cut that restrictive muffler out ASAP.. They are so restrictive you can literally feel a difference in drivability! like gain over 5hp! That doesn't sound like much but they only came with like 90hp!

    You mean you didn't grow up with radio jingles being beaten into your brain in the early 80s?
    "I'll be smiling at you in my new Subaru, I got a Swift Dart deal!"
    Swift Dart Subaru.....
    "I didn't want it to sit for a year..."
    Bruh... it's been sitting 21.... what's one more? Buy it a beer, take it to a strip club, and build that shop already ;)
