Historic footage of Tamaqua Pennsylvania from 1938
thanks to my dad Albert J. Becker ( born in Tamaqua in 1922 to John Caldwell Becker and Julia Anna Stahler) for making this available.... and big thanks to whoever recorded this in 1938.
This Becker family came from Ronshausen Germany in 1855.
Adam Becker and Anna Margaretha (Viebach) traveled with their son Christian Friedrich Wilhelm (Christ) Becker and other children from Ronshausen, Germany. Christ (was the brother of Henry Becker born in PA , an accomplished contractor in Tamaqua) went on to become a prominent wheelright in town as well as local public representative , and Pennsylvania State Representative (PA State Legislature) until his premature death ( from surgery) in 1917.

Awesome video. My Mom Betty Jean Neifert (Jones) was the young girl coming out of the hat shop with her Aunt Bessie who operated the store. I remember Mom telling us that she could have any hat she wanted in the shop but she didn’t like wearing hats. What a thrill to see Mom on this video.

that was extraordinary, most of those buildings and houses still look exactly alike today. I kept looking for my dad and grandfather in the scenes along broad street. Very nice and thank you for uploading this film.

My family is from tamaqua, and my grandmother, Ethel heisler, can be seen here working at the florist. I’ve seen many pictures of her younger days but never any video. Pretty cool to see her around the age of 20

Home cooking, staying active and the stores weren’t filled with junky crap food and no 24 hr greasy fast food tacos, burgers and fries to eat at 11 o’clock at night. Looks like a much more retrained and wholesome time that I think I would have preferred to live in.
